EFFECTS OF POLLUTION<br />
• For some substances there is a threshold level<br />
below which harmful effects are not apparent.<br />
• For some compounds (e.g. carcinogens such as<br />
benzene) there is no threshold and any<br />
concentration can be harmful<br />
• Classification of health effects:<br />
– Acute<br />
• Result from short-term exposure to high<br />
concentrations of pollutants (e.g. following spill of<br />
toxic chemical)<br />
– Chronic<br />
• Result from long-term exposure to lower, ambient<br />
levels of pollution
