EBN Sunday, 4th December 2011 RACING REVIEW • NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEW Racing Review ITALY AQUILA D’ORIENTE HEADS BOTTI’S LISTED DOUBLE The well bred Aquila D’Oriente (Dubawi) found an easy target to earn her first black-type, running out the easy winner of the Listed Criterium Aretuseo at Siracuse yesterday. Jockey Fabio Branca gave the juvenile filly a confident ride and Aquila D’Oriente quickened well to beat the Sicilian-trained Ideal Coco (Orpen) by one and half lengths, while the former British-trained Motheeba (Mustanfar), a 2,000gns purchase from Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, finished third just a week after her win in a claimer at the same course. Aquila D’Oriente, who runs in the colours of her breeders Stefano and Loreto Luciano, failed to reach her reserve price (€49,000) at the SGA Selected Sale. She is a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Figli Fanesi (Tiger Hill), while her dam Fanofadiga (Alzao), who won six races and was fourth in the Gr.3 Premio Mario Incisa, is a half-sister to the International Champion and sire Falbrav (Fairy King). Trainer Stefano Botti and jockey Fabio Branca doubled up later in the second Listed race on the card, the Nastro D’Oro di Sicilia, with the favourite Douce Vie (Desert Prince). The five-year-old entire, who also won at Listed level in April, was settled just behind the leaders and coasted home two lengths in front of Delrock (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Passaggio (Exceed And Excel). Douce Vie, a SGA Selected Sale graduate, was bred by FLC Purosangue and provided his owners Scuderia Effevi with its 14th Stakes win of the season. E-mail: ebn@dial.pipex.com 6 National Hunt Racing Review BRITAIN TINGLE CREEK STROLL FOR CHAMPION SIZING EUROPE 2011 Cheltenham Festival winners took both Gr.1s in Britain yesterday, with Sizing Europe landing the Gr.1 Tingle Creek Chase and Al Ferof (Dom Alco) victorious in the Gr.1 King Henry VIII Chase, both at Sandown Park. Sizing Europe made light work of his rivals for his fifth win at the highest level, taking the lead on the long approach to the Pond Fence before powering clear of Kauto Star’s little brother Kauto Stone (With The Flow) to win easily by eight lengths. Sizing Europe has twice won at the Festival, the 2010 Gr.1 Arkle and the Gr.1 Champion Chase, and his other top level wins have come in the the Gr.1 Champion Hurdle and the Gr.1 With Native Novice Chase, both at Leopardstown. The winner’s sire Pistolet Bleu began his career in France but moved to Coolmore’s National Hunt division, during which time Sizing Europe was conceived. Unfortunately, he died from colic at the age of 13, leaving only one Irish crop. Bred by Angela Bracken, Sizing Europe was bought as a foal for a mere €9,000 by Hugh Bleahen at Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale – one of three Stakes winning graduates yesterday for that company. He is the third foal out of the unraced Jennie Dun (Mandalus), whose first, The Spoonplayer (Accordion), has won four races and been Gr.3-placed for Sizing Europe’s trainer, Henry de Bromhead. The third dam, Charlie Girl (Vic Day), was unraced, but is the dam of Lady Aylmer (Nice Guy; dam of the Listed-placed chasers Zelda’s Fancy and Coursing Guy). Al Ferof added yesterday’s win in the Gr.1 King Henry VIII Chase to his victory in the Gr.1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and took his current winning streak to five since January 2011. His likely target for next year’s Cheltenham Festival is the Gr.1 Arkle Chase, though the Gr.2 Jewson Novices’ Chase is another possibility. EBN Sunday, 4th December 2011 NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEW The son of Dom Alco was always prominently placed, taking the lead three flights from home and, though challenged on the run in, he held on to win in a thrilling finish by a neck. Bred by Jacky Rauch and Gerard Chenu, he was bought for €13,000 as a foal at the Agence Francaise Deauville December Sale by Guy Petit and was led out unsold for £62,000 at the 2009 Brightwells Cheltenham May Sale. He is the third foal out of the Altayan mare Maralta, a winner over 3000m on the flat and also the dam of the Listedplaced hurdler Ardissone (Martaline). The Listed handicap hurdle, the third Stakes race on yesterday’s Sandown Park card, was won by Ubi Ace. The five-year-old son of First Trump took the lead three flights out and, though pressed by Via Galilei (Galileo) and Gibb River (Mr Greeley), he battled on gamely to get the better of his rivals on the line. This was his sixth win from 19 starts under both codes and his first at Stakes level. Bred by Steele’s Thoroughbred Breeding and a Tattersalls December Yearling graduate, he the seventh foal of his dam Faithful Beauty (Last Tycoon), who is out of a half-sister to the Champion Miler, Gr.2 (then) Lockinge Stakes winner and sire Then Again (Jaazeiro) The Listed Becher Chase over the Grand National fences was won by West End Rocker, who was held up before taking the lead three fences from home and staying on well in the closing stages to win by a wide margin. He jumped the famous fences well thoroughout and would have no doubt figured more prominently in the Gr.3 Grand National itself in April had he not been brought down at Bechers Brook first time round, through no fault of his own. This was his second win at Stakes level and followed his victory in the Gr.3 Classic Chase at Warwick in January. Bred by Ms P Kidd and both a Tattersalls Ireland and Brightwells graduate, the nine-year-old son of Grand Plaisir comes from the family of the dual Listed winning hurdler Ararun (Deep Run), who was second in the Irish Champion Hurdle, and the Listed-placed hurdler Young Bavard (Le Bavard). Master Of The Hall added to his victory in the Gr.2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase in February with victory in the Listed Chase over an extended three miles on the same card. The son of Saddlers’ Hall took the lead at the third last, before powering clear to win his sixth race from ten starts unchallenged by 16 lengths. A Tattersalls Ireland and Brightwells graduate, he was bred by Sweetman Bloodstock and is a full-brother to Featherbed Lane, who won an earlier race on the same card, and is out of a half-sister to the Gr.1 Tingle Creek Chase winner Sound Man (Kemal), from the family of the Gr.2 winning hurdler/chaser Roberto Goldback (Bob Back). FRANCE Hillbilly, who was third in the 2010 Listed Prix Triquerville, claimed his first win at Stakes level when taking the Listed Grand Steeplechase de Bordeaux-Prix de Sauternes at Bordeaux-le-Bouscat yesterday to lead home a 1-2-3 for trainer Guillaume Macaire. The five-year-old son of Kapgarde kept on well to win by two and a half lengths for his fourth win from 20 starts.
