• <strong>Pollution</strong> - definition: “to defile the purity of something”:<br />
– addition of a substance to the environment that can cause<br />
injury to human health or damage to natural ecosystems,<br />
– change in any environmental constituent induced by<br />
human activity<br />
• Natural “pollution” -release of harmful substances by<br />
natural processes; e.g. volcanoes.<br />
• Most substances considered as pollutants are actually<br />
natural constituents of the environment, though human<br />
activities increase their level to that which may be<br />
harmful.<br />
• Some pollutants are entirely synthetic; e.g..<br />
chlorofluorocarbons, dioxins
