Automotive mechanics have always qualified for tradecertification, but we are pleased to advise that DOFT will now consider applications for restricted certification by qualified marine mechanics who have completed national training module AURT237271A (or equivalent), as well as restricted business licenses for workshops carrying out boat trailer repairs. Both tradespersons certification and business licensing are functions performed by DOFT, and further information on this can be found at: http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ Tradespeople/Motor_repairers_and_insurers/Motor_repairers_ guidelines.html We’d like to take the opportunity to remind members that there are significant fines for non-compliance with the Motor Vehicle Repairs Act. Repairers should also consider professional and public liability relating to the repair of trailers, and it would be wise to talk your insurer if your business does not hold the required licenses and trade certificates. One of the most popular and entertaining events at the Sydney International Boat Show is the Boat Building Competition. As well as providing entertainment to the crowds that gather, the Boat Building Competition has a serious side. Judges are on the look out for particularly talented builders and sailors to take to New Zealand the following year to challenge the Kiwis in the Marine Trades Challenge organised by the Boating Industry Training Organisation and the Marine Industry Association of New Zealand The Australian team chosen take up the challenge was: Jarred Stahlhut and Tom Denahy from Noakes Boat and Shipyard Jarrod Browne and Mitchell Gulpers from Van Munster Boats Unfortunately the Aussies had a setback when Jarred Stahlhut developed appendicitis and was unable to fly, let alone compete. Stuart Clark from Noakes volunteered to fill his spot. Saturday 20 May dawned bright and clear with good race conditions. Paul Burgess who accompanied the team was pleased with the build, but when the Aussies hit the water they also hit some engine problems and were passed by the Kiwis. Our team came second in the Best Built Boat section and though a little disappointed enjoyed the whole experience, especially meeting other apprentices and members of the industry. Better luck next year boys. BIA thanks Michael Callanan BIA and the Marine Brokers Association have expressed their gratitude to Michael Callanan (Ellison Tillyard Callanan solicitors) presenting a Certificate of Appreciation for his ongoing support of the industry at a luncheon in Sydney. A practicing solicitor with more than 25 years experience engaged with boating industry business, Michael has also been an inspirational speaker on legal matters at a number of training and development events hosted by the BIA, and provided professional services to the BIA, not to mention our members, in a wide range of matters. Bringing a genuine understanding of the business dynamic and broad diversity in the boating industry, we’ve valued Michael’s input and capacity to help out, often pro-bono, and 26 - June 2010 BIA of NSW LOGBOOK

C a l l a n a n made a dashing appearance for the BIA Presidents XI in the 2009 inaugural cricket match with NSW Maritime, sustaining ‘hammie’ damage early in the day but toiling on till stumps in the unfortunate narrow-margin loss to Brett Moore’s men. As this Logbook goes to print, Michael will have once again delivered the low-down on a spread of legal considerations relevant to Marine Sales Professionals, and performed as adjudicator in a boisterous debate on ethical conduct – all without protective clothing! Our thanks again to Michael Callanan for his contribution to the Boating Industry. Top honour for two New South Wales marinas Soldiers Point Marina. Only two marinas in Australia have been awarded 5 Gold Anchors under the Gold Anchor rating scheme, Soldiers Point Marina at Port Stephens and Empire Marina Bobbin Head. Soldiers Point Marina hit the high spots last month when Ms Jody McKay, NSW Minister for Tourism and Minister for the Hunter region bestowed upon the marina the prestigious Five Gold Anchor rating. Marina manager Darrell Barnett was understandably elated with the honour. “We work hard to ensure Soldiers Point Marina maintains its position as a true world class facility,” he declared. Barnett has been with the marina since 2000 and was among the early candidates to achieve the Certified Marina Manager certificate instituted by the Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA). Empire Marina is also no stranger to awards, in 2009, the 200 berth marina, located in the picturesque Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, in Sydney’s northern suburbs, was voted the Australian Marina of the Year. The Gold Anchor program is designed to provide boat owners and marina users with a simple means to determine whether a specific marina fits their needs and requirements. It has been likened to the star rating used worldwide by hotels. Gold Anchor ratings range from three through five (the maximum). A thorough research and development process for a marina to be rated has resulted in 95 assessment criteria being employed. Infrastructure, facilities, planning and services are all assessed, together with independent site inspection and assessment. Gold Anchor-rated marinas are also subject to ‘mystery shopper’ audits aimed at protecting the integrity of the scheme. For further information: Empire Marina Bobbin Head www.empiremarinas.com.au; Soldiers Point Marina www. soldiersptmarina.com.au Boat Manufacturers Association AGM at Terrey Hills The Boat Manufacturers Association (BMA) held their Annual General Meeting at Terrey Hills in March, following a visit to the nearby Buizen factory. Steve Howe of Buizen supported by Dave Warren showed the group through the newly extended facility, with particular focus on the new-generation build process being applied to the new 52-footer (see article on page 28). Chairman Alan Steber warmly thanked sponsors DIAB Australia for a great lunch in the Club’s dining room. The afternoon’s meeting was brief, Mr Steber was returned to the Chair with Mike Rees of Seawind supporting. It also included a presentation on funding and support initiatives currently in train at NSW Industry and Investment (formerly Department of State and Regional Development). The next meeting of the BMA will be on Wednesday 20 October, with a site visit of the Steber facility preceding a general meeting of BMA members and guests.
