with a passion for performance
Message from CEO Richard Macalister
The decision to purchase the majority holding in Nexus Marine along with my business partner Dean
Barker in early 2009 was an easy one as we had long been involved with distributing the Nexus brand
in New Zealand and were impressed with the design quality and reliability of the products.
Nexus Marine is based in Sweden and our two other partners Jan Silfven and Jonas Magner have had
a long association with Nexus from the time it was created as a result of a de-merger of the marine
division from Silva one of the world’s oldest and most respected marine instrument developers. We
all share a love of sailing and our combined knowledge of yachting, from the top end race market
through to the family cruising yacht, gives us a real understanding of needs of the yachtsman and the
conditions in which our instruments must perform.
In a market where mass manufacturing has decreased specialisation, we remain focused on precision
instrumentation for yachts. Our brand is driven by performance and reliability, and has a business
model that allows race yacht innovations to surface in the recreational market.
You can trust Nexus to collect analyse and display the data that informs your sailing decisions. From a
foundation of Swedish precision and excellence, Nexus looks always to the horizon of innovation.
DEAN BARKER – HELPING TO HELM NEXUS
As a major shareholder in Nexus Marine, Dean Barker is able to bring his experience at the
highest level of yacht racing to the boardroom table. His integrity, extraordinary focus and
passion for sailing are a perfect fit with the Nexus philosophy.
Famously calm under pressure, Dean Barker approaches the
yacht equipment business in the same way he approaches
America’s Cup racing. Second is not good enough.
“Getting involved with the marine industry is a natural
progression for me”, says Dean Barker. “Nexus represents the
sharp end of innovation and the company’s business systems
ensure that there’s no room for compromise with quality and
manufacturing standards.”
Dean began his sailing career at 10 years of age and collected
an impressive range of yachting titles in P-class and Laser
yachts before he graduated to the unforgiving world of
matchracing. His first taste of America’s Cup campaigning
came when he was invited to help Team New Zealand with
their preparations for the 1995 campaign. While he declined to
join the racing in San Diego, opting instead to concentrate on
his Olympic Finn obligations, Dean signed on for Team New
Zealand’s 2000 defence of the cup.
It was Dean’s task to provide the Team New Zealand race
team with a worthy competitor during preparation for the
defence. He helmed the tune-up boat, often getting the better
of Russell Coutts at all stages of racing. America’s Cup history
was made when Dean, aged just 26, helmed NZL60 to victory
in the final race of Team New Zealand’s 5-0 ‘blackwash’ over
challenger Prada on Thursday 2 March 2000.
Dean continues to be central to New Zealand’s America’s
Cup and Louis Vuitton Trophy ambitions. He also hopes to sail
in the next Tour de France à la Voile. The challenge is raced
in new Archambault-designed M34’s, which are equipped
with Nexus instrumentation. “Getting selected as the official
electronics supplier for the Tour de France à la Voile M34s is a
huge tick for Nexus”, says Dean.
A Passion for development
Since its creation in 2006, Nexus Marine, has achieved a leading market position offering reliable and accurate
products with innovative features and designs focused on the unique requirements of the sailing yacht.
Leading the research and development team is Jan Silfvén who came to Nexus from the demerger of Silva. He
has over 20 years experience in marine electronics development. Added to this he is a keen sailor giving him a
huge understanding of the requirements of both the racing and recreational sailor. Jan works closely with Dean
Barker in the development of new products for the racing market.
Jan Silfvén commented: “We really believe that having one of the worlds best racing sailors on our research and
development team gives us a leading edge in understanding the needs of the racing sailor and ensuring we can
provide the most advanced technologies for our customers”.
In addition to the input from Dean, Nexus maintains a pro-active research programme and is attentive to feedback
from all customers, agents, sales representatives and sailors in order to know the best way to improve the existing
products
The company operates both in-house and on the water testing with a view to improve the products’ performance
and development of new products, always with the intention of ensuring they are satisfying their customers who
look for advanced equipment that give safety, simplicity and improved functionality on the water.
The team at Nexus understands the unique demands of the yachtsman and is passionate about developing
products for you.
Wind transducers: the twin fin technology
Our wind transducers are all based on the same twin fin technology. It features a three-bladed propeller and double
wind vanes, which are toed in to give extremely good stability in both low and high wind speeds. The three-bladed
propeller, unlike the more common cups design, is always 100% efficient. That, together with the optic reading
technique, makes Nexus transducers superior at low wind speeds and also provides for excellent linearity. What’s
more, all our wind transducers are mounted on a carbon arm for more resistance and durability.
nexus New generation
adBOX
The new adBOX has been created by us to expand the ability of the Nexus Network
to connect to an increased range of transducers and sensors giving you even more
flexibility to design a system that meets your specific requirements.
HPC Compass
The HPC Compass features a 6-axis configuration that also incorporates heel and
pitch. It provides exceptionally accurate vital data, such as true wind angle, even
when the boat is heeled right over. Nexus HPC Compass represents a real advance
in high-end racing compass transducers.
NX INSTRUMENTATION - SAIL INTO THE AGE OF WIRELESS
The NX range – precision instruments
for sail and power
You might not be battling around the buoys every weekend,
but you still deserve the very best in marine instrumentation.
For too long the racing boats have had the monopoly on stylish
design, top quality displays and the latest in computer and
networking technology. It’s time to level the playing field.
Nexus NX instrumentation offers cruising yachtsmen an entrylevel
system that combines precision, elegant styling and top
quality displays with a flexibility that allows your system to
grow with you as your needs and ambitions develop.
While the NX system has a race boat pedigree, the system is
designed to be quick to set up and simple to operate. Cabling
has been kept to an absolute minimum, in fact done away with
altogether as far as the wireless wind transducer is concerned,
to keep installation as easy as possible.
Easy system expansion
Start with a single Sea Data display, WSI connection box and
log transducer that gives your boat speed and distance run,
and then add additional capabilities as your needs change,
such as combi and wind transducers, with all the information
transmitted by a single cable. Or, if you choose, you can have
multiple multifunction Sea Data instruments on deck or at the
chart table. The NX Wind Instrument adds the final touch,
displaying true and apparent wind data in digital and easy-toread
graphical form.
Information at your fingertips
The Sea Data lets you switch between depth, speed and wind
angles quickly and simply using buttons and menus. It couldn’t
be simpler. The information you request will be displayed in
large, clear digits that all your crew will find easy to read.
NX DISPLAYS
The NX system offers two, versatile displays to meet all the needs of the cruising navigator; the digital
multifunction Sea Data and the digital / analogue Wind Instrument, for maximum convenience and flexibility.
Sea Data Instrument
Art.No. 22932, NX Start Pack 2
The NX range offers various possibilities with transducers. The choice of your transducer will depend on
the information you want and on the size of the hole you have in your boat
Two sizes of through-hull transducers exist: the 43 mm and the 52mm. At Nexus, we recommend 43 mm
transducers, because they are more accurate at low speed. However, if you already have 52mm holes in
your boat, we can provide the larger size.
Finally, if you don’t want to make a hole in the hull, or if your type of boat isn’t compatible with through-hull
transducers, you can choose the Nexus transom-mounted transducer, which delivers speed, depth and
temperature data.
NX2 instrumentation
Racing and cruising now have one thing in common – precise information
While analogue instruments continue to play a vital role in navigation, due to the immediate impact they have on the
visual senses, the majority of today’s sailors rely on digital displays for their essential information. Only digital can
supply the level of precision needed to monitor minute changes in important variables, often down to as little as one
hundredth of a unit.
The Nexus NX2 system takes this advantage a stage further by linking all its digital instruments with a network. The
benefit is that when new settings are keyed into one digital instrument, all the other instruments on the network
receive the information simultaneously. This is an especially handy when a sailor wants to add trim values, activate
lighting, clear the trip metre or calibrate instruments.
Another important advantage is the ability to manage waypoints. You can enter or select waypoints from anywhere
onboard - at the wheel or helm, at the navigation table or on the fly-bridge.
Optimal function, readability and quality
The network has been designed to connect three groups of core components in the most effective way. The NX2
Range offers both digital and analogue instruments, a server and five different categories of transducer (log-temp/
depth/wind/compass/GPS).
NX2 System and FDX
NEXUS is the Latin word for “connection” summing up exactly what the
NEXUS network is all about. The NX2 system allows full interfacing with
other third party equipment, which is NMEA compatible, allowing a fully
integrated system giving the user a vast array of information on three
types of displays - the standard LCD, Analogue or large digit XL displays.
NX2 systems are supplied with FDX software (Fast Data eXchange)
opening the door to laptop convenience. FDX, together with the Nexus
race software, increases the speed at which the information flows through
the network by up to 10 times. FDX extends the frontiers of sailboat
racing.
Nexus Race Software also revolutionises the way calibration is done within
the system. Now, from the laptop, you can adjust settings, calibrate and
auto-deviate the compass. Difficulties in calibrating wind speed and wind
angles become a thing of the past – the unique Nexus software does the
job for you.
So if you are a cruising or racing yachtsmen who requires integration with
computers, chart plotters or other equipment the NX2 system allows
you to build a system with a range of displays which is perfect for your
requirements.
Nexus Server
The Nexus Server functions as a terminal station for the Nexus Network to
which all transducers, NMEA input and output are connected. Furthermore,
the Server has outputs for external M.O.B. (Man Over Board) and trim
buttons and an external alarm. All screw terminals are clearly marked for easy
installation. The NX2 unique plug wiring system enables a tidy and clean
installation below deck with no excess cables.
nx2 analogue
NX2 Steer Pilot
This is our most interesting and effective analogue instrument, drawing information from the electronic compass, waterspeed
sensor and the GPS to create one single piece of critical data represented by the needle! The Steer pilot enables
the helmsman to steer to an exact course using updated steering information refreshed 5 times every second by the NX2
server. The instrument needle instantly indicates the smallest deviation from the intended course or preferred wind angle.
The Steer Pilot can also guide the helmsman to steer by the needle using the data from a Polar Diagram as reference.
On a downwind course, the Steer Pilot enables the helmsman to steer the optimum course for the best VMG, refreshing
the data five times per second.
So, how do I use it? It’s really very easy. With a steering wheel, imagine that the instrument needle is connected by an
invisible wire to the centre of your wheel. When the deviation appears, just turn the wheel as if it was connected to the
needle, back to a straight up position, it’s that easy!
With a tiller, imagine that the end of the tiller is ”fixed” at the tip of the needle and that you can pull the needle back to
its straight up position just by ”dragging” it there, it just works! After a few minutes training you will be able to steer your
boat in a straight line without even thinking!
NX2 Compass
The Nexus NX2 analogue Compass repeater
and compass heading displays have superb
readability. A sensitive pointer on the 360°
scale gives an accurate and stable compass
heading.
Every now and then a new sailboat comes along that fulfils a real need in the market. Launched in July 2010 the J/111
is a sleek, speedy, one-design 36 footer that is the ultimate day sailing, racing and weekend cruising sailboat. Designed
to be the best performing, easiest-to-sail boat of its size on the market it also offers the creature comforts needed (6’
headroom) to satisfy the occasional overnight cruise.
The new J/111 hull #1 is fitted with 4 mast mounted XL20’s that, by using either the ”hotkeys” on the two cockpit
mounted NXR Multi controls or the on board computer, with a single button press will display the information the crew
needs. The four cockpit mounted Multi XL’s constantly provide a further 8 lines of data, the selection of these again being
made using either the NXR Multi Controls or the on board computer. An Autopilot display/control completes the selection
of digital displays fitted. In addition to the digital displays two analogue ”Steer Pilot” displays are fitted, these can be set
up to give the crew a clear visual indication of alterations in course that may be required to get the very best out of the
boat.
As J Boat says “It’s all about versatility and the joy of sailing - how to have the most fun out of the time and resources
invested” a sentiment easily understood and shared by the team at Nexus Marine.
NXR instrumentation
The NXR racing instrumentation system is the ultimate in integrated networking for sailors who demand the best. It delivers fast
update speeds of 8Hz and a range of displays that allows both racing and cruising crews to select a data combination that will
meet their exact requirements.
nexus new generation:
The Nexus NXR new generation enables you to monitor load cells and to make a Nexus complete integrated system for your racing
boat improving your performance. The NXR new generation with the adBOX(analogue digital) and the nWIND also enables weight
savings thanks to an innovative wiring technology. One of the new features of the NXR range is also the new bonded NXR Multi
Control displays, avoiding any moisture behind the screen even in the worst conditions.
PC integration/calibration
Every system is supplied with the FDX software, which allows
the user to calibrate the system, easily and quickly from their PC.
FDX software permits fast data exchange on the network and up
to ten lines of race software generated data to be displayed.
FLEXIBILITY of displays
The NXR system has a wide range of displays, allowing you
to tailor-make an information system that suits your individual
requirements. The NXR multis come with two options: standard
LCDs and the innovative inverted LCD, which reduces the light
shining from the display at night to allow easy night vision. Large
digit displays are available with the XL20 (46mm digits) and
the XL30 (63.5mm digits), so that essential data can be easily
seen on even the largest yacht. NXR analogue displays are also
available for users who prefer data displayed by way of a pointer.
Additionally, you can select between red and green backlighting
for optimal viewing at night.
Accuracy of information
A huge amount of time, energy and knowledge has been poured
into developing NEXUS transducers, to ensure the accuracy
of the information entering the system. The brief given to the
research and development team was to think outside the square
and design the best anemometer available. The team came up
with a low drag unit that utilises a twin fin for a more stable wind
direction, while utilising a propeller for measuring wind speed.
The result is greater accuracy at low wind speeds. Coupled with
that is a leading-edge HPC compass that utilises heel and trim to
provide an accurate heading, as well as true wind information.
Ease of use
The displays are designed to be remarkably easy to use. Four preprogrammed
menu pages ensure that mast displays can be set
up with the push of one button. Come to the top mark and hoist
the spinnaker, push one button and the cockpit crew can have all
the information they need.
M34 and Nexus instrumentation add extra
excitement to the 2011 Tour de France á la Voile
The annual Tour de France á la Voile is a multi-stage, monthlong
race that links the English Channel to the French Riviera.
With an original blend of buoy racing and lengthy offshore
legs, it is one of the world’s most challenging one-design
series.
The inaugural Tour de France á la Voile was sailed in 1978.
Since then more than 20,000 people have sailed the race,
including many famous yachtsmen – Loïck Peyron and four
times America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts, to name just a
couple. Due to three distinct rankings, this sailing challenge
is not just for professionals - amateurs and students can rub
shoulders with the elite sailors. Of the 28 boats that took
part in the 2010 event, entries were divided almost equally
between students, amateurs and professionals.
Like its famous cycling counterpart, the Tour de France à la
Voile does a marvellous job of showcasing France’s scenery.
The event visits around 10 harbours along the French coast.
These vary from year to year, so that the excitement is shared
amongst the coastal towns. Midway through the race, the
boats are transported between the Atlantic Ocean and the
Mediterranean Sea by road.
The 2011 event will see the introduction of a new yacht design
– the M34, which is built by Archambault and designed by
Joubert-Nivelt. This design was selected after an extensive
review of more than 20 yacht designers and builders.
“I think it will be much more fun than a typical IRC boat of its
size,” says Philippe Paturel of Archambault North America.
“And, because it was designed with a lot of consultation from
many Tour de France competitors, it will be well developed.”
In terms of the overall design, the M34 is a powerful boat
with a formidable sail plan. Its higher freeboard (relative to
the Farr 30) is a major contributor to superior ocean-passage
worthiness and it’s fully compliant with ORC offshore
regulations.
As a global player in the design and manufacture of
navigational instrumentation, Nexus Marine is proud to have
been chosen as the exclusive electronics supplier for the M34.
All the boats will be fitted with the NXR range, which features
the newly released Nexus XL20, a large digit repeating
instrument for high performance boats. The XL20 allows
sailors to customise the information they receive and vital data
is easily visible, thanks to its larger screen and selectable red
or green background lighting.
“Getting selected as the exclusive electronics supplier for the
Tour de France à la Voile M34 is a huge tick for Nexus”, says
Dean Barker. “These boats and their equipment will lead the
way in the future of one-design sailing and Nexus is excited to
be part of it.”
5. Drive Unit
Art. No: 69989-12
The Drive Units are specifically designed for autopilot use to give high
mechanical and hydraulic accuracy with a long lifecycle. Offering low
internal leakage to give faster and more accurate steering with low
power consumption, they provide extreme rudder precision via variable
motor speeds and soft start/stop. Silent operation makes them very
popular with sail boat owners.
Nexus offers two types of hydraulic drive units: the Integrated Linear
Drive for mechanical steering and the Pumpset for vessels with
hydraulic steering. The weather resistant design with its compact size
allows for installation in constricted areas. The servo can also be set up
transducers
wind transducers: tHe twin fin tecHnologY
Nexus has left nothing to chance. The best displays that money can buy will not make up for low-grade information sent from sub-standard
sources, which is why Nexus has always paid special attention to the design and production of its transducers.
Our wind transducers are all based on the same twin fin technology. It features a three-bladed propeller and double wind vanes, which are
toed in to give extremely good stability in both low and high wind speeds. The three-bladed propeller, unlike the more common cups design,
is always 100% efficient. That, together with the optic reading technique, makes Nexus transducers superior at low wind speeds and also
provides for excellent linearity. What’s more, all our wind transducers are mounted on a carbon arm for more resistance and durability.
Nexus offer a range of three wind transducers:
Wireless Wind Transducer
The twin fin wireless wind transducer brings all the advantages of wireless
instrumentation to the cruising sailor. Gone are the complications and aesthetic
issues of running wiring from the top of the mast down to the chart table.
Instead, the wind transducer establishes a unique pairing using radio signals with
the WSI connection box. This forms the core of the NX instrumentation system,
ensuring that each transducer / server pairing is distinct from every other. The
information is then fed from the WSI connection box to your Nexus network,
thanks to Nexus FDX protocol.
The twin fin design makes this a highly stable and accurate wind transducer. The
internal batteries are continuously charged by a small solar panel mounted on the
transducer arm, have a life of around three to four years, and are easily replaced.
Art. No: 22922 Wireless Wind Transducer without WSI-box
Art. No: 22927 WSI-box
WSI (Wireless Sensor Interface)
Connection Box
The Wireless Server Interface (WSI)
connection box forms the core of the
NX instrumentation system; the central
point at which all the data collected
from the transducers is processed
and then sent down a single cable to
the Sea Data and, if installed, Wind
Instrument displays. Among its many
functions, the WSI combines boat
speed and apparent wind speed and
angle, to calculate the true wind speed
and angle. The WSI communicates
directly with the wireless wind
transducer via a unique radio pairing,
and the slim and compact box is quick and simple to install.
nWind Transducer
New for 2011 the nWIND transducer
connects directly to the Nexus
network providing 30% faster data
transmission to the system. The
highly successful design of the
masthead anemometer has been
retained with the use of a propeller
providing a more accurate True Wind
Speed (TWS) in lighter air whilst the
twin fin design gives a more stable
True Wind Direction (TWD). An
easy, snap-in attachment for mast
mounting is included. The nWIND
transducer provides a highly accurate
output for the Nexus network.
nWind Race Transducer
The nWIND Race Wind transducer overcomes the problem of upwash
affecting the accuracy of wind information by raising the sensor above the
mast top.
The nWIND Race transducer connects directly to the Nexus network
providing 30% faster data
transmission to the system whilst
allowing you to store calibration
tables in the system for True Wind
Angle (TWA) and True Wind Speed
(TWS). The result is extremely
accurate and fast wind data
information which is all good news
for the racing yachtsman.
As with both the wireless and
conventional forward-facing
masthead wind sensors, each unit
is factory calibrated to take out
any sensor anomalies. This results
in very accurate wind speed and direction information. These calibration
values are permanently stored within the masthead unit. Using the FDX
software provided with every NX2 and NXR pack, it is possible to calibrate
the masthead unit to also take the effects of wind shear into account,
making this a highly accurate wind sensor for both the racing and cruising
yachtsmen.
The nWIND Race transducer offers three mounting options: a conventional
flat base, which is screwed to the top of the mast, a spigot type base, and
for those unable to fit the vertical bracket a forward mounting option.
nexus new generation
adBox
An exciting new product has been created by Nexus the adBOX
(Analogue Digital Box) which was originally designed for a 62 m ketch
built at the reputable superyacht builder Alloy Yachts in New Zealand.
Expansion of the NXR system with additional equipment at any stage is
simplified as the addition of the adBOX will allow additional information
to be integrated into the Nexus network.
Nexus is Latin for connection and the addition of the adBOX expands
the ability of the Nexus network to connect to an increased range of
transducers and sensors giving you even more flexibility to design a
system that meets your specific requirements.
The adBOX allows you to connect analogue signals into your system
such as load cells and string pods.
HPC Compass
HPC (Heel Pitch Compensated) solid state Compass Transducer uses
the latest materials and precision engineering techniques to produce the
highest quality data of its kind. It is accurate to +/- 1˚ up to a maximum heel
angle of 60˚ and with an output rate that can be set up to 10Hz. Now also
available as a NMEA compatible unit which works with all NMEA 0183
systems.
The HPC features a 6-axis configuration that also incorporates heel and
pitch. It provides exceptionally accurate vital data, such as true wind angle,
even when the boat is heeled right over.
Nexus HPC Compass represents a real advance in high-end racing
compass transducers. It combines accuracy and the ability to integrate
with a wide range of navigational systems with a stylish, sophisticated
and compact structure that requires minimal space and maintenance. Now
a standard component of the Nexus multi-instrumentation systems, the
HPC transducer is also available as a stand-alone unit for owners looking to
upgrade their existing systems. The entire instrument is the size of a small
mobile phone and weighs just 40 grams.
Heel Switch System
The team at Nexus developed the Heel Switch System to solve the
speed discrepancy problems experienced when the speed and depth
transducers need to be installed away from the centre line. These
variances are common on multihulls, modern day short-handed yachts
and older classic keel style designs.
The Heel Switch System consists of two small heel boxes - one for
port and one for starboard - into which the two pairs of transducers are
wired. These boxes process the raw speed, water temperature and
depth data into the Nexus protocol, automatically selecting the correct
box depending on which tack / gybe the yacht is on.
The switching between the port and starboard boxes is done
automatically depending on the heel of the boat, which is provided by a
HPC Compass. If a compass isn’t fitted, the switching will be made on
the apparent wind angle.
Specifications
The Heel Switch Systems includes
two heel switch boxes (one port and
one starboard) and one 0.4m interconnection
cable.
Choose your compass
Which compass do I need?
What kind of boat do you have?
Scratch resistant capsule bowl
Liquid filled capsule
Illumination
The main difference between a powerboat compass and a sailboat compass is the heeling angle limit and the damping
characteristics. A powerboat compass has fixed lubber lines to maintain the best dynamics, while steel boats need
compasses with D-correctors or soft iron correctors.
Individually balanced
compass card
Ring magnet
Fully adjustable cover
NO SPIN compass card
Which size of compass do I need?
What is the size of your boat?
If the compass will be read from a distance you will need a bigger
compass. The simple thumb rule is: a boat longer than 7,5 meters
(25 feet) requires a 100 series capsule or larger.
70 series has an apparent scale of 70mm
100 series has an apparent scale of 100mm
125 series has an apparent scale of 125mm
What type of mounting do I need?
Where will the compass be mounted?
There is a Silva compass for every mounting need. In the
bulkhead, on the dashboard, on the headlining, on the mast
etc. All models are designed so that no unnecessary drilling is
needed.
Why do I need a compensator?
We strongly recommend the use of a compensator, and not only
in steel boats. Almost all models can be supplied with a built-in
compensator to avoid magnetic disturbances. Such disturbances
will be found on any boat, the source varies from loudspeakers to
the radio, engine, wipers, electronic instruments (not NX2) and
other metallic components. Remember that the distance to the
source is more critical than its strength.
All Silva marine compasses have 5 years warranty.
The bulkhead mount compasses (70P, 100P, 102B/H, 100B/H and 125B/H) are specifically designed for
sailboats and yachtsmen demanding absolute accuracy with a steady card in all conditions and
125
accommodating high heeling angles.
Bulkhead-mounted front reading series with 3 yellow lubber lines for the 100 series and one yellow lubber
line for the 70 series. The gimballed lubber lines stay vertical even if the boat is heeling (max 45°). The two
extra lubber lines at 45° offset permit reading from the rail or an off steering position mounting.
Flush and pedestal mount compasses
The flush and pedestal mount compasses are designed for those yachtsmen that demand absolutely accuracy
and a steady card in all conditions, despite the heeling angle.
An extended centre needle eliminates parallax errors and the gimballed yellow lubber lines stay vertical
Sail race compasses
The Elite racing models have been developed by the world’s top racers and Olympic sailors. The tactical scales and quick
readability give a critical advantage. The cone-shaped card with gimballed lubber lines has a main steering scale on the
horizontal part of the compass card and a tactical scale on the vertical edge of the card.
150
Detecting wind shifts may be the tiny difference between winning and losing. Silva’s tactical scale grades from 0-20 and the
figures correspond on port and starboard tack. If the reading on starboard tack is 2 the reading on port after tacking should
also be 2. In this way you only have to remember one figure. This is a great benefit in triangular course sailing where racers
need to watch the wind shifts, rather than their actual course.
The double scale, divided into a green starboard and a red port scale, allows sailors to read the actual course on port and
starboard tack from the helmsman’s normal position at the rail. You no longer have to add 45° to your reading. The green and
red memory arrows tell you to tack if the figures decreases on starboard tack and to tack if the figures increase on port. The
top scale allows you to read the course on downwind or to check the start line position.
73R
73R is the perfect combination compass. It can be installed in any
inclination or position with a bracket that allows for fast and easy
removal. The handle makes it useful as a sighting compass; simply
remove the compass from its bracket and sight the mark to determine
the bearing. Tactical compass scale on the vertical part of the card.
