September - October 2007 Mark your calendar for these upcoming planned Men’s Club events: Aug 25: Havdalah Picnic with Sisterhood. Sept 16: Brunch with speaker Jeff Figler. Jeff is a nationally recognized collector extraordinaire who also writes a column about collecting for the Pomerado Newspaper Group (Poway Chieftain, Inland Corridor, RB News Journal). He specializes in sports, entertainment, and presidential memorabilia. Come join us for good food and good fellowship! Oct 14: Brunch with speaker Doug Stone. Doug is the Senior VP, Director of Risk Management, at the investment firm Nicholas-Applegate. The topic of his talk will be “Why you should be a global investor.” Doug is a highly-regarded national speaker and his talk promises to be filled with up-to-date information and sound recommendations, and delivered in a very approachable style. The Q&A period that follows the talk should be lively as well. Oct 28: Family Western Hoe-down. For information please see separate flyer with reservation form included within this issue of the Shofar. Nov 11: Brunch with speaker Richard Lederer. Richard is the author of more than 30 books about language and humor, including his best-selling Anguished English series. Dr. Lederer’s syndicated column, “Looking at Language,” appears in newspapers and magazines throughout the United States. Well-known from his “A Way with Words” radio show on public radio, Richard is also the father of Howard Lederer, the “Professor of Poker,” and Annie Duke, the winningest woman in the history of poker. Come join us this Veterans Day when Richard discusses his latest book about U.S. Presidents. September - October 2007 TAS Professionals Jane Sable-Friedman and Susan Cohn Participate In Federation’s Israel Exchange Program In July 2007, Mosad Shalom Religious School Education Director Susan Cohn and Temple Executive Director Jane Sable-Friedman traveled together with 10 other San Diego communal professionals on the UJF San Diego/Sha’ar Hanegev Communal Professionals’ Israel Exchange Program. Jane and Susan had the opportunity to forge close ties with members of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, located at the southern most part of the region and only 800 meters away from the Gaza Strip. In March, 2008 Temple Adat Shalom will have the opportunity to host members of the kibbutz (pictured below) so that they can learn firsthand about our Jewish community. Pictured are Jane, Gidi Sabag – Administrator of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, Tami Halevi – Director of Education at the Kibbutz and Susan. The purpose of this unique and highly subsidized Federation program is to build lasting professional and personal connections with the people of the Sha’ar Hanegev Region. While the trip included visits to major Jewish historical and archaeological sites in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel, a large portion of the time was spent in the Sha’ar Hanegev Region (southern Israel) attending programs and touring work sites, kibbutzim and facilities geared to the particular interests of the travelers. BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ON CARA HABERMAN Hi, my name is Cara Haberman. This summer I began my third year on the Board of Trustees as the Ganon Gil committee chair. After having our three children (Maiya, Leah, and Benjamin) attend for about 9 years combined, Ganon Gil has become very near and dear to Mark and my hearts. It is where we entered our lives at Temple Adat Shalom. The place we felt so welcome and made our first San Diego friendships. And Ganon Gil was our partner in raising our children with such strong Jewish identities. It is my job to share the needs and accomplishments of Ganon Gil with the board. I try to help integrate our new preschool families into the greater synagogue life. I also have a ton of fun helping run awesome programs, like the Annual Bounce-a- Rama and No Ball at All Ball, that raise money and build community for the school. It is a joy to serve on the board in this capacity. In addition to serving as the Chair for Ganon Gil I also find myself around temple for Mosad Shalom committee meetings, Rabbi Search Committee meetings, plating goodies for the Oneg, or dabbling in ways and means. Not to mention enjoying the beautiful Shabbat services and just schmoozing with friends. When I’m not at a meeting at TAS you can usually find me snuggling at home with my beloved husband Mark and my three awesome kids and sweet niece Ashley. And when they are at school I sneak off to the most wonderful job in the world, aside from mom, to practice pediatrics with Children’s Primary Care Medical Group.
