Homegrown talent plays key role in Charlotte Country Day’s success by Aaron Garcia aaron@thecharlotteweekly.com By 2005, Charlotte Country Day football coach Bob Witman had grown tired of opposing coaches “complimenting” him for his recruiting efforts. Recruiting, the rival coaches figured, must’ve been the reason the Bucs were able to win state championships and even step outside the private-school ranks to knock off highly regarded public schools. So Witman found a way to volley the backhanded compliments. In the Charlotte Country Day game programs, along with categories such as “grade” and “position,” Witman began adding one more column: “Years at CCDS.” “We had some good athletes here,” said Witman. “(Opponents) thought, ‘Heavens, why would they be going to school there?’” As the Bucs enter their Friday, Oct. 30, regular-season finale against rival Charlotte Latin, the “Years at CCDS” column in the game programs goes a long way toward explaining how Charlotte Country Day (9-0) has emerged as one of the county’s three unbeaten teams this season. An exclusive club For Witman, listing the players’ time at Charlotte Country Day was the perfect answer to critics who thought they’d just lost to a group of private-school mercenaries. That myth was quickly debunked when the number matched that of the players’ grade levels. In private-school circles, these students are commonly referred to as “lifers.” Each year, a few Charlotte Country Day upperclassmen stick out for having spent their entire careers at the school. But the number is even more impressive this year, as 18 of the team’s 37 players have spent 12 years at the school. Eleven of those players are seniors. (Charlotte Country Day also offers a junior kindergarten program.) Another four players – two sophomores and two juniors – have spent 11 years at the school. “I was amazed at how many lifers there were on the team,” said Witman. “Sure, we have a couple of kids who came as freshmen. But for the most part, these kids have been here since elementary school, which makes it special. This is our team.” The players are grateful for their unique bond. “I don’t think there’s another group (of players in the city who’ve) been together as long as we have,” said (more on page 28) Austin Powers Hawks Shagging touchdowns in nine consecutive games, Latin receiver living a dream by C. Jemal Horton jemal@thecharlotteweekly.com As a lower-school student romping through Charlotte Latin School’s wooded setting in the late 1990s, Davis Austin always kept an eye on the Hawks’ football field. Even then, Austin towered over many of his classmates and appeared to have a stature more conducive to excelling for the Charlotte Latin basketball team one day. Basketball, in fact, had been his first sports love. But over the years, as he grew taller, and the Hawks’ football squad began a magnificent ascent to one of the state’s elite private-school teams, Austin found it increasingly difficult to ignore the whispers calling from the gridiron. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Austin is one of Mecklenburg County’s top wide receivers, having hauled in 35 passes for 772 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. His sparkling statistics have prompted college coaches from the Ivy League, Southern Conference and, most recently, the Atlantic Coast Conference to come calling. The individual attention has been rewarding for Austin, who put in a lot of sweat equity over the summer to attain his current level of play.
