“Pelvic Conformation . . . and its Influence on a Dressage Seat” By Ute Miethe, LMT/LAMT NCTMB Nationally Certified Massage Therapist The July issue of Dressage Today featured a very interesting article from Susanne von Dietze. Here are the main points of the article: The secret to a quiet seat lies in the proper positioning of the rider’s joints - they should be in neutral (or middle position), unless the rider gives an aid. Dietze has observed that in dressage, the stirrups are often too long, which puts the hip joint in its end position which will only reduce its range of motion and thereby interfere following the horse’s movement correctly. Another example of reduced range of motion would be hollowing the back. Only if the joints are in the neutral position, can the rider’s body absorb shock effectively, which also prevents the joints from becoming stressed, possibly leading to chronic injuries later. You may have heard the concept of skeletal riding before - this describes exactly what it means. Tension in the rider’s midsection will show up as too much movement in other parts of the body, such as legs or head bobbing, plus stiff shoulders, depending on how the individual body compensates for it. If a rider’s pelvis is not able to rotate adequately, adjusting to the motion of the trot, the lumbar area will often appear to move back and forth in the midsection, or wobble excessively. Riding a horse that is too wide for a rider’s conformation will also prevent the pelvis and the joints from functioning correctly. A rider should be able to spread the legs away from a horse. If this is not possible, either the horse is too wide for the rider’s built or the rider is stiff in the hip joints. Stretching exercises may help, but depending on the horse and rider mismatch, it may have its limitations. The length of the rider’s pelvis plays a role in his/her ability to relax the midsection. A rider with a longer pelvis tends to feel more comfortable on a bigger-moving horse than a horse with flatter, shorter gaits because it allows for more time to follow the horse’s movement. Such riders usually have a harder time on horses with gaits that are naturally shorter. On the other hand, a rider with a shorter pelvis tends to have a harder time following the movement of a big-gaited horse, thereby creating unnecessary tension. Having a long pelvis also allows one to use the pelvis as a lever more effectively, which can increase seat effectiveness. However, the downside is that longer pelvises take more core strength to stabilize. A tired rider with a long pelvis tends to wobble in the midsection more than a rider with a shorter pelvis would. Different pelvic conformations often create misunderstandings between students and instructors, because the horse may be easy to sit for the instructor, yet not for the student because of the different pelvic conformations between rider and instructor. The twist of a saddle can make a difference and may make it easier for narrow-hipped riders to sit a horse that may otherwise be too wide for them, but it could still have its limitations and the rider would be wise to take this into consideration when it comes to matching the horse to the person. My own horse is very wide and I constantly work on being loose and following his movement. Then one day I rode my friend’s narrower Paint/TB cross and it was so much easier to sit on her and aid her. Now I know why. I would say I have a medium/wide pelvis; not sure about the length though. I think this is very valuable information for any rider. Some upper level Dressage riders probably know instinctively, which horses they can sit better than others, because their pelvic conformation matches the horse better.
