Happenings 2 September-October 2010

Dear Sisterhood Members,
As your Co-Presidents for Temple Adat
Shalom Sisterhood, Lisa and I thank
you for trusting us to lead you for the
next two years. You now have your own
“Laverne and Shirley”—not kidding—
we are like that!
We want to thank the stewardship of
Lauren Milana, and all she has done
for the Sisterhood. She has shown
incredible passion and commitment.
We look forward to her direction and
mentorship.
We also want to thank the other ladies
of leadership, the past presidents of
Sisterhood who have so generously
volunteered their time to mentor
us—specifically Janet Pollack, Lorraine
Thall, Barbara Birenbaum, Peggy Locke,
and Cathleen Sugarman.
You may not know us, or know us well,
so I want to share a little bit about our
backgrounds that have led us to the
occasion of our installation today.
Lisa has a long history of involvement
in temple and leadership. She was
born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona,
and moved here 21 years ago with her
husband, Mark. She grew up with an
example of Sisterhood leadership in
her mother, who served many years as
sisterhood president in their temple
in Phoenix, and was involved in their
local chapter of Hadassah. Lisa and
Mark joined Adat Shalom some 10
years ago when they enrolled their
children in Ganon Gil. She also was
the first president of the Hadassah
Chapter of Professional Women. A
few years ago, her family joined the
“Yummy Havurah” (named for our love
of the Yummy sushi restaurant where
the ladies like to meet for planning
sessions). Lisa and I met through the
Havurah, and with the arm-twisting of
Barbara Birenbaum, we both became
active in Sisterhood. Lisa has held some
leadership roles in the past few years and
feels ready to take on the responsibility
Presidents’ Message
of the “big job”.
I grew up here in San Diego, and am
a product of Temple Emanu-El (that
was before they had a building, and
the temple still rented out Rolando
Methodist Church). I was president
of my youth group, and attended the
Youth Leadership session at Camp Swig.
I was very active in SCFTY throughout
my high school years, I taught religious
school at Beth Israel and Temple
Emanu-El, and worked as a Secretary at
the Bureau of Jewish Education while in
college at SDSU. After college, I moved
to the Los Angeles area where I was
involved in various Jewish groups and
organizations (primarily to find a Jewish
husband, well that didn’t work out—but
still—all good!) I married in ‘95, had
my daughter Gabby in 1996— she
attended the Jewish Community Center
pre-school in Santa Monica where I was
on the Board of Directors. We moved to
San Diego nine years ago, joined Adat
Shalom, and I enrolled my daughter
in Mosad Shalom. After divorcing, I
wanted to connect more to the Jewish
community, so after meeting Barbara
Birenbaum through our mutual love
of Israeli dancing, I joined the Yummy
Havurah. I made a good friend in Lisa
through the Havurah, and one thing
led to another.
We are still working on our vision, but
certainly that includes there being a
place for all women in Sisterhood—
the young, the old, the moms, and
grandmoms. It should be a place that
welcomes all, and a place where you find
friendship and support. With your help,
we hope to make it a place where you
will feel connected and supported. We
look forward to your suggestions and
wisdom, your spirit, your hard work
and your commitment. Feel assured that
Lisa and I want to hear from you and
will work to make this your sisterhood.
Sisterhood does so much for our temple
family through our commitment to
youth, our commitment to community,
our commitment to social action and
our commitment to each other. In our
temple, there are needs and concerns
that may never had been focused on if
we-as women-did not undertake them.
The need for sisterhood is great.
In our personal and daily lives, there
are moments and relationships that can
be lost in the daily blur of activity if
we, as women, do not recognize them,
value them, and encourage them. We
know that sisterhood creates bonds that
last a lifetime. We know how women
laugh together, and share tears as well.
We gather to tell our stories. We break
bread and chocolate together. We go to
homeless shelters together. We are part
of sisterhood to heal the world and heal
each other.
Women turn to sisterhood for
camaraderie and fun. We understand
that relationships are key. Today we
need each other more than ever. We
need community because living in
isolation in an imperfect world is just
way too hard. Our collective power, the
power of women together, the power of
sisterhood, is unstoppable.
Please join with Lisa and myself—we
want you, we need you, we love you—
in sisterhood.
With gratitude we thank you for this
great privilege to serve you.
B’Shalom,
What is the WRJ?
The WRJ (Women of Reform Judaism) is the women’s affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism, the central body of Reform
Judaism in North America. Established in 1913, WRJ now represents more than 65,000 women in over 500 women’s groups
in North America and around the world.
With a mission to ensure the future of Reform Judaism, WRJ works to educate and train future sisterhood and
congregational leadership about membership, fundraising, leadership skills, advocacy for social justice, and innovative and
spiritual programming. Through our YES Fund (Youth, Education, and Special Projects), WRJ provides financial support to
rabbinical students at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, to the youth programs of the Reform Movement,
and to programs benefiting women and children in Israel and the former Soviet Union.
A DAT SHALOM
Thanks to Some Special Members
Poway Interfaith Nights a Success
TAS Sisterhood is very proud to have
had representation from our membership
this summer for two of the programs
from the Poway Interfaith Team
which were very well attended. On July
29, we had Barbara Birenbaum and her
group of Israeli dancers doing many Israeli
dances for the Cultural Night held
at the Poway Community Church. For
the last two dances Barbara had audience
participation and over 65 people
got up to join in and enjoyed learning
the beautiful Israeli dances. It was truly
a labor of love and we thank Barbara for
bringing this cultural program to the
entire community.
Then on August 19, we had Jacob Teal,
son of Angelica and Marty Teal, as a
Youth Panel representative from TAS
participating with a panel of 12 teens in
a very well-attended session on “Spirituality
vs. Wealth”. Angelica, we were
all very proud of your son Jacob, who
will be entering UC Santa Cruz soon,
and his representation of our Temple.
He and the others on the Teen Panel
brought so much thought and wisdom
to the program.
The Power of Partnership: WRJ and Abraham Geiger College
By Walter Homolka, Rector, Abraham Geiger College
In 1942, the Nazis closed the "Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums"
in Berlin. It was the end of an era that had begun in 1836 with
Abraham Geiger's call for the founding of a Jewish theological department
at a German university. In 1870 Abraham Geiger had moved from Frankfurt
to Berlin to become one of the founders of the first liberal rabbinical
seminary. He taught there until his death in 1874. Later, Regina Jonas
studied at the "Hochschule" in Berlin to become the first liberal woman
rabbi ever in 1935.
In Reform Judaism, women's lib had started with Abraham Geiger, a fervent advocate of co-education of girls and
boys. Since 1837 Geiger had pushed for women's inclusion into the service and the introduction of confirmation
predominantly to assure a celebration of the coming of age of Jewish youngsters in the spirit of equality. He
himself could marry his wife Emily Oppenheim only in 1840 after an engagement period of almost seven years.
The Frankfurt municipality at the time permitted two Jewish marriages per year only. It was in this situation of
predicament that Geiger formulated his vision of equality and reform.
