About Scholarships 

Welcome to MCC! 

As your community college, we are committed to putting academic excellence and success 

within your reach. Muskegon Community College (MCC) and the Foundation for Muskegon 

Community College work with generous friends, organizations, businesses, and academic 

departments to establish these scholarships to help you succeed in achieving your educational 

goals. Scholarships are designed to: 

• Recognize talent, leadership and academic excellence 

• Provide financial assistance; and 

• Encourage you to start or continue a college education, receive training to become more 

employable, or advance within a particular career. 

Our goal is to provide a clear process for the scholarship process. Please note the following 

when applying for MCC scholarships: 

1. Information in this scholarship guide is accurate as of publication date in October 2012. 

Please visit muskegoncc.edu/scholarhips to learn about new scholarships, updated criteria, 

and other changes before submitting your application. 

2. Admission to Muskegon Community College is required for scholarship consideration. 

The free application is available online at muskegoncc.edu –simply click on “Apply Now”, 

and you’re on your way! 

3. Your high school transcripts must be on file at Muskegon Community College. These 

transcripts must be provided to MCC directly by your high school. 

4. It is recommended that all students complete the Free Application for Federal Student 

Aid (FAFSA). Completion of this form is required for several scholarships. Complete 

the application online at www.fafsa.gov and be sure to enter the Muskegon Community 

College code, 002297. The results will automatically be sent to the Financial Aid 

Department at MCC. 

5. The application on page 2 is required for all MCC scholarships listed on pages 4 through 

6. In addition, several scholarship require additional materials; please review criteria 

carefully. Information about additional applications and other required materials is also 

available at muskegoncc.edu/scholarships.

Brenda Gardner|ADAC Scholarship 

In memory of Brenda Gardner, fondly 

remembered employee of ADAC Automotive 

Amount: $1,000 ($500 per semester) 

Application: General 

Requirements: 

• Muskegon County resident who has an 

interest in working in human resources 

• Enrolled in any business related program 

at Muskegon Community College 

(degree or certificate) that could lead 

to employment in human resources 

• A cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better 

• Completed Free Application for Federal 

Student Aid (FAFSA) form for the academic 

year requesting the scholarship funds 

• Completed the Muskegon Community College 

General Scholarship Application, attaching an 

additional 500 word essay that explains the 

reason for pursuing a career in human resources 

and related goals for working in this field

contingent upon the student achieving

Wrestling Scholarship 

In memory of former Jayhawk student-athlete 

and assistant wrestling coach, Dan Burt 

Amount: $500 for winter 2014 semester

Requirements: 

• Ottawa or Muskegon County high 

school graduate/wrestler 

• Successful completion of high school 

diploma with a GPA of 2.5 or higher 

• Second season renewal is contingent upon 

the student achieving Satisfactory Academic 

Progress as defined by the College’s policy 

• Submit a completed application and 

essay of 500 words or less expressing 

need for scholarship and career goals. 

Compass Group Scholarship 



Requirements: 

• Muskegon County Resident 

• Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA 

• Must be a full-time student (at 

least 12 credits per semester) 

• For students pursuing a degree in Marketing, 

Management or Computer Technology

Requirements: 

• Students who intend to complete a baccalaureate 

degree in mathematics, science or engineering. 

• High GPA , especially in science/math courses 

• Financial need as determined by

Richard Charles Ford Scholarship 



Requirements: 

• A new or returning MCC student. 

• A plan to study and promote 

the Arts and Humanities 

• 1,000 word essay is required that is on the topic 

“Do the Humanities Matter in Our World?” 

Muskegon Community College 

Board of Trustees Scholarship 


Application: Available from 

high school counselors 

Requirements: 

• Are in-district residents, or who are 

residents of the State of Michigan and 

graduates of an in-district high school 

• Provide verification of the date 

of high school completion 

• Apply for the scholarship by the stated deadline 

• Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.35 

or better and enroll full time at MCC 

• Enroll as a full-time student (at least 12 

credits per semester) no later than the fall 

semester following high school completion. 

• The scholarship award is applied 

toward the full-time tuition charges

Board of Trustees Scholarship 

for Home Schooled 


Application: General plus additional form 

Requirements: 

• Are in-district residents, or who are 

residents of the State of Michigan and 

graduates of an in-district high school

Association Memorial Scholarship 

Amount: $600

• Awarded to student leaving MCC after two 

years of study; 36 credit hours from MCC must 

have been earned at the time of application 

• A completed degree (ASA, AAS, 

etc.) is not required 

• The applicant must supply evidence of 

acceptance at a four-year institution. 

• A 3.25 cumulative GPA is required 

at the time of application. 

• Applicant must be recommended 

by two faculty members 



Association Nielsen Scholarship 

Amount: $200 MCC Bookstore Voucher

Requirements: 

• Successfully completed 12 credit hours 

at MCC with a minimum 2.0 GPA 

• Register to take at least three credits 

at MCC the next winter semester

Association Recognition Scholarship 

Amount: $600

Requirements: 

• A full-time or part-time MCC student 

who has demonstrated financial need in 

order to complete his or her program or 

degree at MCC and returning in fall 

• A 3.25 cumulative GPA (based on a minimum 

of 12 MCC credit hours completed) is

• Applicant must be recommended 

by two faculty members 



Social Sciences Scholarships 

Amount: $500 to $1,000 


Requirements: 

• Full-time student during the award semester 

• Must be enrolled for at least one social 

sciences course during the award semester 

• You must maintain a cumulative 

3.0 GPA or higher 


Muskegon Heights Optimist 

Club Scholarship 

Amount: $250 


Requirements: 

• Must be a resident of Muskegon 

Heights, Michigan 

• Must demonstrate unmet financial 

need, as determined by MCC 

• Must have minimum 2.0 GPA 

• Must be a full-time student (at 

least 12 credits per semester) 




Muskegon Scholars 

Amount: $4,200 for Winter semester 2014

Requirements: 

• For students entering a S.T.E.M. 

(Science, Technology, Engineering, 

or Mathematics) area major 

• Completion of the FAFSA 

• Recommendation from a professional 

regarding the applicant’s aptitude and 

interest in science or mathematics 

• Completion of the math requirement 

for admittance into the program 

• Completion of the scholarship application 

which will include a written essay 

on the S.T.E.M. application 

• Must demonstrate financial need 

Muskegonites Child Study 

Club Scholarship 

Amount: $500-$1,000 ($250 or $500 

per semester, based on credit hours) 


Requirements: 

• Enrolled in an Education program/ 

pursuing teacher certification 

• Successfully completed a minimum of 

12 credit hours at MCC at the time of 

application; enrolled in six or more credit 

hours the following semester at MCC 

• Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA 

• Demonstrate financial need (as determined 

by the Financial Aid Office) 

• Complete application and submit essay 

of 500 words or less expressing need for 

scholarship and discussing career goals 

Performance-Based Scholarships 

Amount: Varies

Requirements: 

• Freshman students who demonstrate a particular 

creative talent (for example: in art, music, 

drama, dance, creative writing, etc.) or a high 

level of achievement in a certain academic area 

• This program is not based on financial need. 

Amos Nordman Foundation 

Scholarship 



Requirements: 

• Minimum 3.0 GPA 

• Available for books, required equipment/ 

supplies, and other MCC-generated fees 

• Financial need as determined by 

the Financial Aid Office 

• Applications accepted anytime 

Larry and Roberta Tetzlaff Scholarship 



Requirements: 

• Students need to meet the Ready to Succeed 

requirements: ACT scores of 24 or higher in 

math, and 19 or higher in English and reading 

• Full-time student status with a 

minimum of 14 credits completed at 


• Declared major with plans to pursue a 

baccalaureate degree in a STEM field 

(science, technology, engineering, or 

math) at an accredited institution 

• Muskegon County with permanent 

United States residency status 

• Demonstrate academic potential or ability, with 

a minimum grade point average of 2.5 GPA. 

• Completed Free Application for Federal 

Student Aid (FAFSA) form for the academic 

year requesting the scholarship funds; the 

FAFSA form should indicate a financial need 

and household income of $74,499 or less 

• Completed the Muskegon Community 

College General Scholarship Application

MCC Scholarships at the 

Community Foundation for Muskegon County 

The following funds are administered by the Community Foundation for Muskegon County 

(CFFMC) for the specific benefit of Muskegon Community College students. Most of 

these awards require that you apply directly to the Community Foundation 

for Muskegon County (visit www.cffmc.org/receive/scholarship). An added benefit of 

applying to this program is that applicants will be considered for ALL CFFMC Scholarships, 

which are provided by over 275 separate scholarship funds. 


Archie McCrea Scholarship 


• For graduates of MCC who are transferring to 

a four-year college or university 

• For students who are pursuing a degree in 

journalism 

• Must demonstrate a GPA of 2.5 or above 



August VanEerden Scholarship 


• For graduates of Muskegon High School who are 

attending MCC 

• For students who are pursuing a degree in 

education 




F. Charles Raap Public Service 



• For a Muskegon County resident 

• Must demonstrate commitment to public

Herman and Marjorie Dekker 



• For a graduate of Muskegon High School or 

Western Michigan Christian High School

• For MCC dance students who wish to attend 

special workshops, summer camps or

• For a Muskegon County resident

• For graduates of Muskegon High School who 

are attending MCC or graduates of MCC 

who are transferring to a four-year college or

Muskegon District Nurses Scholarship 


• MCC student enrolled in a full-time Nursing

• For high school graduating seniors of 

Muskegon, Ottawa, Oceana and Newaygo

• Preference will be given to students pursing a 

degree in a social services field

In addition to scholarships available through 

Muskegon Community College and local 

community foundations, scholarships are 

often available through other sources. Many 

local and national civic and community 

organizations have a long tradition of 

investing in local talent. Scholarships are 

often awarded to those who simply take the 

time to investigate. Your employer may also 

offer educational incentives.

Essay writing tips 

• Make sure you answer the question. 

• Revise. Editing takes time. Spell 

check doesn’t always help. 

• Be yourself and be original. 

• Word choice is important in your 

composition for clarity. 

• Big words don’t necessarily 

mean big scholarships. 

• Spend time on the introduction and 

make body paragraphs relate to it. 

• A good ending is important. 

• Leave it alone for a while then go 

back and take another look. 

• Give your draft to others to review. 

• Revise, revise, and revise!
