REGULATIONS FOR CHANGING SPORTS
Students have two weeks to make up their minds about the exercise activity they would like to join.
At the end of this period they must stay with the activity they are in. In the case of teams with outside
games scheduled, once the final cut has been made, a student must stay with that sport. The athletic
director and the coaches involved must clear all changes.
ATHLETIC TRAINING RULES
Any interscholastic team member found in violation of the School’s Fundamental Rule with regard
to the use of alcohol and/or drugs is considered to have violated the Athletic Training Rules. Students
found in violation of the Smoking or Smokeless Tobacco Rules as explained on page 28 of this
Handbook will be considered to be in violation of Training Rules.
Coaches, in consultation with the Athletic Director, have discretion to respond to a player
on their own team as they see fit. (For example, a coach can decide that a student coming off
of a suspension has to earn back a starting position. A captain who violates the athletic training
rules rule could be asked to step down from their position of leadership.) A student who violates
Training Rules will not be eligible for a varsity letter or any other athletic award at the end of the
season. Students who are not using tobacco but who are found present when tobacco (smoking or
chewing) is being used, are considered in violation of Training Rules. Students who break Training
Rules in this way with regard to tobacco use may, with the head coach’s recommendation, earn an
athletic award. A second violation will result in automatic dismissal from the squad.
Training Rules are in effect starting on the day that practice for a team begins and remain in effect
until the end of the season.
Uniform enforcement of the penalty is the responsibility of the Coach and Athletic Directors.
When there are extenuating circumstances, the Faculty-Student Athletic Committee will review the
case immediately before the athletic penalty is enacted. Offenders will be allowed to appear before
the committee to defend their actions.
FOUNDERS LEAGUE
Taft competes in the Founders League in most sports. The heads of the Founders League schools have
agreed on the following expectations regarding behavior of fans at athletic contests. Spectators should
watch games from those areas defined by each school as spectator areas. Spectators should not run up
and down the sidelines, call to opposing players, coaches or referees in an unsportsmanlike manner, enter
the field of play, stand behind the opposing team’s bench and heckle or give cheers that are profane or
mock competitors. Spectators who abuse these guidelines will be subject to disciplinary action.
