Don Rosenberg/SCW photos Community Finding Common Grounds Providence Road farm stand donates $25,000 to Urban Ministry Center by Don Rosenberg news@thecharlotteweekly.com If you were driving past the intersection of Providence and Queens roads this summer, you might’ve noticed something going on next to Interiors Marketplace and Myers Park Garden Center on Tuesdays and Fridays around noon. Many saw an old-fashioned red truck and a bunch of women in white T-shirts, standing around with bushels of veggies and colorful fresh flowers. This was the Common Grounds Farm Stand, organized by Sarah Belk and Paige Waugh to raise money for the Urban Ministry Center. Common Grounds founders and volunteers with their first season’s donation of $25,000 to Urban Ministry Center for the homeless. Common Grounds recently completed its inaugural season and was able to raise $25,000 for the center. Of that amount, $20,000 has been earmarked for two apartments in Moore Place, slated to break ground in the fall of 2010. Urban Ministry Garden Director Don Boekelheide said, “In these difficult economic times the demands for our services are greater, while our corporate funding is becoming more scarce. This money is especially welcome!” The market, 923 Providence Road, started May 25 and ran until Sept. 25. The volunteers, called “Mustard Seeds,” ranged in age from 7 to over 60, and sold fresh, local and organic produce, freshcut flowers and a wide variety of locally generated products including baked goods and organic soaps. Common Grounds’ final event is a “BIG CORNUCOPIA” on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its regular location. They’ll have a wide variety of baked goods and produce plus soups, stews, casseroles and sauces so people can stock up for the holidays. The stand will reopen in the spring at the same location. The group needs volunteers and donations for its continuing efforts to provide grassroots support to the Charlotte homeless community. “We would love extra Common Grounds Farm Stand began operating at 923 Providence Road in May. We had to do a lot of running around to get produce this past summer,” Sarah Belk said. “Ideally, we would love to have a community garden supported by someone or some group who would like to work with some of our homeless neighbors who are on the road to a positive life change.
