DearFriends of the Foundation,
As Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors,
I have been honored to represent my fellow Board
Members in a number of capacities. The Board of
Directors compromises 30 prominent business and
community leaders who share a commitment to
building a strong community through volunteerism
and education. We recognize that the mission of
the College is a worthy investment of our time
and talents. With many academic offerings in fields that support our local
businesses and industries, Delaware County Community College, now
more than ever, is the right choice for our community and its residents.
Foundation support focuses exclusively on students, faculty, programs and
facilities. Board Members serve on various committees throughout the year,
assisting the Foundation in managing its enterprise and advancing its noble
purpose. Board Members also are advocates for the College within the
community, resulting frequently in the development of mutually-beneficial
partnerships.
We are very proud of the strong program of support that our scholarship
donors continue to provide for our students. Their generosity sustains the
program year after year while rewarding and encouraging the academic
achievements of our students. In recent years, the Dreamkeepers program has
kept the dream of a college degree alive for many students who confronted
unforeseen financial challenges that could have disrupted their education.
The success of many students can be attributed to the scholarships and
emergency grants offered through the Foundation.
The economy has presented many challenges over the past few years. Our
gratitude for the donors who have made sacrifices to sustain the Foundation’s
programs during this period is more vigorous than ever. I extend my personal
thanks along with those of my fellow Board Members to the many donors
who invested in the College during this fiscal year.
Sincerely yours,
William E. Sockwell
Dreamkeepers provides emergency financial assistance to community
college students who would otherwise be forced to drop out of school
because of a financial crisis. Dreamkeepers was established at Delaware
County Community College in 2010 with the assistance of a three-year
grant of $75,000 from Scholarship America ® . The College is required to
match these funds, resulting in a fund of $150,000 for student financial
emergencies. Grants are awarded through the Career and Counseling
Center, and funds are paid out through the Delaware County
Community College Educational Foundation.
3 ways dreamkeepers helps students
• Dreamkeepers empowers students to overcome financial emergencies.
• Dreamkeepers connects students to support systems.
• Dreamkeepers provides an online financial literacy tool that helps educate students
on critical financial management skills.
a promise to students
A single grant award, paired with intervention on the part of the College counseling
staff, can be the most effective way to encourage persistence among affected students
who would otherwise leave school. So, we make this promise to our students: Ask for
help before you disappear, and we will do everything in our power to stem the
emergency you face, so that you may reach your educational objectives by your own
efforts. An emergency is defined as “any situation where students find they need to
pick between staying in school and leaving school to fulfill a financial obligation.”
one of the top reasons for attrition
Unexpected financial emergencies were listed as one of the top reasons community
college students drop out according to a 2010 study by the Center for American
Progress. Four of the top eight attrition factors in the study were traced to student
financial burdens and work-life issues.
how the community benefits
When students succeed through interventions like Dreamkeepers, the community
benefits by not having to support them in other ways – and the community benefits
through their subsequent contributions in the work force. Everyone benefits from
having well-educated community members contributing to the economy, raising
healthy families, joining the middle class and giving back to the community.
The ongoing construction on the Marple Campus serves as a constant reminder
that the College is undergoing a transformation. Built in the early 1970s, the
original buildings reflect a bygone era of technology, design and decor. The
College’s investments in capital improvements, expansion and renovations are
being made to reflect technological and pedagogical advances in education.
Renovations to the Library and Auditorium are underway, and the promise
of extraordinary things to come is about to be fulfilled with the opening of the
new Learning Commons and Auditorium. A fundraising campaign to assist in
the renovations of these prominent facilities also is underway, and all constituents
of the College are being asked to help. For more information on these projects,
please contact the Foundation Office.
Dear Donors,
Throughout the past year, we have thanked
you for your contributions to the Foundation.
The annual report presents another opportunity
to express our gratitude and to document your
generosity. Contributions in 2011-12 totaled
$1,033,231, representing support for capital
and annual programs.
Once again, the Annual Fund campaign focused on the Dreamkeepers
Program, which required that we match $25,000 of a three-year $75,000
grant to provide emergency funding to students. For two consecutive years,
we succeeded in surpassing our goal and earned a $10,000 bonus grant.
Thanks to our donors, we were able to assist 45 students with essential needs,
such as housing, food, transportation, child care, car repairs and utility bills.
Gifts to the Gateway to Opportunity Capital Campaign for the STEM
Complex are nearly paid off with $47,843 being contributed in 2011-12.
Funding for Phase II of the Gateway to Opportunity Capital Campaign has
begun to support development of the Learning Commons and Auditorium.
This report also showcases the Foundation’s Annual Dinner, which recognizes
all those involved with the scholarship program. With 117 scholarship and
award programs, the Foundation continues to welcome new donors each year.
These donors join a list of alumni, faculty, friends, board members,
corporations, foundations and other organizations whose longstanding
support has assisted worthy students for many years.
Among the scholarship programs is the Lou W. Scott III Memorial
Scholarship, which is bolstered every year by the annual Lou Scott Golf
Classic. As noted in this report, this event has continued to attract 100 or
more golfers each year for the past 12 years, raising nearly $150,000. It is just
one example of the commitment of our scholarship donors to the well-being
of our students and our community.
Your continuing support of the Foundation’s mission plays an essential role in
the College’s student retention effort. It is also a vote of confidence in the
work of faculty and administration. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Kathleen A. Breslin
The Gift That Gives Back
The significant benefits of the charitable gift annuity are
made possible because of the participation of a charitable
organization. Delaware County Community College serves
over 28,000 students annually throughout Delaware
and Chester Counties and is a symbol of educational
opportunity in this region. Your gift will help to fill
the gaps in the College’s public funding and better
enable it to carry out its core mission of affordable,
accessible education for the residents of its
service community.
