Description
The course offers an overview of
major modern media
phenomena. It is organized
around several recurring media
debates, through which students
will be introduced to diverse
perspectives regarding the roles
and functions of media. Students
will examine various claims
about media influences, media
systems and the future of media,
and engage in relevant
debates. A few debate topics are:
What are the effects of media
violence on children? Is public
broadcasting still necessary in
the age of new media? Will there
be any future for newspapers in
the Internet era? Students will
trace the origins and
development of particular
viewpoints about certain media
issues, identify both strengths
and weaknesses in those
arguments, and formulate their
own positions.
