League Reaffirmation - Johnson County Community College

Debate team
In fall 2007, JCCC’s debate team placed in the top six at
four of the five tournaments they attended. In the recent
fall rankings by the Cross­Examination Debate
Association, JCCC was the highest­ranking competitive
community college, ranked 34 out of 138 schools,
including four­year institutions. JCCC earned a finalist
award at the Baylor University Tournament this fall. There
the team of Zac Hartkopp and Brad Jacobs went
undefeated in prelimination rounds with a record of 7­0,
which earned them top­seed honors. The team proceeded
to win their semifinal round on a 3­0 decision, earn a
spot in the finals, and come home with a second­place
finish. Terri Easley, assistant professor, speech, is the
team’s adviser.
During the 2006­2007 year, the JCCC debate team
travelled and competed at 11 tournaments and won
awards or placed at all of those.
“It is quite the accomplishment for a
community college to be ranked so high
compared to four­year institutions. Since
there is not a separate division for
community colleges, JCCC’s debate team is
constantly competing against universities
across the country. The students’ consistent
competitive success in the fall has placed
them higher than schools such as Michigan,
Johns Hopkins and Georgetown.”
