In addition, together with ASTD we visited one of our accredited training providers, the Maccauvlei Learning Academyin Vereeniging to present their staff and learners with the latest South African State of the Learning and DevelopmentReport. Leading consulting firm Ernest & Young also visited the <strong>SABPP</strong> office this month and we thank their seniormanagers for sharing their excitement about the work we are currently doing. In terms of our alliances, we arebuilding these relationships, in particular our most recent alliance, the Skills Confederation in which we partner withthe Association for Skills Development Facilitation of South Africa, as well as the Chartered Institute for theManagement of Assessment Practices. <strong>SABPP</strong> presented papers on learning innovation and best practices at the ASTDAnnual International Conference in the Drakensberg, and also exhibited at this prestigious event of our alliancepartner, ASTD Global Network South Africa. ISPI Southern African chapter also visited our office, and we will soonprovide the market with details about an exciting project around green HR.At a governance and oversight level, I am proud to announce the launch of the <strong>SABPP</strong> labour market committee. Thiscommittee will play a pivotal role in providing more balanced professional perspectives on the labour market, inparticular how it affects the HR profession. The first meeting went very well and our committee members are ready toposition HR as a critical stakeholder in the labour market. A special word of thanks also to our Higher EducationCommittee members for continuing their work in producing graduates for the HR profession.Lastly, but most importantly, the <strong>SABPP</strong> standards and metrics project has now completed phase one of the broadconsultation process, meeting with another group of HR directors. We thank all HR directors for their positive responseand contributions to this exciting national project. Once clear standards are in place, I am sure that we will be able toplay a meaningful role in raising HR professionalism in South Africa. I thank the <strong>SABPP</strong> board, staff, training providersand alliance partners for their support and commitment and contribution in driving the HR profession forward. Theinteraction we have with you as HR professionals, learners, providers and partners inspires the new <strong>SABPP</strong> team togreater heights.2


lllSTAKEHOLDER RELATIONSSTUDENT CHAPTER LAUNCH AT UCTThe HOD Stakeholder Relations Siya Mlonzi attended the first launch of <strong>SABPP</strong>’s student chapter atUCT on the 7 th <strong>March</strong> <strong>2012</strong>. Students from the university attended the launch with enthusiasm, alsoattending was the HOD Dr Suki Goodman. CEO of <strong>SABPP</strong> Marius Meyer addressed the students ofUCT informing them of the opportunity for students to register as a student member with <strong>SABPP</strong> inrecognition of their career pathing in the Human Resources field. Once a student registers with<strong>SABPP</strong> they will be recognised for professional registration once they have completed their studiesat the university. To register as a candidate in HR with <strong>SABPP</strong> will offer the student the benefits of<strong>SABPP</strong> membership and encourage the student to continue to follow their career in HR.UCT students attend <strong>SABPP</strong> Student Chapter Launch in Cape TownWESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL SUMMITThe Western Cape Summit held on the 8 th <strong>March</strong> in Stellenbosch proved to be a successful event for<strong>SABPP</strong>. The summit was well attended with recognised members showing an interest in the varioustopics and discussion forums that had taken place. The guest speakers had addressed their topicswith skill and knowledge and had informed <strong>SABPP</strong> members with the outputs they had intended toreceive. Chatting during the lunch break members mentioned their interest and enthusiasm that<strong>SABPP</strong> had come to the Cape and that they finally had the opportunity to meet the staff in person.Various books showing research within the HR Field were on sale at the <strong>SABPP</strong> exhibition stand, ifanyone would like to still order some books they are more than welcome to contact Siya. Thesebooks are also available on email at a minimal cost. The day ended with a cheese and wine toencourage some networking amongst the members and <strong>SABPP</strong> staff. All looked forward to meetingagain with <strong>SABPP</strong> to talk HR!3


LEARNING AND QUALITY ASSURANCEDEPARTMENTETQA ON THE MOVE<strong>SABPP</strong> Accredited Training ProvidersThe ETQA Department held various workshops to supportexisting training providers on <strong>SABPP</strong> ETQA processers. Theworkshops gave the providers an opportunity to sharetheir concerns allowing them to have a platform to have atwo way transparent communication with <strong>SABPP</strong>.Feedback from these forums showed that providers werehappy to work in partnership with <strong>SABPP</strong>; they found theworkshops to be insightful and had learnt more aboutnew developments in the ETQA field. RESEARCH DEPARTMENTNEWS FROM HRRI: RESEARCHAfter a quiet few weeks, while Penny Abbott was finding her feet,HRRI activities are taking off. Penny has finalised new Guidelines forthe range of HRRI publications, also the Author and Copyright policy.HRRI has an ambitious target to load a large number of researcharticles onto the new <strong>SABPP</strong> website which we hope to launch midyear,so any contributions from members will be appreciated –contact Penny on penny@sabpp.co.za. The <strong>2012</strong> ASTD Survey onTraining and Development will kick off when the questionnaire goesout shortly. The <strong>2012</strong> Womens Report, to be published for WomensDay in August, is currently being written by an eminent team ofresearchers. We will shortly be publishing a Best Practices inRemuneration Report.We have started putting together some case studies in important areas – the first one will be on implementationof HR standards in a mining services company. If you have an interesting case study to contribute, please contactPenny. You don’t have to do the writing if you don’t have time, we can interview you and write it up for you.HRRI has supported the new Labour Market Committee of the <strong>SABPP</strong>, which met for the first time on <strong>March</strong> 2nd.Five enthusiastic practitioners convened to discuss how <strong>SABPP</strong> could make its voice heard on national policymatters and what research areas would be of importance. An important Position Paper on ContingentWorkforces and Decent Work will be issued shortly. If you are interested to be involved in this committee, pleasecontact Penny.Our voice is already reaching a wider audience. On <strong>March</strong> 7th, while COSATU members were marching in thestreets of our cities, Penny was interviewed on CII Radio for the <strong>SABPP</strong> views on various labour broking issues.The interviewer thanked us at the end for a balanced and informative view on a very polarised issue.BUDGET SPEECH<strong>SABPP</strong> has analysed the <strong>2012</strong> National Budget presented in February by the Minister of Finance looking at itfrom an HR perspective. We would like to run a pilot with a fewmentees from one employer in the Western Cape (to be identified) and the pilot would involverecruiting and screening prospective mentors using materials supplied from the national office. Thecoordinator would then be required to work with the employer to match mentors and mentees andto ensure adequate support during a 6 month pilot. Februaryreached a record high of 90 applications. <strong>SABPP</strong> would like to thank the Registrations Committee fortheir dedication to meet every month in order to evaluate new applications, upgrades and appeals.Whilst the new applications are streaming in the Professional Services Department endeavours toimprove its service to <strong>SABPP</strong> members in terms of being thorough and efficient. <strong>SABPP</strong> database of member details<strong>SABPP</strong> needs to do a major clean-up of the data that we presently have on each individual member.An audit of our records shows large gaps, particularly in terms of email addresses, current employerand qualifications. We will therefore shortly send to each person a record of the currentinformation we have on you, and ask you to update this for us. This will enable us to targetproducts and services better and to communicate more effectively with you.Pilot Mentorship Programme<strong>SABPP</strong> will soon be entering into a pilot project with VIP Payroll to refine the mentorship processthat <strong>SABPP</strong> currently has. A selection of mentees will be taken from VIP’s Industrial Relationsinternship programme matched with a selection of <strong>SABPP</strong> mentors. We hope to learn from thisproject items like the training of the mentors, the development of the mentee and mentorrelationship, the successes of having a mentor and utilising the mentor selection criteria to assist inthe programme.
