The unit begins with a study of the whole Gospel of John. It points to its meaning. The next lesson is about Jesus’ talk with Nicodemus. It is followed by Jesus’ talk with the Samaritan woman. Jesus healed the lame man. Then, Jesus fed the 5,000. The last lesson deals with the raising of Lazarus. All these lessons show Jesus in places where the people were and with the people that He loves so much. This is the meaning of “public ministry.” It is telling the good news of God to all people. It is healing and helping those who need it the most. It is preaching and teaching. The first lesson also tells about John the Baptist who had a public ministry. His public ministry ended not long after Jesus’ public ministry began. He told others to follow Jesus. Let’s learn about the public ministry of Jesus. The Word was with God. The Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. He made all things… His Life was the Light for men.” (John 1:1-3a, 4b) Word List recognize: to see and know divine: God, very wonderful disciple: someone who follows and learns from another; here, a follower of Jesus John began his book by telling about John the Baptist. John the Baptist was a very important man. He was sent from God to tell what he knew about Jesus. He wanted people to believe in Jesus. The Bible verses call Jesus the Light. The Light came into the world as a little baby. The Jews were expecting a great King. They were expecting great things. Jesus was born in a little town. His earthly father was a carpenter. Jesus grew up as a small-town boy. It is no wonder that the Jews did not recognize Him. The Word, Life, and Light (John 1:1-9) Christianity began with the Jews. But very soon after Jesus‟ death Christianity spread. Many Greek people became Christians. The Greeks did not understand the Jewish way of thinking. This was a problem for the church. John began to think about the problem. He lived in a Greek city. He knew the people. He knew that Jewish ideas were hard for the Greeks to understand. What could he say to help the Greeks understand? From Eternity to Here He thought of a plan. Both the Jews and the Greeks knew about The Word. Both of them could easily understand this. Jesus is the Word, the Life and the Light. In this gospel we find a great picture of Jesus. He was a human being. But He was also divine. Jesus lived before time began. He was God and He was with God. Jesus was God before there was a world. Right at the beginning of his Gospel, John tells us that Jesus (God) always was. He tells us that God will always be.
