Our Confederate Dead<br />

'Though the scorner may sneer at and the willing defame them, Our hearts sweil with<br />

gladness whenever we name them.' IFollowed by a lengthy eulogy, including the<br />

iollowing specifics:l<br />

Rev C A McDaniel founder of Bowdon Collegiate lnstitution He was the first Colonel of<br />

the 41st Georgia Regiment and was mortally wounded at Perryville, Ky<br />

To him more than to any other man s Car.oll indebted for good name and fame. His<br />

remains are to be brought from Kentucky and will be reinterred ln Bowdon, July 1oth. Let<br />

all do honor to his memory<br />

Wm. EzraCurtis He succeeded CoL McDaniel in the command of the 41st. and was<br />

mortally wounded at Crow's Valley His grave is in <strong>Carroll</strong>ton in a sadly neglected<br />

condition. Will the gallant 41st and other iriends suffer it to continue so?<br />

<strong>Carroll</strong> sent 13 fully organized companies to the field numbering, with recruits, about<br />

2,000 men. Do not our dead deserve a monument? ln hono.ing them, we honor<br />

ourselves. Will not the ladies move in this matter?<br />

Prof. Atkins. who was attached to the circus which exhibited at Decatur, Alabama on<br />

lvonday, ascended with a holair balloon during the afternoon, when the balloon became<br />

detached from the windlass fix ng its altitude and ascended to the height of a half mile<br />

and then rapidly descended rnto the Tennessee River. Atkins was drowned, though every<br />

effort was made to save his life.<br />

Prof. John W. Thompson, an old teacher. died near Hawkinsville on the 20th ultimo.<br />

Tuesday in August next, the following property. to wit: One town lot whereon James<br />

Westbrooks now lives, to satisfy two fi fas issued from a Justice Court of the 714th<br />

District G.Ir. in favor of W. T. Summerlln vs. N Estis, property levied on asthe property<br />

of N Estis, and also some other fi fas I have in rny hands.<br />

Also one lot of land number 7. in the 4th district of said county, levied on as the property<br />

of Sarah H. L4eyres [slc], Executrix & c to satisfy one fi fa issued from the city cou( of<br />

Savannah, Ga., in favor of Julian Meyres vs. said Sarah H. lvleyres, Executdx & c.<br />
