A New Spin on NLG Wheel
Removal/Installation Procedures
Cessna has developed improved removal/installation procedures for the nose landing gear wheel (NLG) in Revision
31 of the Model 560XL Maintenance Manual. The revision is expected to be released in a few weeks.
Operators are provided new instructions to clean, inspect and disposition the serviceability of components that are
accessible during a NLG wheel and tire removal.
Operators should be aware that the maintenance manual revision also has changed the NLG wheel and tire installation
procedures. Special attention to recommended lubrication requirements, updated torque values utilized, and
installation of a new axle bolt is required with the new procedures.
Tailor Your Flight Manual with
Configuration Codes
Some pages in your Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) may not be applicable to your aircraft. When Cessna issues
revisions and temporary changes to the AFM, it may become unwieldy if pages are added that are not applicable
to the airplane serial effectivity or configuration. Each of the pages in the AFM has a configuration code printed
at the bottom center of the page with two letters such as “AB.” These codes and their definitions correspond to
the aircraft serial range and/or configuration listed in Section I of the AFM.
For some operators the process of identifying which configuration codes are applicable to their aircraft can appear
to be challenging. To help operators with this issue, Cessna Publications began providing Microsoft Excel
spreadsheets of Configuration Code Calculators some time ago. An operator can simply enter their aircraft serial
number and view all service documents complying with the airplane, including options available.
A current report from CAMP will list the service documents options and current avionics to properly configure
the AFM. The operator can then determine which codes apply to the aircraft; adding applicable AFM pages, and
removing irrelevant ones as the final process.
Note: It is important not to discard the removed pages as they may be later required if a service document is
complied with.
The AFM Configuration Code Calculators are available on CessnaSupport.com. Operators must first log into the
Customer Access page followed by selecting the Technical Publications tab at the top of the screen. The AFM
Configuration Code Calculator link can then be selected afterwards.
Cessna recently released calculators for the following manuals:
525CFM Rev 03
525FMB (CJ1+) Rev 2
55FMA (Citation II 0550 thru 0626) Rev 02
65C6FM (Citation VI) Rev 04
680FM Rev 10
These spreadsheets are an addition to the calculators already posted on our website. We will continue to develop
new calculators until all models are covered, and revise the existing postings as new revisions to the AFMs are
released.
CJ3 operators performing cabin pressurization tests have a new tool available to simplify aircraft
pressurization procedures during ground maintenance or tests. The Ground Pressurization Harness P/N
6388016-1 can be installed between the pressurization controller and the existing aircraft wiring. With the
harness installed, the DIVE and CLIMB signals from the controller and primary outflow valve are reversed—
making it possible to command the outflow valves to close by using the cabin dump switch.
Note: Instructions for using the Ground Pressurization Harness exist in the Chapter 21, Pressurization Control-
Adjustment/Test procedures of the Model 525B Maintenance Manual.
The new wire harness can be manufactured locally however, when Revision 14 of the maintenance manual
was released, the fabrication instructions for the harness were not included. A change request has been
submitted and the harness fabrication procedures are currently in development.
Until the next maintenance manual revision is released, operators who wish to have the new harness have
two options:
• Team CJ can be contacted for information to create the harness
• The order desk at Cessna Service Parts and Programs (CSP&P) can be contacted to purchase the
Switch Off Rosen Monitors
before Plugging In
Operators of Citations equipped with older Rosen P/N 5601-111 Side ledge Monitors should be aware the
ON/OFF switch of the monitors should be in the OFF position before plugging into the side ledge monitor
receptacle(s).
Failure to place the monitor switch in the OFF position can cause an unwanted voltage spike, potentially
damaging other components within the electrical circuit.
Citation 500-Series Brakes Explained
Since the initial production of the Citation 500-series family of airplanes, the braking systems have changed
from model to model. For the benefit of Citation operators, the information provided below describes some of the
operational differences for maintenance and flight crew “feel” of the braking systems.
Models 500/501 (Citation I), 525 (CitationJet, CJ1 and CJ1+), 550/551 (Citation II and Citation II Classic), S550
(Citation SII), and 560 (Citation V and Ultra)
• Pilot builds pressure to the antiskid servo valve by pressing the brake pedals and activating the hydraulic
master cylinders
• The antiskid servo valve has two shuttle valves that allow hydraulic fluid to bypass through the servo valve
to the brakes without electrical power
• If there is no electrical power to the brake system, the hydraulic braking pressure can still be increased
by pumping the pedals
Models 550 (Bravo) and 560XL (Excel)
• Pilot builds pressure to the antiskid servo valve by pressing the brake pedals and activating the hydraulic
master cylinders
• The antiskid servo valve does not have shuttle valves and, as a result, there are two hydraulic circuits
separated by the antiskid servo valve
• Because the antiskid servo valve is electrically controlled there is no braking ability without electrical
power
Models 510 (Mustang), 525A (CJ2 and CJ2+), 525B (CJ3), 525C (CJ4), 560 (Encore and Encore+), and 560XL (XLS
and XLS+)
• The brake pedals are spring-loaded with constant “feel” of pressure, however movement of the pedals
does not build any hydraulic braking system pressure
• There are no master cylinders with the brake pedals and the brake metering/antiskid servo valve is con
nected by cables
• There is only one hydraulic circuit
• Because the brake metering/antiskid servo valve is electrically controlled there is no braking ability with
out electrical power
Caution: In the rare event of brake system failure, operators must immediately use the emergency braking system
to stop the airplane in all Citation models.
SAIB Covers Semi-Synthetic Jet
Fuel for Citations
The FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) NE-11-56 to inform operators that jet fuel
blended with synthetic components meeting ASTM International Standard D7566 is acceptable for use on aircraft
certified for operation with D1655 fuel identified as Jet A or Jet A-1
The SAIB says the FAA relies on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to develop fuel specifications
that applicants can designate as operating limitations for approved products.
The FAA document recommends that the operating limitations in Aircraft Flight Manuals, Pilot Operating Instructions,
or Type Certificate Data Sheets that specify ASTM D1655 Jet A or Jet A-1 fuel are acceptable for use with
these fuels.
All Citation aircraft have been approved for use of Jet A and/or Jet A-1 and therefore operators can use semi-synthetic
jet fuels. Operators can refer to the existing FUEL LIMITS or FUEL LIMITATIONS of the OPERATING LIMITA-
TIONS procedures in Section II of the applicable AFM.
ANSWERS
Question
Answer
On a Primus 1000 equipped Citation aircraft, the pilots or copilots air data information (airspeed,
altitude, vertical speed) are red X’d. The Air Data Computers were swapped but the condition remained
on the original side. What could be the cause?
One possible cause for this condition could be the PFD bezel controller on the side which is experiencing
the failure. If the tach-generator of the baro set knob fails, the air data computer has
no baro reference, and will red X the air data information on that PFD. Try swapping the bezel
controllers to see if the condition follows. Another possible cause could be that one of the “Unit
ID Straps” is not connected due to a broken wire or loose ground block connection. Refer to the
Aircraft Avionics Wiring Diagram to determine the pin outs for the Unit ID and SDI wires, and
verify they are properly grounded. The ADC’s use this strapping to tell them which side they are
on, and report their data to the Display System. Without it, the system sees the data from the unit
as invalid and will display the red X’s.
NBAA M&O Sessions
Although Cessna will not be presenting
M&O sessions at this year’s NBAA, we
will still have Customer Service personnel
available in Las Vegas to discuss any technical
or support issues.
Additionally, we will present webinars in
the last quarter of 2011 to keep operators
informed of current field programs. We
regret that Citation Customer Service will
not present M&O sessions at the upcoming
NBAA Annual Convention. However,
we feel that time and money required to
