Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Dale Smith gets the riders under starters order at the official launch of the new Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity has raised £17,000 from their first fundraiser for the district’s sick children. The charity was set up by doctors and nurses at Bradford Teaching Hospital in September and aims to make the Foundation Trust’s children’s facilities more child and family friendly. It also hopes to provide ‘home comforts’ alongside state-of-art equipment that every doctor would choose if budgets allowed. Consultant paediatrician, Beccy Bardgett, who was one of the 56 cyclists to take part in the Coast to Coast cycle from Morecambe Staff nurse Laura Baldwin with patient Saad Khan who suffers from thalassaemia, with consultant paediatrician Beccy Bardgett and Dr Mark Winton FOCUS January 2013 page 12 to Bridlington, said: “The charity has got off to a flying start with our cyclists smashing their original target of £10,000 by miles having raised a final total of £17,000. “The response and generosity of the public along our cycle route – many who have never been to Bradford in their lives – was truly awe-inspiring – from the AA man who donated £20 after he was called out to help with one of our support vehicles, to the cyclists who were riding in the opposite direction, who donated £10 after their puncture was repaired by one of our cyclists! We even had people coming up to us who had seen the launch on ITV Calendar, to donate money to the charity. “Since then, we’ve had countless offers of support from throughout the district and we’re keen to enlist more people to fundraise on our behalf so that they can sprinkle even more sunshine on the sick children of Bradford during their time in hospital.” The team who cycled the coast to coast also had a post-cycle party at the Aagrah restaurant in Thornbury which raised a further Local children, Hannah Young and Safah Aftab, who turned out to support the launch of the new charity £1,000 for the charity. Meanwhile, student, Waqas Mohammad, raised £500 by holding a sponsored silence at Bradford College, and young mum, Gemma Akram, held a sponsored sky-dive to thank staff from the neonatal unit for taking care of her daughter, Amber, who was born prematurely at 26 weeks. In November, dozens of runners, young and old, ran the city’s parkrun at Lister Park in Manningham to raise awareness of the charity. Beccy added: “On behalf of Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those people who have contributed in any way to fundraising for the sick children of this city and their families. “I’d also like to encourage everyone to keep coming up with new fundraising ideas and to continue their great efforts so that we can all bring the best medical equipment, home comforts and Gemma Akram, who did a parachute jump for the charity with two-year-old Amber play facilities, to our poorly children and patients.” If you would like to make a general donation to the charity you can visit www.justgiving.com/ Bradford-Hospitals-Childrens-Charity Can you help Bradford’s sick children?
