finished second in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille on two
occasions and third in the Gr.1 Prix de Diane, as well as
the Gr.2 Prix de Royallieu winner Balladeuse (Singspiel).
Their dam Featherquest (Rainbow Quest) also has a
two-year-old filly, named Secrete (Cape Cross), who is in
training with Andre Fabre but has yet to race in the famous
blue and white Wertheimer colours.
Le Havre had his first foal offered at auction and Mags
O’Toole paid €52,000 for Lot 129, a colt out of Seracina
(Nashwan) and consigned by Haras de la Louviere. The
underbidder for the foal was Sylvain Vidal on behalf of
Gerard Augustin Normand, whose colours Le Havre
carried to victory in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club and who
now stands the five-year-old stallion at his farm, Haras de
la Cauviniere. O’Toole later confirmed that the foal will be
offered for re-sale as a yearling at Arqana next year. She
was also responsible for purchasing the top priced foal of
the day, Lot 183, a colt by Montjeu, for €145,000 from
Haras des Capucines, whose close relatives include the
Gr.1 winners Verveine, Volga, Vallee Enchantee,
Vespone, Maids Causeway et al. Demand for the
Coolmore sire was such that he also had the second
highest priced foal, Lot 143, another son, who was sold
privately for €140,000. Consigned by Haras d’Etreham, he
comes from the family of the Gr.1 Irish St Leger and Gr.1
Preis von Europa winner Jukebox Jury, yet another son
of Montjeu.
A few minutes from the final fall of Bernard de Reviers’s
hammer, bidding soared to €310,000 for the Gr.1 Poule
d’Essai des Pouliches runner-up Baine (Lot 227), offered
out of training by Haras du Berlais. The beautiful filly
boasts an intriguing pedigree, being by Country Reel and
from the maternal family of the same sire. She went the
way of Patricia Boutin (Suprina), following a fierce battle
with Northern Farm.
Day One returned a set of figures largely up from last
year’s, which had already been judged extremely
satisfactory. The turnover was €11,882,000 (including
private sales), up 5.2% from 2010, while the average price
rose 18.7% to reach a record €74,044. 148 of the 210
fillies, mares and foals on offer changed hands, 70.5%, the
only indicator that could not match last year’s historic
83%. 37 lots fetched six figures over the entire session,
nine more than in 2010.
● French stallion ranks have been boosted by the
acquistion of Captain Marvelous and Shakespearean in
deals brokered by Richard Venn. The former, a son of
Invincible Spirit who won the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-
Laffitte and has been at Ballyhane Stud for three seasons,
will stand at Haras des Fontaines; whilst the latter, a son
of Shamardal, who won the Gr.2 Hungerford Stakes for
Godolphin, will stand at Haras de la Hetraie.
