President’s Leadership Awards
One of the most prestigious awards presented by Truman State University, the President’s Leadership Award honors select Truman alumni and friends for
meritorious service through their gifts of volunteerism, expertise and financial resources. The 2010 President’s Leadership Awards were presented at the
annual Foundation Banquet on April 10 to two couples who have made significant personal contributions to Truman―Darrell and Nancy Krueger and
Stan and Doris (Pickens) Bohon (’43).
Darrell and Nancy Krueger
Darrell W. Krueger, along with
steadfast support from his wife, Nancy,
has been a respected leader in higher
education throughout his career, and
two decades of his dedicated service have
been devoted to Truman. He began his
career at Truman in the early 1970s as a
member of the faculty for two years
before being appointed vice president for
academic affairs and dean of instruction.
He served as president of Winona State
University in Minnesota for 16 years
and returned to Truman in October 2008 when the Board of Governors
asked him to assume the role of president. He retired from that position
this past May.
Darrell graduated summa cum laude as co-valedictorian from
Southern Utah State College in 1967, with a bachelor of arts degree in
political science and history, and he earned a master’s degree in 1969
and a Ph.D. in 1971 from the University of Arizona-Tucson.
An Arizona native, Nancy was born and raised in Tucson and
attended Eastern Arizona College. Shortly after returning from a
mission to Toronto, Canada, she met Krueger who was finishing his
graduate studies at the University of Arizona. The two married, and
after Darrell completed his graduate studies in 1971, he accepted the
position of assistant professor of political science at Truman, and they
moved to Kirksville. For the next 18 years, the Kruegers lived in
Kirksville where they raised their four children. Two of their children
are Truman graduates.
In addition to caring for their family and supporting her husband in
the various roles his jobs have required, Nancy has served in a number
of positions in the church. A compassionate service leader, she has
taught in the church’s institute and seminary programs, provided
instruction for youth courses, and served as a shift coordinator for the
St. George Temple. Previously, she served as president of the Relief
Society, a philanthropic and educational women’s organization.
The Kruegers are members of the Joseph Baldwin Society which
honors and recognizes those who have provided a planned gift for the
benefit of the University. In 2009, they made a leadership gift to
support the “Investing in Students” fundraising initiative that was
established to provide financial support for Truman students in
response to challenging economic conditions.
Stan and Doris (Pickens) Bohon
Natives of northeast Missouri,
Stan and Doris (Pickens) Bohon
(’43) met in typing class while
attending Truman in the 1940s.
Stan spent three years as a student
at Truman before attending the
University of Missouri School of
Dentistry. Doris graduated from
Truman in 1943 with a bachelor of
science in education with two
majors―business education and
physical education―and taught in
Kansas City while Stan finished dental school. Shortly after the two
were married in December 1944, Stan joined the Army, and later on,
he joined his father and brother in the Bohon Dental Group in
Kirksville. He retired in 1991.
Longtime supporters of their alma mater, the Bohons are members
of Truman’s Northeast Missouri Alumni Chapter, the John R. Kirk
Society, and the Pershing Circle. In addition, they are among the
alumni volunteers assisting with the ongoing “Bright Minds Bright
Futures” campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the history of
Truman. In 2004, the Bohons were recognized with Truman’s Alumni
Distinguished Service Award, and the couple served as grand marshals
for the 2008 Homecoming parade. Doris served on the Truman State
University Foundation Board for six years and was a member of the
Kohlenberg Lyceum Series Centennial Celebration committee, which
worked to increase the endowment for the series in honor of the
Lyceum’s 100th anniversary.
The Bohons reside in Kirksville, Mo., and spend the winters in
Florida. They have three children: Rick, a dentist in Columbia, Mo.;
Connie, a physician in the Washington, D.C. area; and Libby, a dental
hygienist who is a 1982 Truman graduate.

Andi Harrington (’04) and Matt Cosby
(’04) were married on Oct. 3, 2009, and live
in St. Peters, Mo. Andi is a development
manager for the Crohn’s and Colitis
Foundation of America. Matt is with the

Kristin (Walstrom) Korneliussen (’04,
’05), Dupont, Wash., is a teacher with the
Bethel School District.
Amelia (O’Donnell) Riney (’04) and Mike
Riney (’04) live in O’Fallon, Mo. Amelia is a
teacher with the Ft. Zumwalt School District.
Mike’s position with Boeing is with F18
financial controls. They have a son, Scott.
Philip Schiff (’04) received a PhD in physics
from Stony Brook University in 2009 and is a
postdoctoral scholar (chemical physics) at Tel
Aviv University.
Tiffany Tiller (’04), Kansas City, Mo.,
received a doctor of optometry degree from
Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus
University in 2009.
