Other • Guidance counselor Cathy Dziekan directed the Snack Pack, a group for students who have experienced the loss of an immediate family member. On June 4th, Kate Nicoll and Cindy Trifone, from “Soul Friends” in Wallingford, visited the group. “Soul Friends” is a counseling practice that employs the use of therapy dogs. Additionally, the Snack Pack had an opportunity to work directly with Robert Lawrence Friedman, author of The Healing Power of the Drum. Mr. Friedman is nationally known for his “therapeutic drumming” techniques.” He tours the world and has appeared on national television. 30 Annual Report to the Community www.northbranfordschools.org
Elementary TOTOKET VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Nancy Brittingham, Principal Enrichment Activities • The After School Enrichment Program completed its sixth year in 2006-2007, offering sessions in November and in March. 80 students participated in offerings, which included science activities, Japanese paper cutting, crafts, scrap booking, watercolor painting and physical fun. The program supports the District Strategic Plan to expand school offerings and programming options for enrichment. • Homework Club was offered again this school year and provided a quiet place for students to complete their homework on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. • Fourth grade students participated in a Spanish Enrichment Program taught by North Branford High School Spanish students. Eight lessons were presented to each class in which students learned Spanish words, simple phrases and knowledge of Hispanic culture and customs. A Spanish Fiesta culminated the program with song and dance in the Hispanic tradition. • PTO Cultural Arts programs featured the National Circus Project, a weeklong artist-in-residence program for fifth grade students which culminated in a “Circus”, presented to the entire school by fifth grade students. Other cultural arts programs included the Lancraft Fife and Drum Corp, The Faustwork Mask Theatre, Taikoza, Japanese Drumming and a Salsa dancing workshop for fourth grade students. Student Academic Awards and Recognition • The South Central Superintendent’s Association (SCASA) recognized two fifth grade students for their service to others, their academic prowess, and their leadership in the school community. • The Principal’s Award for Academic Achievement was awarded to eight fifth grade students for their outstanding achievement in academic areas and the allied arts. • The Principal’s Improvement Award was awarded to eight fifth grade students for their outstanding growth and improvement during their fifth grade year.
