“California means setting new goals once
a challenge has been conquered.”
Bjørn Dunkerbeck, 41-time world windsurfing champion.
The world is vast – and there are so many places to discover. Journeys in the California are as
much fun as arriving at your destination. It is not just a comfortable camper van but a real home
on wheels, equipped with everything you need en route. It is also extremely fuel-efficient and
overcomes both roads and difficult terrain. What will be your first port of call?
California means loving nature for what it is.
Nature is beautiful – but sometimes it brings us pouring rain, slippery roads and sudden fog. This
won’t worry you in the California as you have reassuring all-round protection. Electronic safety
systems help to keep the vehicle on track and innovative driver assistance systems, available as options,
offer you even more comfort and convenience on your travels, so that you can enjoy nature
to the full.
California means enjoying the sunrise
instead of taking a photo of it.
Those who appreciate nature treat it with special respect. This is not only evident in your choice
of destination but also in the way you travel there – in a vehicle offering engines that have significantly
lower consumption than previous versions and therefore produce less emissions. There are four
economical TDIs with common rail technology and two powerful TSI units in the range of engines
for the California. You can also choose a California with BlueMotion Technology for even more
environmentally conscious driving – so that you will spend less time at the filling station and more
time in the great outdoors.
The California with BlueMotion Technology gives you the good feeling of saving up to 0.5 litres of
fuel per 100 km 1) in comparison with a California model without BlueMotion Technology, of
keeping pollutant emission as low as possible, and therefore of placing less burden on the environment.
This is made possible by a combination of innovative technologies such as the start/stop
system, regenerative braking, tyres with optimised rolling resistance – and by the economical engines.
You have a choice of three 2.0 l TDI engines 2) and a 2.0 l BiTDI. The two higher output engines
are equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. They can
also be combined with 4MOTION all-wheel drive as an optional extra.
California means taking the most exciting route,
not the easiest.
The most attractive places often wait just around the next corner. You may encounter a few surprises
on your way there: mud tracks, loose gravel, steep inclines, snow or rain – but this won’t cause any
delay as the California can be equipped with 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive. Should a wheel
lose traction due to poor weather conditions or uneven surfaces, the 4MOTION all-wheel drive
intervenes and variably distributes torque between the front and rear axle. For you, this means a safe
journey, even off the beaten track, when driving on demanding slopes or through shallow water.
The California Beach.
Just one look at the California Beach will make you want to take a seaside holiday and head straight
for the beach. Once you are there, you can enjoy the mild evening air and spend the night beneath
the standard elevating roof right where the waves break on the shore and let the sound of the
waves lull you to sleep. The attractive paint finishes for the California Beach, such as Sunny Yellow,
complete the enticing picture.
On long journeys in particular, you will appreciate the de luxe front seats with armrests and lumbar
support. They offer the driver and front passenger ideal lateral support and ensure maximum
comfort. The 2-seater bench seat is secured to rails in the floor and has an almost infinite sliding
adjustment. Folding down the backrest creates a comfortable sleeping surface measuring 1.50 x
2.00 m. A folding table completes the interior fittings and can be stowed in the sliding door when
not in use – and, while you rest and relax, the standard blinds housed in the roof frame can be
pulled down to assure your privacy.
The California Comfortline.
Every journey makes a lasting impression – and so does the California Comfortline. The impres sive
front end features distinctive chrome trim and standard halogen headlights. Fog lights complete
the elegant overall appearance. The turning lights make journeys in the California Comfortline not
only pleasant but also safer at blind intersections and road junctions. The California Comfortline
cuts an equally fine figure when parked with the standard elevating roof raised.
equipped with a fully functional kitchen unit. The 2-burner gas hob ensures relaxed cooking
and food supplies can be kept in the 42-litre compressor cool box. After your meal, the camping
crockery and cutlery can be washed in the sink and then put away in the drawer and tray underneath.
Another drawer under the bench seat provides additional storage space. The optional “Climatronic”
the California Edition: the many black accents on the body include the roof, door
handles, side sills and lower section of the bumper. This is complemented by darktinted
privacy glass for the rear window and rear side windows. The 17" “Cascavel”
The 2.0 l common rail TDI engines. A combination of small displacement, turbocharging
and direct injection makes the TDI engines exceptionally efficient. Precise
injection under high pressure means that the fuel burns evenly so that the engines
deliver high output yet have low consumption. Low maintenance costs also contribute
to the economy of these engines. A 2.0 l TDI engine with three different power outputs
and a 2.0 l 132 kW 3) BiTDI are available for the California.
Ramp angle: 14°. The more leeway this gives you, the more leeway you have when
looking for camping sites. The California can even cope virtually effortlessly with crests
having a ramp angle of up to 14°. Measured with standard equipment and a full load.
Hill-climbing ability: 37°. Serpentine
California with BlueMotion Technology.
Safety.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sets standards in sustainable mobility with its vehicles
featuring BlueMotion Technology. A technology package consisting of a start/stop
system, regenerative braking, cruise control and tyres with optimised rolling resistance
significantly lowers fuel consumption. This package can optionally be combined with
a 62 kW 1), 2) , 84 kW 3) or 103 kW 4) 2.0 l TDI engine, or with the 132 kW 5) 2.0 l BiTDI engine.
Instead of the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the 103 kW 4) and 132 kW 5) engines
are also available with a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) with integrated coasting
function (in conjunction with a multifunction display). This makes it possible to
drive even more economically. The two more powerful engines can, as an option, be
combined with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Thanks to BlueMotion Technology, the
California with a 62 kW 1), 2) or 84 kW 3) engine consumes an average of only 7.0 l of fuel
per 100 km which equates to a combined CO 2 emission figure of 184 g per km.
The BlueMotion Technology badge.
The badge shows that you drive a vehicle
with particularly low fuel consumption,
therefore placing as little burden as
possible on the environment.
You should not only feel comfortable in the California but safe, too. An intelligent,
comprehensive safety system gives you support during the journey and offers you
the best possible protection from injury in the event of an accident.
Regenerative braking (not illustrated).
Special software for energy management
raises alternator voltage during the vehicle’s
overrun and braking phases. This
recharges the vehicle battery, relieves
strain on the engine and therefore reduces
fuel consumption. The alternator
voltage can also be lowered during the
journey.
Start/stop system. After shifting into neutral and releasing the clutch, the engine is
switched off automatically, e.g. at red traffic lights. To start the engine again, it is
enough to step on the clutch.
Tyres with optimised rolling resistance.
The California with BlueMotion Technology
makes contact with the road via
tyres with optimised rolling resistance.
The lower rolling resistance of these tyres
reduces fuel consumption and therefore
CO 2 emission.
Airbags. Optimum protection is paramount when setting off on long journeys. The California therefore has airbags for the driver
and front passenger as standard as well as side and head airbags. The front passenger airbag can be deactivated using the vehicle key.
1) The fuel consumption and emission figures listed here have been determined in accordance with the measuring method prescribed by law. These figures do not refer to a single, particular
vehicle and do not constitute part of the offer but are purely for comparison purposes between the various types of vehicle. In addition to the fuel efficiency of a car, driving behaviour as well
as other non-technical factors (e.g. environmental conditions) play a role in determining a car’s fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. Additional equipment features and accessories (attachment
parts, tyres, etc.) can alter the relevant vehicle parameters – for example weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics – and, together with weather and traffic conditions, influence fuel
consumption and performance figures. Note in accordance with the version of directive 1999/94/EC currently valid: further information on the official fuel consumption and official specific
CO 2 emissions of new passenger cars is given in a guide containing data on fuel consumption, CO 2 emissions and power consumption for new passenger car models. It is available free of
charge at every point of sale in the European Union or, for prospective buyers in Germany, at DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Strasse 1, 73760 Ostfildern, and under
www.dat.de. Efficiency classes evaluate vehicles on the basis of CO 2 emissions taking into account the vehicle’s unladen weight. Vehicles corresponding with the average are given a D rating.
A + , A, B or C ratings are given to vehicles which are better than the present-day average, and E, F or G to those below this average. 2) Only for California Beach. 3) Not for
