Dear Friends,
As you all know, the High Holy
Days are fast approaching. I am looking
forward to celebrating with you, and to
using this time that we spend together to
engage in reflection and contemplation,
personal and communal growth. This
year, thanks to a very generous anonymous donation we
will also have the opportunity to welcome a new voice
to our bimah, a rabbinic intern from Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles.
Student Rabbi Karen Sherman is in her fourth year of
studies at HUC. She grew up in Orange County, where
she lives now with her husband Harvey and their two
young daughters. Karen has served as Student Rabbi at
Congregation Etz Chaim in Merced, California and at
Congregation B’nai Israel in Kokomo, Indiana. Prior
to embarking upon this second career as a rabbi, she
earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Ecology from
UC Irvine and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from
USC. She worked as Director of Children’s Programs
at a Los Angeles-based substance abuse treatment center
for women, and she was a consultant to substance abuse
and child welfare organizations working toward more
integrated services for children and families across
California.
Student Rabbi Sherman will be assisting me in
leading our services during both Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur, and will be offering several sermons. Not
only will her presence benefit us, and significantly enrich
our holidays, but we as a congregation will be enriching
Judaism by providing a powerful educational moment
for one of the future leaders of the Jewish community.
President’s Message
Steve Wismar
Photo
Dear Friends -
Shana Tovah! On Rosh Hashanah
we begin a truly historic year in the
life of our Congregation. In this New
Year, we will complete and dedicate
our new Sanctuary, select and install
our new permanent Rabbi, attend
and help to host the URJ Biennial Convention in
San Diego and celebrate Cantor Frank’s twentyfive
years of extraordinary service to Temple Adat
Shalom…and much of this in the first six months
alone! In short, this promises to be a memorable
year marked by significant milestones, continuing
challenges and exciting new possibilities.
We also begin the new year delighted by the addition
of two new members to our Temple staff; Ganon
Gil Director Marilyn Milne, and Facilities Manager
Patrick Kiernan. Both Marilyn and Patrick come to
us with exceptional experience and dedication to their
respective missions, and we are indeed fortunate to
have them with us. Please take the opportunity to
welcome them both to the TAS community.
As we move into October, I want to let each of you
know about two important dates, the first relating to
Cantor Frank and the second relating to the rapidly
approaching URJ Biennial.
Dedicated and stoic as she may be, some of you
may have nonetheless noticed that Cantor Frank has
been walking with considerable pain for some time.
In order to hopefully rectify this situation, Cantor
Frank will be undergoing hip replacement surgery
on October 24th. I know the entire TAS community
joins with me in wishing Cantor refuah sh’lemah
- a complete and rapid recovery. Cantor hopes to
be able to return to work approximately six weeks
after surgery, and requests that any visits to her
home as she convalesces be proceeded by a phone
call. During Cantor’s absence, all B’nai Mitzvah
services will be covered by Cantorial Soloist Ava
Liss, who is well known to our Congregation from
her beautiful assistance at past High Holiday services.
An enormous thank you to Janet Pollack and Dennis
Masur who have generously agreed to provide lay
cantorial coverage at other times.
Last, but certainly not least, I want to remind everyone
that the Deadline for completing cost saving Early-
Bird URJ Biennial registration is October 29th. Just
go to www.urj.org/biennial to quickly complete
the registration process. For even greater savings,
consider serving as a Biennial Volunteer which entitles
you to one-day free admission to the Convention
and Exhibit Hall. Either way, do not miss this
extraordinary opportunity to join with 5,000 Reform
Jews from 900 Congregations across North America
as we worship, learn, connect and celebrate together
over six amazing days from Dec. 12 - Dec. 16 at the
San Diego Convention Center. Featured speakers
include former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
and nationally prominent attorney Barry Scheck from
the Innocence Project. Each day brings a choice of
twenty-five creative workshops on topics ranging
from “Keeping Our Kids Connected” to “Jewish
Art and Music”, “Understanding the Middle East”,
“Creating Vibrant Worship Experiences”, “Building
Healthy Congregations” and too many more to
mention. Evenings bring wonderful Jewish music and
entertainment opportunities as well as the chance to
meet up with old friends and connect with new ones.
The Exhibit Hall is simply amazing. The experience
of worshiping on Shabbat with 5,000 Reform Jews
in one place is truly awe inspiring and for many the
highlight of the Convention. If you have not attended
previous URJ Biennials because the time and expense
of traveling across the country to do so seemed
prohibitive, that concern is now gone. The Biennial
is a mere 30 minutes away. How unfortunate if we
were to miss this incredible opportunity when it lay
so close to our doorstep.
I wish you each a sweet and fulfilling New Year
Steve Wismar
President
Rabbi Continued from page 1
Rabbi Reuven Hammer, in his book “Entering the
High Holy Days,” recalls his childhood experiences
of synagogue and says, “I came to recognize the
importance of being part of a Jewish community, of
our existence. That is what this season is all about:
together we celebrate the fact that God has given us
the opportunity to live and to experience this world.
We celebrate a festival of life.” May we all find joy,
warmth, and spiritual connection as we celebrate this
festival of life together at Temple Adat Shalom.
Elizabeth, Aviel, and Coby join me in wishing each
of you a shanah tovah u’metukah, a good and sweet
New Year.
High Holy Day Prayer Books
It is customary that our members bring their own
prayer books to High Holyday services. It is
necessary that each congregant have his or
her own book. If you do not have Avot v’Imahot
prayer book stickers in your prayer books, you may
pick them up at the Temple office. You may purchase
Gates of Repentance in advance at the Temple office
for a cost of $20 each.
In our use of The Gates of Repentance during our
TAS High Holyday worship, you may have observed
variations in the text. While the 1978 edition of the
book provides compatible pagination, the more recent
publication of 1996 contains text changes in addition
to its gender sensitive features. Please understand
that there is nothing we can do about this as the
Central Conference of American Rabbis, publisher of
our High Holy Day machzor (prayer book), currently
only makes the 1996 edition available. You will
be hearing these changes from the bimah as well
since our pulpit copies will have to be replaced by
the newer gender sensitive version of 1996. Should
you have further questions about this, please contact
Rabbi Malino.

September - October 2007
SELICHOT
PROGRAM
September 8
begins at 7:30 p.m.
It has been traditional
for many centuries for Jews to come together on a
Saturday evening at least four days prior to Rosh
Hashanah to begin the period of self-preparation for
the great days to come. These penitential prayers are
called Selichot - prayers for forgiveness. They are part
of the effort to attune the human heart to the experience
of the High Holy Days. The observance of Selichot
is a moving and inspirational prelude to the upcoming
Days of Awe.
Our congregation will gather on Saturday,
September 8, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. for our own special
Selichot observance. Prior to the service, and back by
popular demand, we look forward to a heartwarming and
joy-filled concert by San Diego’s own Second Avenue
Klezmer Ensemble. The group is known for its unique
blend of Jewish folk music of Eastern Europe with the
songs of the Yiddish theatre. The Ensemble consists
of founding members, singer Deborah Davis and
clarinetist Robert Zelickman who are joined by guitarist
Jiri Svoboda, bassist Bertram Turetzky and drummer
Jon Wishnuff.
For Deborah Davis, the love of this music stems
from another source--the memory of her immigrant
grandmother who introduced her to the music of her
youth and the songs of New York’s Yiddish musical
theatre. This Yiddish musical theatre, which once
thrived along Second Avenue, linked the immigrants
to their old country and their New World. It produced
a musical tradition that has since melded with the
folk music of Eastern Europe and, in the process, has
redefined Klezmer itself.
The group’s repertoire encompasses traditional
Klezmer music -- shers, bulgars, horas, freylakhs and
waltzes. It also includes Cantorial, Ladino and Israeli
pieces, in addition to the songs of the Yiddish theatre
and the folk songs of Eastern Europe. The music of
the Ensemble reflects their desire to draw on Klezmer’s
past, perform it in the present and contribute to its
future.
The Religious Practices Committee of Temple
Adat Shalom will host a reception immediately
following the program. Dessert and coffee will be
served at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the courtyard
outside the Social Hall.
The Selichot service, led by Rabbi Tamar Malino
and Cantor Lori Frank, will begin at 9:00 p.m. in the
sanctuary. Congregants and members of the community
are encouraged to stay and attend this worship
service.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE
Our membership committee has been active in
August! On the 18th we hosted a New and Prospective
Member Havdalah Service in which children and
children-at-heart had fun making Havdalah candles and
spice bags then joined for an inspirational service led by
Rabbi Malino. On August 24th we hosted a Prospective
Member Dinner following Erev Shabbat services. We
showed, in Rabbi Malino’s words, that TAS can be a
beit Knesset, a house of community.
Our goals in the coming months are threefold:
1. Recruitment, reaching out to the unaffiliated;
2. Integration, assessing the needs of all our members,
young and young-at-heart; and
8
MEMBERSHIP
3. Retention and establishing a caring community where
we all feel welcome to pray, attend classes, socialize
and perform acts of loving kindness.
Our committee is always open to ideas, suggestions
and names of those you think might be interested in
becoming part of the TAS family. You can contact Judith
Are the precious moments of
childhood vanishing?
(Not at Ganon Gil)
Valuing play is an important part of the daily
“work” at our preschool. With the demands and
pressures of life inching down to younger and younger
children, our preschool is an oasis of relaxation,
where creativity, self expression, positive social
interactions and cognitive growth are incorporated
in most everything we do.
Play promotes and enhances skills, such as
problem solving, persistence and collaboration that
contribute to success in elementary school years
(and life). It is also an ideal medium that creates
meaningful opportunities for Jewish learning.
Another great benefit: We almost always get smiles
from visitors passing through the courtyard, because
the children are enjoying themselves so much.
YOUTH & EDUCATION
Please feel welcome to stop in to visit sometime.
Hopefully we will help you to smile and perhaps even
spark a memory from your own childhood.
We feel very strongly about staying in touch with TAS students away at college. Our college committee
regularly sends little gifts, letters, and the Shofar. Please furnish the Temple with the college address of your
son or daughter so that we might continue to stay in touch. Thank you.
Dear Mosad Shalom Families,
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9 TH
IS OPENING DAY OF MOSAD SHALOM
Welcome back to the beginning of a new school year.
The Mosad Shalom School Committee has been actively
working toward making this a wonderful year for your
children. We are bringing together key elements to
achieve that goal, one being an outstanding curriculum,
offering many hands-on learning experiences. Our
objective is to create the environment and experiences
that inspire your children to feel proud of their heritage,
become knowledgeable Jews, and continue to be life-long
learners and members of the Jewish community.
Establishing ties to the Temple, and making strong
friendships with classmates are important aspects of the
religious school experience. We encourage our students
The programs are always diverse, with activities that
appeal to everyone.
Active parent participation in our programs by volunteering
demonstrates to your children that their Jewish education
is important. Schmearing bagels once a week as a bagel
volunteer, becoming a room parent or grade representative
to the school committee, or helping out at special events
are all opportunities for you as parents to participate with
your children. They LOVE to see you around Temple,
and are proud that you are involved!
Sunday, September 9 is our opening day, and we will
be hosting a parent orientation with new information
Please attend! (1st session - 9:00 a.m., 2nd Session 11:00
Temple Adat Shalom Participates in the
Poway Interfaith Council’s “Jewish Nite” Program
August 9, 2007 marked Temple Adat Shalom’s
participation at the Poway Interfaith Council Jewish
Nite, hosted by Pastor Larson at the Poway Community
Church. It is a Temple event which will be long
remembered by the community, with approximately
110 guests attending.
Dr. Sheldon Diamond, a long-time member of the
Poway Interfaith Council, introduced Rabbi Malino to
the people of various faiths in the community room.
Our Rabbi gave a brilliant presentation and answered
questions from guests and clergy with ease. One guest,
who remains anonymous, was so impressed, that he
gave a very generous sum to open a non-profit bank
account for future programs.
We are very grateful to our local supermarkets and
natural food stores for their generous gift cards which
provided us with all the food for our bountiful buffet
table. Please patronize Albertson’s, Vons, Ralphs, Stater
Bros., Henry’s Marketplace, and Baron’s who provided
all of the food and paper goods for the Taste of Judaism
and the Poway Interfaith Council Picnic at Lake Poway
on August 19th.
To our TAS cooks and bakers who spent many
hours shopping, chopping, and preparing all the
specialties for the beautiful buffet, thank you for a job
well done. Your labor of love was enjoyed by many
different faith groups in our community.
Special thanks to Joy and Jack Torchin, Laurie and
Alan Rathsam, Freda Heller, Fran Goldstein, and Ruth
Gach for all of their hard work. To Lorri Baker, who
helped immensely with the work behind the scenes,
and Richard Stegman, for taking all the photos at the
Jewish Nite, a special word of appreciation.
I thouroughly enjoyed coordinating the event and
working with all the wonderful people who helped make
this such a success.
SANCTUARY
CONSTRUCTION
As of early August our Sanctuary project was
about 2/3 complete and on schedule for completion
of the construction contract in early December. In
addition to the Sanctuary we will be improving
the lighting, repainting and replacing the carpet in
the Social Hall. We expect to have use of the new
Sanctuary in late December and plan for a formal
dedication in January.
Thanks to some significant new contributions
and design savings, we have substantially reduced the
initially expected gap between total project costs and
received and pledged contributions. By deferring some
of the sacred space items, we are hopeful that little, if
any, long term financing will be required. Naturally we
would like to complete all the planned sacred space
items now and limit short-term borrowing until receipt
of future pledged funds. However this cannot be done
without additional contributions. Now is the time for
our congregants to revaluate their ability to help us
complete the entire program on a debt-free basis.
HAVURAH HAPPENINGS
This is the one in a series of articles featuring existing
Temple Adat Shalom Havurot. We hope it fosters the
formation of new Havurot and stimulates existing
Havurot into new and interesting activities.
Havurah means a gathering or community of friends.
Each of our Havurot at Temple Adat Shalom is unique
and brings a wonderful sense of community to our
Havurah families. It provides for smaller setting
and more age/lifecycle appropriate activities for the
member families. If you are interested in finding out
more about the Havurot, please call Steve Bernsen
(Havurah Committee) at 858.668.0699 or send email
to: havurah@adatshalom.com
Harishonim Havurah
Harishonim Havurah began in 1982 when a group of
families were introduced to each other by Dick Spike
(Havurah Chairperson). Each of us had recently joined
Adat Shalom and was interested in belonging to a
Havurah. Our children were the first students in Ganon
Gil Preschool and we were eager to meet each other
and become part of Adat Shalom. Dick and Bobbi were
at our first meeting and they gave us some important
guidelines to follow. They told us that food could not
be our main focus (we are still working on that one) and
that we needed a specific night to meet. We have met
on the 3rd Saturday or Sunday for almost 25 years.
Through the years we have become family to each
other. In the beginning we began to know each other
by celebrating Shabbat together. One family would
host another family for Shabbat dinner. This tradition
allowed us to know each other and instilled Jewish
tradition in our children. We are friends and family
and have celebrated births, Bar and Bat Mitzvah’s,
weddings, and holiday celebrations together. As
a group we continue to break the Yom Kippur fast
together, celebrate Chanukah and enjoy the 2nd night
of Pesach.
In Adat Shalom’s early years we also volunteered our
time for various projects including: creating a sandbox
in a former swimming pool (now under the parking lot);
painting the original Mosad Shalom school classrooms;
building Ganon Gil’s first outdoor playground; and
constructing the current Bimah. Our members have
continued to be involved with Adat Shalom and have
served on various committees and the Boards of the
Temple, Men’s Club and Sisterhood.
We continue to meet each month where our evening
might include discussing current events, Israel, Temple
happenings, dinner, an evening of miniature golf, or just
reconnecting with each other.
Our members are Patti & Dale DeWoskin, Jeanne &
Mark Dillon, Susan & Ed Fields, Betsy & George
Gardner, Phyllis & Howard Levin, Judy & Rick Simons
and Dena & David Stein.
Grandma fills void in Uganda
By Yuxing Zheng
August 1, 2007
RANCHO BERNARDO
She’s 85, has five great-grandchildren, and had such a
painful back some years ago that walking for more than
two minutes left her gasping for breath. And, oh yes,
she recently flew more than 9,000 miles to a remote
village in Uganda to single-handedly teach Hebrew to
a small group of Jewish students. Lynne Elson’s life
is as exciting and as worldly as it sounds.
The petite Jewish woman from Rancho Bernardo set
out for about two weeks in early July to visit Nabugoye
in eastern Uganda, home to about 700 Abayudaya
Jews.
Toting a suitcase full of school supplies and 16 copies
of “The Hebrew Primer,” the jet-setting grandma with
a quick wit arrived to volunteer in the primary school
and teach Hebrew to five adult male students. “I
really felt like I was one of the family and pulled in
with love and warmth,” Elson said. “They called me
‘Mama’ because I’m old. At first it bothered me, but
then I realized it was an endearing term. They don’t
get very many 85-year-olds.”
The Abayudaya Jewish community in Uganda began
in 1919 when a military leader formerly loyal to
the British split from a nearby Christian group.
Abayudaya means “people of Judah” in Luganda,
a major language in Uganda. Over the decades, the
group developed in isolation and became strictly
observant. Its isolation helped members survive the
brutal regime of Idi Amin, the anti-Semitic former
president of Uganda who banned Jewish rituals during
the 1970s.
Elson first learned of the Abayudaya in a lecture at
a local synagogue in 2004. Hearing about how their
founding leader, Semei Kakungulu, performed a
circumcision on himself and his sons made her want
to learn more.
After the lecture, Elson traveled to Nabugoye for
two weeks in January 2006 through Kulanu, a group
that organizes trips to isolated Jewish communities
worldwide. Its annual trip to Nabugoye attracts about
a dozen Americans. Nabugoye certainly qualifies as
isolated. The town is on a hill that Elson estimates
rises more than 4,000 feet from the valley town where
Elson stayed in a hotel. Most of the local homes are
made of brown mud and roofed with corrugated metal.
Running water arrived only recently. The six-mile
car ride uphill to Nabugoye every morning took up to
45 minutes and required traveling along a path Elson
described as “not even a one-lane dirt road.”
The community receives about 15 volunteers a year,
though some stay for several months, said Israel Siriri,
the community chairman. Volunteers teach Hebrew
or lend their experience with medicine, sanitation,
or water supplies. The community relies on them to
improve its infrastructure, Siriri said.
Elson spent mornings at Hadassa Primary School,
where she unloaded a suitcase stuffed with colored
pencils, crayons and paper that members of her
synagogue in Poway helped contribute.
Elson helped fill a void for Hebrew teachers in the
community, said Aaron Kintu Moses, the assistant
rabbi and headmaster of the primary school. Moses
described Elson’s work as “very, very impressive,”
and said the children miss her.
“Working with Lynne was very, very good for this
community,” he said. “It was so good for them because
some of them got to improve their Hebrew language.
They talked good about her and they wished she comes
back to continue the program.”
Her trip to Uganda is just another chapter in the life
of a woman who has traveled to every continent
– including Antarctica.
Traveling, Elson said, allows her to escape her
everyday calendar obligations. It’s relaxing, she said,
and is never scary, even if she is flying solo.
TAS Professionals Jane Sable-Friedman
and Susan Cohn Participate In
Federation’s Israel Exchange Program
In July 2007, Mosad Shalom Religious School
Education Director Susan Cohn and Temple Executive
Director Jane Sable-Friedman traveled together with 10
other San Diego communal professionals on the UJF
San Diego/Sha’ar Hanegev Communal Professionals’
Israel Exchange Program.
Jane and Susan had the opportunity to forge close ties
with members of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, located at the
southern most part of the region and only 800 meters
away from the Gaza Strip.
In March, 2008 Temple Adat Shalom will have the
opportunity to host members of the kibbutz (pictured
below) so that they can learn firsthand about our
Jewish community. Pictured are Jane, Gidi Sabag
– Administrator of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, Tami Halevi
– Director of Education at the Kibbutz and Susan.
The purpose of this unique and highly subsidized
Federation program is to build lasting professional and
personal connections with the people of the Sha’ar
Hanegev Region.
While the trip included visits to major Jewish historical
and archaeological sites in Jerusalem and other parts of
Israel, a large portion of the time was spent in the Sha’ar
Hanegev Region (southern Israel) attending programs
and touring work sites, kibbutzim and facilities geared
to the particular interests of the travelers.
BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ON
CARA HABERMAN
Hi, my name is Cara
Haberman. This summer
I began my third year on
the Board of Trustees as
the Ganon Gil committee
chair. After having our three
children (Maiya, Leah, and
Benjamin) attend for about 9
years combined, Ganon Gil
has become very near and dear
to Mark and my hearts. It is
where we entered our lives at Temple Adat Shalom. The
place we felt so welcome and made our first San Diego
friendships. And Ganon Gil was our partner in raising
our children with such strong Jewish identities.
It is my job to share the needs and
accomplishments of Ganon Gil with the board. I try
to help integrate our new preschool families into the
greater synagogue life. I also have a ton of fun helping
run awesome programs, like the Annual Bounce-a-
Rama and No Ball at All Ball, that raise money and
build community for the school. It is a joy to serve on
the board in this capacity. In addition to serving as the
Chair for Ganon Gil I also find myself around temple
for Mosad Shalom committee meetings, Rabbi Search
Committee meetings, plating goodies for the Oneg, or
dabbling in ways and means. Not to mention enjoying
the beautiful Shabbat services and just schmoozing with
friends.
When I’m not at a meeting at TAS you can
usually find me snuggling at home with my beloved
husband Mark and my three awesome kids and sweet
niece Ashley. And when they are at school I sneak
off to the most wonderful job in the world, aside from
mom, to practice pediatrics with Children’s Primary
Care Medical Group.
If you have any questions or suggestions
about Ganon Gil please feel free to contact me at
ganongilboard@adatshalom.com And I hope to see
you at The Bounce-a-Rama in October!
Acknowledging Your
Gratitude to our
TAS Family in the Shofar
TAS members occasionally ask us to publish
thank-you notes for comfort provided to that
member due to a death in their family. To
avoid substantially increasing the length of
the Shofar, the TAS Executive Committee
has established a policy to include these
expressions of gratitude at the end of the
Shofar’s “Around the Temple” section.
“The following TAS members wish to
express their gratitude to their TAS family:
The Jones family for support provided
after the death of Jane Jones.”
