Dance-A-Thon
honors a teacher’s
brave fight
by Sean O’Connell
sean@thecharlotteweekly.com
Joanna Nichols’ dance students may
remember their instructor’s mantra:
“Go for it! Life is not a
dress rehearsal.”
It’s fitting, then, that
next week the proverbial
curtain will open on
Dance for the Cause’s first
annual Dance-A-Thon
held in Nichols’ honor.
The longtime south Charlotte
dance instructor
passed away on Dec. 10
from her fight with colon
cancer. All of the money
raised from the event,
scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8, will go
to the American Cancer Society, earmarked
for colon cancer research.
Nichols taught dance in the area for
more than 30 years. She started her
teaching career at the Belmont Recreation
Department before opening her
own studio – Dance Specialties – on
Catawba Street in Belmont. She was a
member of the Greensboro Civic Ballet
and certified by Dance Masters of
America and Carolina Dance Masters.
She most recently taught
at Dreamweavers Studio
in Forest City, and had a
longstanding professional
relationship with Jami
Masters, who teaches
dance in the SouthPark
neighborhood.
Masters’ school, located
behind the Park Road
Shopping Center, will
host one of three Dance-
A-Thon events on Nov. 8,
from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The
Dance-A-Thon is a dance workout
that any healthy person can do. It’s an
aerobic exercise, but is geared toward
any skill level. To participate, arrive at
Jami Masters’ studio beginning at 1:30
p.m. The facility is located at 1425
Queens Road West, Charlotte. q
