BIOSPHERE

Vladimir Vernadsky (1863-1945)
• Consists of that part of the environment where life exists:
hydrosphere (oceans, lakes, rivers, etc.), lower part of the
atmosphere and upper layer of the lithosphere (soil).
• Vernadsky :
- was amongst the first scientists to recognise the
important role played by organisms in various
interactions in the biosphere.
- established the first “biogeochemical laboratory”
dedicated to the study of these interactions.
- published a book entitled “Biosphere” in 1926.
