young sire Le Havre (Noverre), for €240,000. “We were
particularly interested in her, as her dam, Marie
Rheinberg [Surako], has a magnificent foal by Sea The
Stars and, of course, due to her being a half-sister to a
horse like Le Havre. All three mares will now go to Gilltown
Stud, where they will be covered by Sea The Stars in the
future. Mrs Tsui and her son Christopher were very keen to
acquire some mares here, as we were unlucky in
Newmarket [at Tattersalls] and supporting Sea The Stars
is very important to both of them after all the pleasure he
has provided in recent times.”
Tatsuya Yoshida, sitting alongside Patrick Barbe, was
also very prominent, notching up two of the top five lots
on behalf of Shadai Farms. They outbid Australia’s Paul
Makin to purchase Lot 172, the seven-year-old May
Kiersey (Sadler’s Wells), whose Danehill Dancer filly
foal was bought by Peter Doyle Bloodstock for
155,000gns at the recent Tattersalls December Foal Sale.
May Kiersey, who was consigned by Haras d’Etreham and
is in foal to Fastnet Rock, is a full-sister to the dual Gr.3
winner and Gr.1 Prix de Diana-second Gagnoa and a halfsister
to the Gr.1 Derby winner and new Coolmore sire
Pour Moi (Montjeu), was bought for €400,000. They also
snapped up the four-year-old filly Lot 185, Evading
Tempete (Dubai Destination), who was consigned by
Haras des Capucines, for €360,000. Yoshida explained
afterwards, “They will both go to Japan but no decision
has yet been made as to which stallion they will be
covered by. They are both good looking mares with very
nice pedigrees, so obviously we were interested in them.”
Patrick Barbe added “May Kiersey was the horse of the

sale for us and we were worried that we wouldn’t get her
for a minute there! Evading Tempete has the interesting
characteristic in that she has won in France and Italy [Gr.3
Premio Regina Elena] and been placed in France [second
in the Gr.3 Prix Imprudence], England, North America and
Turkey. I think that she will make a very nice broodmare.”
Another mare destined for Japan is the five-year-old
mare Lot 164, Samaaha (Singspiel), after she was
purchased by Katsumi Yoshida from the Haras du
Mezeray draft for €280,000. “She will join our purchases
from Tattersalls for exportation to Japan in the near future.
We have not yet decided on a stallion for her but her
pedigree will work with all of our stallions. I think we paid
a fair price for her considering she is carrying her first foal
by Dubawi, who is a very hot sire at the moment.”
Samaaha is out of the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont winner
Genovefa (Woodman), who also foaled Mamool (In The
Wings), winner of the Gr.1 Grosser Preis Von Baden, the
Gr.1 Preis Von Europa and the Gr.2 Yorkshire Cup and now
standing at Gestut Romerhof in Germany.
Just a few lots earlier, Paul Fudge of Waratah
Thoroughbreds went to €350,000 to acquire Lot 161,
Insoumise (Galileo), a three-year-old filly who was
consigned by the Wertheimer Brothers and comes from
the family of Groom Dancer, Falco, Vert Amande, Le
Nain Jaune, as well as the 2011 Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe winner Danedream. “She is a lovely individual
from a good family and is a half-sister to some very nice
horses. She will fit very nicely into our breeding
programme.” Insoumise is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Grand
Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Plumania (Anabaa), who also
read the figures!
