Scenic FreeChoice authentic village experience
You will discover many towns and villages on your Scenic river cruise but now, for the fi rst time, Scenic
Tours, has secured exclusive access to several special villages off the beaten track where you will mix
with the locals and, for a short time, share in traditional cultural experiences. Here you will go beyond
the external veneer usually presented for tourists and meet local families, visit their homes and and learn
about their way of life. Once in the village you might choose to do one of the following activities.
Meet a wine making family and learn traditional baking
One such visit is to a family winery where you’ll meet family members and enjoy a private wine
tasting in their ancient, candle-lit cellar among the wine barrels and barrows. You’ll learn about the
owner’s unusual collection of wooden bow ties and, during harvest you may even help to pick grapes.
On another visit, you’ll be invited into a home to bake traditional specialities like onion pie, potato
pancakes or Krapfen (a delicious sweet-fi lled fried dough). And you can even take your treats with you
to share with the group.
Make your own paper and sample local schnapps
You may choose to visit an old paper mill to watch paper being made in the traditional way, and then
make some yourself. Or visit a private castle and meet the piano-maker who collects and restores
18th century pianos - his collection is amazing. Here you’ll be treated to a short concert and a glass of
wine. You may also enjoy coffee and cake in a private home and visits to a traditional iron foundry, a
local dairy farm, a schnapps distillery, and more.
Enjoy a barbeque with the locals
After your explorations everyone will gather for a fabulous barbeque in a small walled park of an
ancient ruin. Feast on local specialties such as meats, sausage and home baked bread. This will be
accompanied by complimentary beer and soft drinks as well as local entertainment. To top it all off the
locals are invited to join you.
The Scenic FreeChoice options in the village are varied and subject to availability and limited numbers. Activities vary and may not always be
available. In the event of inclement weather the meal may be located in a local restaurant.
Take a traditional carriage ride through town
Be invited into amazing underground cellars
