TERMS OF REFERENCE OF THE <strong>SABPP</strong> CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL<br />
DEVELOPMENT (CPD) COMMITTEE<br />
PREAMBLE<br />
The purpose of this document is to outline the governance principles, requirements and processes of<br />
the <strong>SABPP</strong> CPD Committee. The <strong>SABPP</strong> CPD Committee comprises senior HR practitioners working to<br />
focus members of the profession on the importance of lifelong learning in continuously developing<br />
the stature of the Human Resource profession in southern Africa.<br />
GOAL of CPD<br />
The <strong>SABPP</strong> Board encourages members to view CPD as a systematic, ongoing structured process of<br />
maintaining, developing and enhancing skills, knowledge and competence both professionally and<br />
personally in order to improve performance at work<br />
INTRODUCTION<br />
The field of HR has emerged into a fully‐fledged profession in the world’s leading nations, where<br />
robust CPD programmes are supported by HR professionals.<br />
<strong>SABPP</strong> is the official HR professional body in South Africa and mandated by SAQA as an ETQA to<br />
conduct quality assurance of HR education and development.<br />
The CPD Committee aims to provide support to individual practitioners seeking recognition for their<br />
ongoing professional development and to providers offering learning events for such development.<br />
SCOPE<br />
The <strong>SABPP</strong>’s CPD programme encompasses all registered HR practitioners to cultivate a life‐long<br />
learning culture that supports relevant and current HR practice in organisations.<br />
STATUS OF THE COMMITTEE<br />
The CPD Committee is an official sub‐<strong>committee</strong> of the <strong>SABPP</strong> Board.<br />
PRINCIPLES<br />
The following principles guide the actions of the CPD Committee:<br />

An understanding among practitioners of the importance of continued professional<br />
development is critical to the promotion of HR professionalism in South Africa.<br />
CPD seeks to encourage ongoing learning and skill development, in the interests of remaining<br />
relevant as a profession. While it does not exclude formal education, it also includes other<br />
learning processes including, for example, job‐based learning, skill development programmes,<br />

seminars, conventions and professional body functions, researching and writing journal and<br />
other articles, lecturing and speaking engagements, mentoring and being mentored.<br />
HR professional development must be based on actual practice in the real world of work.<br />
<strong>SABPP</strong> will guide professional development and recommend learning activities that support<br />
current HR priorities.<br />
COMPOSITION OF THE COMMITTEE<br />
The composition of the <strong>committee</strong> is as follows:<br />

The Learning and Quality Assurance Manager of the <strong>SABPP</strong><br />

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

The CPD <strong>committee</strong> provides oversight of the CPD strategy, systems, processes and controls of<br />
<strong>SABPP</strong>.<br />
The CPD <strong>committee</strong> ensures that the <strong>SABPP</strong> CPD strategy is integrated with the strategic and<br />
business processes of <strong>SABPP</strong>; and that CPD is seen to add value by enabling the improvement<br />
of the performance and sustainability of South African organisations.<br />
The CPD <strong>committee</strong> delivers, maintains and validates the CPD value proposition to HR<br />
professionals.<br />
The <strong>committee</strong> should ensure that there is an effective, user‐friendly and robust process in<br />
place to improve the member value proposition of <strong>SABPP</strong>.<br />
The <strong>committee</strong> should exercise care and skill to design and develop appropriate CPD<br />
strategies and systems and advise the CEO on the implementation and maintenance of<br />
sustainable CPD solutions to ensure the achievement of strategic objectives.<br />
