CLEVELAND
VegFest
“Every adversity, every failure,
every heartache carries with it
the seed of an equal or greater
benefit.” ~ Napoleon Hill
Inaugural VegFest Breaks New Ground
for Cleveland’s Burgeoning Lean, Green,
Compassionate Scene!
On June 1, Cleveland VegFest debuts at Cleveland State University. The familyfriendly
event will feature top speakers, authors, and chefs in their fields: Nutrition,
Ecology, Social Justice and Animal Rights, and the art of preparing delicious, wholesome
food.
“Evidence consistently demonstrates that adopting a vegan lifestyle has an extensive
impact on human health, environmental sustainability, social justice and civil liberties,
as well as the intention to live compassionately,” says Jen Kaden, a VegFest organizer.
“We are ecstatic to be bringing a top-notch event to Cleveland, which will serve
as not only a catalyst for inspiration and migration toward the vegan philosophy, but a
bank of resources for the journey.”
VegFest will offer invaluable information for newcomers interested in exploring these
benefits, while simultaneously feeding the minds of ‘Veg-Veterans’ with an expansive
lineup: George Eisman, Registered Dietician, will address the connection between our
diets and the cancer epidemic; author, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, promises to guide
you through the process of aspiring to new outlooks and making meaningful transitions;
and, for those interested in going deep, acclaimed author of The Sexual Politics
of Meat, Carol Adams, will discuss the social consequences of our prevalent meatcentered
diet. A full day of discourse and demonstrations with abundant retailers,
organizations, and local restaurants participating in the Festival Marketplace, VegFest
is sure to provide ample fodder for the brain, heart, and stomach!
Some Facts
about Seeds
• Milkweeds have large seed pods
which burst open to release their
seeds. Seed dispersal
• Sycamore seeds have wings to
help them spin away on the wind.
• Dandelion seeds have feathery
tufts that act like parachutes,
whirling them away through the
air as they drop to the ground.
• Many seeds and fruits have
wings to help them whirl through
the air. Maple fruits have wings.
So too do the seeds of ashes, elms
and sycamores.
• Some seeds are carried by water.
Coconut seeds can float on the
sea for thousands of kilometers.
Some fruits, like geraniums and
lupins, simply explode, showering
seeds in all directions.
• The largest seeds are those of
the double coconut or coco-demer
of the Seychelles, which can
sometimes weigh up to 20 kg.
30,000 orchid seeds weigh barely
1 gm.
• The world’s biggest tree, the
giant redwood, grows from tiny
seeds that are less than 2 mm
long.
• Coconut trees produce only a
few big seeds; orchids produce
millions, but only a few grow into
plants.
“If you think in
terms of a year,
plant a seed; if in
terms of ten years,
plant trees; if in
terms of 100 years,
teach the people.”
