ASP Welcome Program At ASP we understand what it is to be new… everyone here was once new! Every year we welcome more than a hundred new families to our school. We have developed a comprehensive Orientation and Welcome Program to help them find their footing, make new friends and feel right at home. Our program is designed to make your integration into the ASP and Paris communities as quick and smooth as possible. From the online resources, to the Middle School Buddy program, Community Connections Fair, Living Skills seminars and parent cocktail parties, our goal is to help. Upper School Placement Testing Tuesday, August 27 1:00 pm Room 464/468 In order to ensure that the Upper School students are properly placed in classes, students who have previously taken a French or Spanish course in the past three years will need to take an oral test. New students who have not already taken the online tests should also plan on taking the tests on this day. The students should not be overly anxious about these tests; they are given in order to help place students into the levels that are appropriately challenging. 7 Orientation Day Tuesday, August 27 8:00 am ASP Main Gym This special day is mandatory for all new families. Several current ASP parents will be on hand to welcome you and help you and your children discover what the year ahead at ASP holds. Starting with check-in, you will receive your Registration Packet and be able to complete any outstanding paperwork. The children will then be directed to their classrooms while parents will be invited to attend a special presentation for each division. Orientation Day is an exciting moment for the students to see the campus more fully, meet teachers and some of their new classmates. This is their first real introduction to the school! Parents will be able to collect their pre-prepared security ID badges, car stickers (if car details are known ahead of time) and the student cards which serve as bus, library and cafeteria cards. Orientation Day is also a good opportunity to be introduced to all the groups of the Parent Faculty Association and find out how you can get involved. At the end of a busy morning, all new families are invited to enjoy a relaxing moment at our BBQ lunch on the cafeteria terrace. Upper School Community Picnic Saturday, September 7 5:00 – 9:00 pm Cafeteria Terrace All our Upper School families are invited to hang out, listen to music from our students and faculty, play sports and enjoy a casual meal. The picnic is a chance for the teenagers to get to know one another and the parents to relax in the sun and get to know faculty and other ASP families. Community Connections Fair Monday, September 9 9:00 – 11:00 am ASP Main Gym This is a great venue to discover the many English-speaking resources and services available in and around Paris. There will be more than 50 groups and organizations set up in the ASP Gym for you to visit. Groups attending the fair include local language schools, area clubs, cooking schools, religious and service institutions, bookshops, health and beauty services, IT support, banking and much more. Certain vendors will have items for sale on this day. In addition, PFA representatives will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions that you may have. Living Skills Seminars This one-of-a-kind, valuable service is provided by your PFA. At these informative sessions, you will get tips and useful information related to living in France. (All sessions take place in the PAC) Thursday, September 12 (9:00 am – 12:30 pm) “Food & Shopping” A culinary expert will provide information on what to buy and what to look out for when shopping at the local market, as well as provide the French equivalents of your favorite foods. A valuable shopping guide will also be provided. Tuesday, September 17 (9:00 am – 12:30 pm) “French Healthcare” Learn what to do in a medical emergency and how the French system works. A doctor working in Paris will explain the French approach to healthcare, how to find English-speaking doctors, and other essential information. Our ASP school nurse will share the school’s medical policy and will be available to answer questions.
Thursday, September 19 (9:00 am – 12:30 pm) “Eating Out & Getting Around in Paris” Seasoned ASP parents will offer tips on day-to-day travel in and about the city, including all forms of public transportation and driving in France. Learn some French etiquette tips from members of the ASP community. Also, get the inside scoop on the best and hottest restaurants in town, from corner bistros to Michelin-starred dining. Thursday, September 19 (12:30 pm – 2:00 pm) “Lunch With New Friends” After the final session there will be a special lunch for all participants to become better acquainted with your new friends, meet parents from your own neighborhood and exchange stories and ideas. (Location: Lower School Foyer) GYM All families CHECK IN here first CAFETERIA TERRACE COMMUNITY STORE BUILDING 6 GARCHES GATE founded 1946 Campus Map PFA Welcome Meeting Monday, September 23 9:00 am – 10:30 am Lower School Cafeteria EXIT GATE A vibrant component of the ASP experience is the parent community. The PFA offers ASP parents many opportunities to be engaged in school life and contribute to the ASP community. At the welcome meeting, PFA representatives will give brief presentations about school events and functions organized or supported by parent volunteers. The program includes an optional tour of campus. The PFA Welcome meeting is your chance to get involved, get to know fellow parents and help make a difference. Parent Welcome Cocktail Parties September – October 2013 Locations TBD As part of our longstanding Welcome Program, ASP is organizing grade-level cocktail parties for new and returning families. The cocktail events will be scheduled in September and October at the homes of ASP families and will allow parents to connect to other parents in their child’s grade. Parents can attend one or more of the cocktails as their schedules permit.
