MONTMARTRE’S DAM
TOPS OPENING SESSION
The new format Arqana December Sale got underway
yesterday at their Deauville complex. The day that in
previous years was dedicated to yearlings has been
removed and the catalogue now has four days devoted
entirely to breeding stock. The sales complex was bustling
throughout the day, with many visitors taking advantage of
the flights put on by Arqana to come directly from
Tattersalls December Sale, writes Sally Ann Grassick
Robert Nataf of Horse France stood alongside Timmy
Hyde, Pat Shanahan and M V Magnier, representing
Coolmore, while fighting out a lengthy bidding war with
Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock before finally acquiring
Lot 213, Artistique (Linamix), the almost snow white
dam of the French Champion Three-Year-Old Montmartre
(Montjeu), for €520,000, to top the opening session’s
trading late in the day. “She was the pick of the catalogue
for me”, explained Nataf, “It is not every day that you have
the opportunity to purchase a mare capable of breeding a
Gr.1 winner, so we were very keen to get her.” Consigned
by The Aga Khan Studs, the 15 year-old mare has
produced numerous winners in addition to Montmartre,
including Artistica (Spectrum), who was third in the Gr.3
Prix de Royaumont, and Artiste Of The World (Spinning
World), the winner of six races. She was sold in foal to
Cape Cross, having produced a Sinndar filly earlier this
year.

Nicolas De Watrigant of Mandore International was one
of the names to follow when he successfully purchased
three of the top ten lots on behalf of Ling and Christopher
Tsui, a fact that he kept a closely guarded secret right up
until the end of the day. De Watrigant went to €450,000 for
the four-year-old mare Lot 24, Jumooh (Monsun), who
led the way as the top lot for most of the day, and
afterwards he commented, “She has an exceptional
pedigree and for me was the best looking mare of the sale.
She is by a top class sire in Monsun and is carrying her
first foal by Invincible Spirit, who is also a very exciting
stallion. It is a very current and interesting pedigree that is
developing daily.” Jumooh, who was consigned by Haras
du Quesnay, is a half-sister to Maqaasid (Green Desert),
the winner of the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot
and was placed in the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas and the Gr.1
Cheveley Park Stakes. Their dam is a half-sister to the Gr.1
1,000 Guineas and Gr.1 Coronation Stakes winner
Ghanaati (Giant’s Causeway) and the young Shadwell
sire Mawatheeq (Danzig) and comes from the immediate
family of Nayef, Nashwan, Unfuwain et al. De Watrigant
also bought Lot 176, the eleven-year-old Hidden Silver
(Anabaa), who is the dam of the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des
Poulains winner and young Haras de la Hetraie sire Silver
Frost (Verglas) and was consigned by Haras des
Sablonnets. “She is obviously the dam of a French
Guineas winner, which was very enticing”, said De
Watrigant. “She is a smashing looking mare and is by
Anabaa, who is a very good sire of dams. Another bonus
for us is the fact that she is in foal to Dubawi, which is a
cross that works very well with granddaughters of Danzig,
as in the case of Makfi and Poet’s Voice.” The third mare
acquired was the Haras des Capuchines-consigned Lot
194, Scarlet And Gold (Peintre Celebre), a three-yearold
half-sister to the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club winner and

young sire Le Havre (Noverre), for €240,000. “We were
particularly interested in her, as her dam, Marie
Rheinberg [Surako], has a magnificent foal by Sea The
Stars and, of course, due to her being a half-sister to a
horse like Le Havre. All three mares will now go to Gilltown
Stud, where they will be covered by Sea The Stars in the
future. Mrs Tsui and her son Christopher were very keen to
acquire some mares here, as we were unlucky in
Newmarket [at Tattersalls] and supporting Sea The Stars
is very important to both of them after all the pleasure he
has provided in recent times.”
Tatsuya Yoshida, sitting alongside Patrick Barbe, was
also very prominent, notching up two of the top five lots
on behalf of Shadai Farms. They outbid Australia’s Paul
Makin to purchase Lot 172, the seven-year-old May
Kiersey (Sadler’s Wells), whose Danehill Dancer filly
foal was bought by Peter Doyle Bloodstock for
155,000gns at the recent Tattersalls December Foal Sale.
May Kiersey, who was consigned by Haras d’Etreham and
is in foal to Fastnet Rock, is a full-sister to the dual Gr.3
winner and Gr.1 Prix de Diana-second Gagnoa and a halfsister
to the Gr.1 Derby winner and new Coolmore sire
Pour Moi (Montjeu), was bought for €400,000. They also
snapped up the four-year-old filly Lot 185, Evading
Tempete (Dubai Destination), who was consigned by
Haras des Capucines, for €360,000. Yoshida explained
afterwards, “They will both go to Japan but no decision
has yet been made as to which stallion they will be
covered by. They are both good looking mares with very
nice pedigrees, so obviously we were interested in them.”

sale for us and we were worried that we wouldn’t get her
for a minute there! Evading Tempete has the interesting
characteristic in that she has won in France and Italy [Gr.3
Premio Regina Elena] and been placed in France [second
in the Gr.3 Prix Imprudence], England, North America and
Turkey. I think that she will make a very nice broodmare.”
Another mare destined for Japan is the five-year-old
mare Lot 164, Samaaha (Singspiel), after she was
purchased by Katsumi Yoshida from the Haras du
Mezeray draft for €280,000. “She will join our purchases
from Tattersalls for exportation to Japan in the near future.
We have not yet decided on a stallion for her but her
pedigree will work with all of our stallions. I think we paid
a fair price for her considering she is carrying her first foal
by Dubawi, who is a very hot sire at the moment.”
Samaaha is out of the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont winner
Genovefa (Woodman), who also foaled Mamool (In The
Wings), winner of the Gr.1 Grosser Preis Von Baden, the
Gr.1 Preis Von Europa and the Gr.2 Yorkshire Cup and now
standing at Gestut Romerhof in Germany.
Just a few lots earlier, Paul Fudge of Waratah
Thoroughbreds went to €350,000 to acquire Lot 161,
Insoumise (Galileo), a three-year-old filly who was
consigned by the Wertheimer Brothers and comes from
the family of Groom Dancer, Falco, Vert Amande, Le
Nain Jaune, as well as the 2011 Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe winner Danedream. “She is a lovely individual
from a good family and is a half-sister to some very nice
horses. She will fit very nicely into our breeding
programme.” Insoumise is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Grand
Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Plumania (Anabaa), who also
read the figures!

finished second in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille on two
occasions and third in the Gr.1 Prix de Diane, as well as
the Gr.2 Prix de Royallieu winner Balladeuse (Singspiel).
Their dam Featherquest (Rainbow Quest) also has a
two-year-old filly, named Secrete (Cape Cross), who is in
training with Andre Fabre but has yet to race in the famous
blue and white Wertheimer colours.
Le Havre had his first foal offered at auction and Mags
O’Toole paid €52,000 for Lot 129, a colt out of Seracina
(Nashwan) and consigned by Haras de la Louviere. The
underbidder for the foal was Sylvain Vidal on behalf of
Gerard Augustin Normand, whose colours Le Havre
carried to victory in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club and who
now stands the five-year-old stallion at his farm, Haras de
la Cauviniere. O’Toole later confirmed that the foal will be
offered for re-sale as a yearling at Arqana next year. She
was also responsible for purchasing the top priced foal of
the day, Lot 183, a colt by Montjeu, for €145,000 from
Haras des Capucines, whose close relatives include the
Gr.1 winners Verveine, Volga, Vallee Enchantee,
Vespone, Maids Causeway et al. Demand for the
Coolmore sire was such that he also had the second
highest priced foal, Lot 143, another son, who was sold
privately for €140,000. Consigned by Haras d’Etreham, he
comes from the family of the Gr.1 Irish St Leger and Gr.1
Preis von Europa winner Jukebox Jury, yet another son
of Montjeu.
A few minutes from the final fall of Bernard de Reviers’s
hammer, bidding soared to €310,000 for the Gr.1 Poule
d’Essai des Pouliches runner-up Baine (Lot 227), offered
out of training by Haras du Berlais. The beautiful filly
boasts an intriguing pedigree, being by Country Reel and
from the maternal family of the same sire. She went the
way of Patricia Boutin (Suprina), following a fierce battle
with Northern Farm.
Day One returned a set of figures largely up from last
year’s, which had already been judged extremely
satisfactory. The turnover was €11,882,000 (including
private sales), up 5.2% from 2010, while the average price
rose 18.7% to reach a record €74,044. 148 of the 210
fillies, mares and foals on offer changed hands, 70.5%, the
only indicator that could not match last year’s historic
83%. 37 lots fetched six figures over the entire session,
nine more than in 2010.
● French stallion ranks have been boosted by the
acquistion of Captain Marvelous and Shakespearean in
deals brokered by Richard Venn. The former, a son of
Invincible Spirit who won the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-
Laffitte and has been at Ballyhane Stud for three seasons,
will stand at Haras des Fontaines; whilst the latter, a son
of Shamardal, who won the Gr.2 Hungerford Stakes for
Godolphin, will stand at Haras de la Hetraie.

AQUILA D’ORIENTE HEADS
BOTTI’S LISTED DOUBLE
The well bred Aquila D’Oriente (Dubawi) found an easy
target to earn her first black-type, running out the easy
winner of the Listed Criterium Aretuseo at Siracuse
yesterday. Jockey Fabio Branca gave the juvenile filly a
confident ride and Aquila D’Oriente quickened well to beat
the Sicilian-trained Ideal Coco (Orpen) by one and half
lengths, while the former British-trained Motheeba
(Mustanfar), a 2,000gns purchase from Tattersalls
Autumn Horses in Training Sale, finished third just a week
after her win in a claimer at the same course.
Aquila D’Oriente, who runs in the colours of her
breeders Stefano and Loreto Luciano, failed to reach her
reserve price (€49,000) at the SGA Selected Sale. She is a
half-sister to the dual Listed winner Figli Fanesi (Tiger
Hill), while her dam Fanofadiga (Alzao), who won six
races and was fourth in the Gr.3 Premio Mario Incisa, is a
half-sister to the International Champion and sire Falbrav
(Fairy King).
Trainer Stefano Botti and jockey Fabio Branca doubled
up later in the second Listed race on the card, the Nastro
D’Oro di Sicilia, with the favourite Douce Vie (Desert
Prince). The five-year-old entire, who also won at Listed
level in April, was settled just behind the leaders and
coasted home two lengths in front of Delrock (Rock Of
Gibraltar) and Passaggio (Exceed And Excel).
Douce Vie, a SGA Selected Sale graduate, was bred by
FLC Purosangue and provided his owners Scuderia Effevi
with its 14th Stakes win of the season. His dam
Ellendellendoo (Ela-Mana-Mou) is the dam of five other
winners and has a filly foal by Rock Of Gibraltar.

TINGLE CREEK STROLL FOR
CHAMPION SIZING EUROPE
2011 Cheltenham Festival winners took both Gr.1s in
Britain yesterday, with Sizing Europe landing the Gr.1
Tingle Creek Chase and Al Ferof (Dom Alco) victorious in
the Gr.1 King Henry VIII Chase, both at Sandown Park.
Sizing Europe made light work of his rivals for his fifth
win at the highest level, taking the lead on the long
approach to the Pond Fence before powering clear of
Kauto Star’s little brother Kauto Stone (With The Flow)
to win easily by eight lengths.
Sizing Europe has twice won at the Festival, the 2010
Gr.1 Arkle and the Gr.1 Champion Chase, and his other top
level wins have come in the the Gr.1 Champion Hurdle and
the Gr.1 With Native Novice Chase, both at
Leopardstown.
The winner’s sire Pistolet Bleu began his career in
France but moved to Coolmore’s National Hunt division,
during which time Sizing Europe was conceived.
Unfortunately, he died from colic at the age of 13, leaving
only one Irish crop.
Bred by Angela Bracken, Sizing Europe was bought as a
foal for a mere €9,000 by Hugh Bleahen at Tattersalls
Ireland November National Hunt Sale – one of three Stakes
winning graduates yesterday for that company. He is the
third foal out of the unraced Jennie Dun (Mandalus),
whose first, The Spoonplayer (Accordion), has won
four races and been Gr.3-placed for Sizing Europe’s
trainer, Henry de Bromhead. The third dam, Charlie Girl
(Vic Day), was unraced, but is the dam of Lady Aylmer
(Nice Guy; dam of the Listed-placed chasers Zelda’s
Fancy and Coursing Guy).
Al Ferof added yesterday’s win in the Gr.1 King Henry
VIII Chase to his victory in the Gr.1 Supreme Novices’
Hurdle and took his current winning streak to five since
January 2011. His likely target for next year’s Cheltenham
Festival is the Gr.1 Arkle Chase, though the Gr.2 Jewson
Novices’ Chase is another possibility.

The son of Dom Alco was always prominently placed,
taking the lead three flights from home and, though
challenged on the run in, he held on to win in a thrilling
finish by a neck.
Bred by Jacky Rauch and Gerard Chenu, he was bought
for €13,000 as a foal at the Agence Francaise Deauville
December Sale by Guy Petit and was led out unsold for
£62,000 at the 2009 Brightwells Cheltenham May Sale. He
is the third foal out of the Altayan mare Maralta, a winner
over 3000m on the flat and also the dam of the Listedplaced
hurdler Ardissone (Martaline).
The Listed handicap hurdle, the third Stakes race on
yesterday’s Sandown Park card, was won by Ubi Ace. The
five-year-old son of First Trump took the lead three flights
out and, though pressed by Via Galilei (Galileo) and Gibb
River (Mr Greeley), he battled on gamely to get the better
of his rivals on the line. This was his sixth win from 19
starts under both codes and his first at Stakes level.
Bred by Steele’s Thoroughbred Breeding and a
Tattersalls December Yearling graduate, he the seventh
foal of his dam Faithful Beauty (Last Tycoon), who is out
of a half-sister to the Champion Miler, Gr.2 (then) Lockinge
Stakes winner and sire Then Again (Jaazeiro)
The Listed Becher Chase over the Grand National
fences was won by West End Rocker, who was held up
before taking the lead three fences from home and staying
on well in the closing stages to win by a wide margin. He
jumped the famous fences well thoroughout and would
have no doubt figured more prominently in the Gr.3 Grand
National itself in April had he not been brought down at
Bechers Brook first time round, through no fault of his
own. This was his second win at Stakes level and followed
his victory in the Gr.3 Classic Chase at Warwick in January.
Bred by Ms P Kidd and both a Tattersalls Ireland and
Brightwells graduate, the nine-year-old son of Grand
Plaisir comes from the family of the dual Listed winning
hurdler Ararun (Deep Run), who was second in the Irish
Champion Hurdle, and the Listed-placed hurdler Young
Bavard (Le Bavard).
Master Of The Hall added to his victory in the Gr.2
Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase in February with victory in
the Listed Chase over an extended three miles on the
same card. The son of Saddlers’ Hall took the lead at the
third last, before powering clear to win his sixth race from
ten starts unchallenged by 16 lengths.
A Tattersalls Ireland and Brightwells graduate, he was bred
by Sweetman Bloodstock and is a full-brother to

The Stephen McKee-trained Mufhasa (Pentire) continued
his domination of New Zealand mile events when taking
this, his eighth career Gr.1 victory at up to 1600m,
dominating the field of ten to win by a length and a quarter
from Vonusti (Ustinov), with Dating (O’Reilly) a neck
back in third.
His NZ$50,000 price tag when bought out of the Karaka
ring in 2006 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale is
now looking exceedingly cheap, given he has returned
just short of NZ$3 million in stakes. His dam is the unraced
Mi Preferido mare Sheila Cheval, who has foaled four
other minor winners. Out of the Silver Dream mare Silver
Sheila, she is a half-sister to Commander Cheval, a son
of All Glory who was runner-up in the Gr.1 Avondale Cup
and won a Listed race at Matamata. With the Hong Kong
International races just around the corner, it is interesting
to note Mufhasa’s third dam Just Ours is the grandam of
Grey Invader, who took the Hong Kong Invitation Cup
when it was just a Listed event. A Gr.3 winner and multiple

Champion Princess Victoria confirmed she has no equal
amongst her contemporaries when she scored yet another
emphatic victory, her fifth on the trot. Starting at the
prohibitive odds of 1-5, Glen Kotzen’s Champion tracked
long-time leader Trinity House into the straight and,
although the Captain Al filly refused to buckle, she could
not withstand the sustained challenge mounted by the
favourite, who took the lead at the furlong mark and ran on
strongly to register her third Gr.1 victory.
Runner-up to Trinity House on her debut, Princess
Victoria has not looked back since and earned the title of
Champion Juvenile Filly, having lit up a season capped by
Gr.1 victories in the prestigious Allan Robertson
Championship and the Durban Golden Slipper.
Following a deserved rest, she returned to action early
last month and picked up right where she left off, running

EBN Sunday, 4th December 2011 NATIONAL HUNT STAKES RESULTS
Alco) joined the leader Lancetto (Dubai Destination) at
the ninth. He took up the running three flights from home
and, though hard pressed on the flat after the last, he held
on to win narrowly from For Non Stop (Alderbrook)
This was his second win at Gr.1 level, following his
victory in the Gr.1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the
Cheltenham Festival March and his fourth at Graded level.
It was also his fifth consecutive win and he remains
unbeaten since January.
He is a half-brother to the Listed Prix Francois de
Poncins Hurdle-third Ardissone (Martaline) and is the
third foal out of the Altayan mare Maralta, a winner over
3000m on the flat. Her dam Marowa (Rex Magna) won
four times on the flat, before producing three other
winners, including the nine times scorer Loroco (Amen).
The third dam, La Romantique (Carmarthen) won twice
and foaled three winners, though the next nearest blacktype
in the family is with the Stakes-winning flat runners
Kirkes and Pruneau, who were produced by the winner’s
fifth dam.

Martine’s Spirit (Invincible Spirit) took the lead over two
furlongs out and, though edging right in the closing
stages, won easily on her fifth start. She is a half-sister to
the dual Listed winner My Renee (Kris S; dam of the dual
Gr.2 winner and dual Gr.1-placed Banimpire, who was
sold for 2,300,000gns at Goffs November Sale last month),
and is the seventh foal of her dam Mayenne (Nureyev).
She was unraced but is a half-sister to the dual Gr.1
winner and sire Carnegie (Sadler’s Wells), the ill-fated
Gr.2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano winner Antisaar (Northern
Dancer), the Gr.3 St Simon Stakes winner Lake Erie
(Kings Lake) and the Listed Prix Michel Houyvet winner
Honfleur (Sadler’s Wells), as well as the triple Gr.3 winner
and sire Wayne County (Sadler’s Wells). Their dam
Detroit (Riverman) was the Champion Three-Year-Old
Filly in Europe in 1980.
Mayenne has a yearling filly by Marju (€260,000gns

The light weight Saetta Star (Danroad) set a decent pace
and scored easily on his first attempt in handicap
company. His dam Classic Silili (Be My Guest) has had
just one moderate winner from four previous foals. The
second dam Yes Please (Mount Hagen) recorded two
wins and had three winners from nine foals. One of them,
Assertion (Assert) landed a maiden in June at The
Curragh and was third 14 days after in the Gr.1 Irish Oaks.
Moved to Japan, she proved herself a classy broodmare,
foaling the Gr.3 winner Promotion (Hector Protector),
who subsequently foaled Admire Main (Sunday
Silence), a winner at Gr.2 level, second in the Japanese
Derby and now a sire in South Africa. Another of
Promotion’s winning daughters, J’S Jewelry (Real
Shadai) became a top broodmare, producing Admire
Jupiter (French Deputy), winner of the Gr.1 Tenno Sho
Spring.

Gr.3 Premio Omenoni for the late Armando Renzoni and
scored at Listed level when moved to Dermot Weld’s yard
in Ireland. He now stands at a fee of €2,500 at Sweep
Lane Stud and his first foals are expected in 2012. Their
dam Rinass (Indian Rdge) also foaled the three-year-old
filly Pocket A Pound (Azamour), who was Listed-placed
this season. The second dam Smageta (High Top) won

Quest), dam of Rakti (Polish Precedent), who won no
less than six Gr.1s from 1600 to 2400m before retiring to
stud.

the dam of Phantom Gold (Machiavellian), who also
landed the Ribblesdale for The Queen and became a very
good broodmare, foaling Flight Of Fancy (Sadler’s
Wells), runner-up in the 2001 Gr.1 Oaks. Expansive is a
full-sister to Example, who won the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes
