PRIMARY AND SECONDARY POLLUTANTS • Primary pollutants – Emitted directly into the environment • e.g. CO, NO x and HC from motor vehicle exhaust • Secondary pollutants – Formed by reaction in the environment • E.g. O 3 and PAN formed in photochemical smog from reaction of above primary pollutants
EFFECTS OF POLLUTION • For some substances there is a threshold level below which harmful effects are not apparent. • For some compounds (e.g. carcinogens such as benzene) there is no threshold and any concentration can be harmful • Classification of health effects: – Acute • Result from short-term exposure to high concentrations of pollutants (e.g. following spill of toxic chemical) – Chronic • Result from long-term exposure to lower, ambient levels of pollution
