The Trust’s annual special events are delivered during the week of the AGM, attracting a combined audience of approximately 1500 people (staff, public and patient members, general visitors and volunteers). Read on for the highlights of this spectacular week. Hundreds of foundation trust members joined staff, governors, and directors for the trust’s seventh annual open event. Mark Steward, vice-chair of governors said that “this was again a great annual showcase event providing a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how our trust is responding to the needs of our patients. It was especially pleasing to see some of our community based teams taking part alongside their colleagues from St Luke’s Hospital and Bradford Royal Infirmary. Each year we are pleased to present awards to those teams which, in our view, best reflect the ethos of the day through the creativity they employ in the presentation of their exhibits and how well they engage with their audience.” “Firstly, we have to say that all involved should be proud of what they presented and it was particularly difficult to select the winners of the Governors Awards as the standards across the board were high.” There were three Governor Awards made for 2012. The ‘best stand’ awards went to the Estates Team and the Midwives and New-born Team. Estates highlighted a key investment that the foundation trust had made in sustainable technology through the use of solar photovoltaic installations (solar panels). Their stand had a mocked up model of a cycling velodrome powered by photovoltaic cells, providing a great interactive element where visitors could not only enjoy themselves by taking part in the many races but also learn more about how this source of power was helping the Trust to reduce its carbon footprint and cut costs on energy bills. The ‘Midwives and New-born’ team made very good use of a new-born baby doll which provided some great interactive engagement around the practicalities of parenting. Governors also presented the PET CT Scanning team with a ‘highly commended’ certificate, as they had narrowly missed out on one of the ‘best stand’ awards. Hospital Oscars and Team of the Year Awards Hospital Oscar winners 2012. From l to r Karen Moreland, Amanda Meehan and Carol Metcalfe Three unsung heroes were honoured at the foundation trust’s annual staff awards evening. The Hospital Oscar awards went to theatre nurse Carol Metcalfe who works in the ear, nose and throat theatres at BRI; Amanda Meehan, a medical secretary in the Children’s Development Centre at St Luke’s Hospital and Karen Moreland, cleaning services assistant at Pennine Breast Imaging Services, St Luke’s Hospital. The trio were nominated by colleagues for their outstanding contributions to patient care. They were presented with their Oscars, a cheque each for £1000, and a certificate. The Team of the Year awards had attracted 12 excellent entries. The Hyperacute/Acute Stroke and Neurology Unit beat tough competition to win first place and £5,000. The Hospital Palliative Care Team were runners up and received £3,000, and the Midwife Neonatal Examiners won third place and received £2,000. Russ Piper, Chief Executive of Sovereign Health Care presented the awards to the delighted staff winners. The Chairman, David Richardson, expressed thanks to Sovereign Hyperacute/Acute Stroke Team accepting their award from Russ Piper of Sovereign Healthcare Health Care on behalf of the trust for their continued support for these very important and highly regarded awards. vascular investigation rheumatology oncology maternal radiology diabetes TRANSLATING RESEARCH Open Event September 2012 INTO PRACTICE children stroke Translating Research into Practice Research and Development was a key focus of the open event with a number of visitors attending our special presentations which focussed on how research was being applied to benefit patients at our Foundation Trust and beyond. Visitors were able to take away a copy of the special booklet produced for the event which features teams from our Foundation Trust and the research they are involved in. This booklet is available electronically at www.bradfordhospitals. nhs.uk or you can get in touch with the membership office to request a hard copy. vision BiB eye critical quality safety respiratory elderly infection head & neck haematology disease renal ENT Volunteer Annual Awards Ceremony Volunteers who work at Bradford Teaching Hospitals were honoured in the annual thank-you ceremony held for the first time at the Hilton Hotel. Awards were given out to 43 volunteers with five, 10, 15 and 20 years’ service at the event hosted by chairman David Richardson and chief executive Bryan Millar. Gerry Briscoe of the Friends of Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) was named Volunteer of the Year for his unstinting work at the hospital over the past 23 years. Gerry, 87, who has spent time each week acting as a volunteer guide in the hospital’s Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department, also organises the rota for the 12 ENT guides and has, until recently, served as a committee member of the Friends of the BRI. Second place went to St Luke’s volunteer guide, Brian O’Neil Gerry Briscoe, winner of the 2012 ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’ who works in Horton Wing outpatients’ department. The audience heard how his help with capturing patient feedback from outpatients had enabled the department to “monitor standards and identify where improvements could be made.” Joint third place went to Alison Hudson, a volunteer from the department of diabetes and endocrinology at the Bradford Royal Infirmary and Jo Davanna a volunteer with the Elizabeth Foundation. All the winners received a glass plaque, a certificate and gifts. Certificates were also presented to 15 student volunteers with 50 hours’ service, four students with 100 hours’ service and one student with 200 hours’ service. FOCUS January 2013 page 21
