Happenings 2 March/April 2009

Dear Sisterhood,
So Many Laws, So Little Time
In a recent week’s parsha, it discusses the many
laws that we have. Some of these laws have to do
with how one should treat one’s enemies.
As with most of our laws, it is like a good book of
etiquette. Miss Manners would tell you etiquette
is made to make people feel comfortable. In the
case of your enemies and our laws, these laws
exist to make us trust one another. In the longer
haul, these laws not only give us comfort and
trust. They also can give us caring and friendship.
Have you ever helped out someone whom you
did not know or maybe didn’t care for? Did your
feelings for them change after that experience?
Has someone you did not like reached out a
helping hand to you? Have you ever been touched
by a random act of kindness?
Reaching out to our enemies can turn them into
our friends. Treating your fellow man with dignity
no matter how you feel about them will not only
change the way they feel about you but the way
you feel about them. I believe this is the purpose
of our laws for how to treat our enemies whether
it is to return a donkey or a cell phone.
As Jackie Deshannon and Randy Meyers said in
the song:
“Think of your fellow man give them a helping
hand put a little love in your heart, and the world
will be a better place for you and me just wait and
see.”
Shalom to you all,
Lauren Milana
President
President’s Message
From the Board
February 5, 2009
The Board meeting was opened by our
President, Lauren Milana, at 9:25 a.m. She read
our inspirational moment, which was sent to
her by Cathleen Sugarman, our Chaplain.
We started our morning with a discussion
on the planned trip to Washington for our
Confirmation Students. There is a request from
our Rabbi David for monetary support. We will
take all things into consideration.
We then discussed a future Shabbaton
Sisterhood Celebration. It will be a lovely
addition to our Sisterhood projects. There
will be interaction between the many other
Sisterhoods of Conservative and Orthodox
and Reform Judaism denominations—it’ll be
educational, with classes focused on Jewish
practices. It sounds like a very exciting project
for the coming year.
On February 20, we will have our Sisterhood
Shabbat Service. A beautiful Friday night service
to be sure. Our participants feel honored to
be part of this lovely evening. Carol Gendel
has worked very hard as coordinator of this
important event.
We are looking forward to our book program,
chaired by Maud Pincus. The book, People of
the Book, by Geraldine Brooks, is our feature for
the program which is called What if Everyone
in Sisterhood Read the Same Book? Phyllis
Mehlman is proposing a Game Day for 4/23.
brown bag or box luncheon.
Our Treasurer’s Report by Florence Krantz
was complete as always. Thank you, Florence.
Beverly reported that Richard Degelsmith will be
the new Youth Coordinator of all of the youth
groups of our congregation. The Youth Group
Shabbat Dinner was a success, and a big thank
you goes to Larry and Janet Pollack, who cooked
all the delicious food for our hungry teens.
Janet reported that our Gift Shop will have many
new beautiful Passover items in stock for the
holiday—all reasonably priced.
Respectfully submitted,
Freda Heller, Friendship Chair
