CITY <strong>of</strong> CANNING<br />

The City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canning</strong> jointly with CALM is responsible for the management <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Park</strong>. The City <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Canning</strong> <strong>and</strong> CALM will develop a Memor<strong>and</strong>um <strong>of</strong> Underst<strong>and</strong>ing setting out the mechanisms for this<br />

joint management arrangement. The City will manage the areas zoned for Recreation <strong>and</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the areas<br />

zoned for Conservation <strong>and</strong> Protection as displayed in Table 1.<br />

NPNCA <strong>and</strong> CALM<br />

Under the CALM Act 1984 conservation reserves are specified as national parks, conservation parks, nature<br />

reserves, <strong>and</strong> other similar reserves <strong>and</strong> are vested in the National <strong>Park</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Nature Conservation Authority<br />

(NPNCA). These reserves are managed on behalf <strong>of</strong> the NPNCA by the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Conservation <strong>and</strong><br />

L<strong>and</strong> Management (CALM).<br />

The NPNCA is responsible for having management plans prepared for all l<strong>and</strong>s that are vested in it. A<br />

Draft Management Plan for the <strong>Canning</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Park</strong> was prepared by CALM <strong>and</strong> issued by the<br />

NPNCA for public comment. Thirty eight submissions were received <strong>and</strong> were considered in the<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> this final plan prior to its approval by the NPNCA <strong>and</strong> the Minister for the <strong>Environment</strong>.<br />

The Fire <strong>and</strong> Rescue Service <strong>of</strong> Western Australia endorsed the plan on 24 June 1997. The Bush Fires<br />

Board endorsed this Plan under Section 34(1) <strong>of</strong> the Bush Fires Act (1954) on 9 July 1997.<br />
