DR.PREMA DHANRAJ SUPERANNNUATES
Dr. Prema Dhanraj, Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery, retired
on 30th June, 2010. Dr. Prema joined CMC in 1980 as a House
Surgeon after
completing her
MBBS from
Hubli, Karnataka.
She obtained the
MS (General
Surgery) from
Vellore in 1986,
and M.Ch
(Plastic Surgery)
in 1988 from
CMC, Ludhiana.
Since 1989, she
has served CMC Vellore - a place where,45 years ago, in 1964,
she had come severely injured with burns.
Dr. Prema has contributed tremendously to the growth and
development of the Department of Plastic Surgery- she was
instrumental in setting up the specialised Burns ICU and HDU,
the foreign student exchange and training programme with Norway
and Ethiopia and was involved in initiating the M.Ch (Plastic
Surgery) programme. She has published numerous research
papers, three books on Plastic Surgery, is a member of many
academic, scientific and social organizations, and has won
prestigious awards and honours for her extraordinary and
courageous life.
It was this inspiring life that was recounted in The Ultimate
Lecture that Dr. Prema gave on the eve of her superannuation.
She was only eight years old, when her trial by fire began, both
literally and figuratively. She was brought to CMC Vellore, where
her mother promised God that if He would spare her child, she
would make her daughter a plastic surgeon in Vellore. The road
from that day was anything but easy. But standing by her side
was her family, who she credited for being her support and
strength. It was from her mother, Dr. Prema said, that she learnt
life’s many lessons of motivation and courage, of problems and
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who
curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for
those who spitefully use you and persecute you.
solutions, and above all to accept herself - scars and all. Acceptance from society did not come as easily, but in time Dr.
Prema learnt to face this in her own inimitable style.
Over the years, Dr. Prema has emerged as a role model for many, and has given back to society in diverse ways- the
Smile Train, Burns Awareness programmes, motivational talks to young people, training doctors from Africa, and in
setting up Agni Raksha. The latter is an organization for burn victims, based in Bangalore and has nearly 1000 registered
patients, who she helps and counsels. Dr. Prema thanked God, her family, and her mentor, Dr. LBM Joseph.
CMC salutes Dr. Prema’s indomitable spirit and wishes her all God’s blessings as she continues to live out her commitment.
