Member Profile Ian Lindsay “My customers are no longer clients but close friends …” Hood Sailmakers Sydney is located in Brookvale in the northern beaches of Sydney. It is part of an international group of sailmakers trading as Hood Sailmakers. Hood Sailmkers (Aust) Pty Ltd is 100% Australian owned and operated by Ian Lindsay and Ian Broad and was the first sail loft outside of the USA to be granted a franchise in 1968 by the founder Ted Hood. Ian Lindsay has been with Hood Sailmakers for 43 years and has seen a lot of changes over his time in the industry. Ian started sailing in summer of 1959 then went into a sailmaking apprenticeship with Hood Sailmakers in December 1967. In 1978 he became a joint director/owner of Hoods with four partners and now after 33 years he has one partner. He spoke to Logbook about his time in the industry. Why did you to become a sailmaker? What attracted you to sailmaking? I never planned to be a sailmaker, I was basically pushed by some well known sailing identities, who had helped/coached me in the early years when learning to sail. After winning State, National and Inter Dominion titles in junior class boats, I found myself doing an apprenticeship in Sailmaking. Who trained you and where did you train? I started my apprenticeship with Joe Pearce in an old timber boatshed in Careening Cove and finished my time with Peter Cole, who had taken over the company. Hoods moved to Brookvale in 1988. How long have you been a sailmaker? I left school on the Friday and started sailmaking on the Monday - I'm now in my 43rd Year. What changes have you seen in sailmaking in your time in the industry? The changes in sailmaking have been massive - from cotton to dacron sails to exotic laminates, such as kevlar, spectra and carbon sail fabrics. From cutting sails on the floor to computer aided designs and computerised cutting. The hand finishing of a main for a 30 footer used to take 8-10 hours - it can now be done in one hour. The old art of sailmaking is very much a thing of the past. What does the future hold for sailmaking? Will it continue as a profession? There will always be a market for sailmaking due to maintenance and repairs of sails and the attention required by the serious bluewater and keen racing sailors. Our profession goes beyond manufacturing sails with measuring, trimming rigs and coaching of skippers and crews, which are not available with imported sails. What changes have you seen in the boat building industry over time? Production yacht builders were very strong from the ’70s to ’80s, but with offshore production yachts growing in numbers, the Australian boat builders are slowly dying with only a handful left. What keeps you in the industry, why do you love it so much? I have enjoyed the many years of my trade which involves a lot of sailing and this has lead to a very large customer base. These customers are no longer clients but close friends and will carry on well into my retirement – another 43 years to go! You are one of longest exhibitors at Sydney International Boat Show. What was it like in 1976 when you first came to the show? My first show was 1976 and the venue for the BIA Boatshow was the old Sydney Showground. Our display was set up in an old cattle shed and the smell of the animals was very much real. Other exhibitors were scattered between pavilions and larger boats were in the main arena. I'll bet you've seen it all over the years. Any funny stories that you'd like to share with us. One of the funniest locations for the Boatshow was on one of the old wharfs near Pyrmont. The show was set up in an old warehouse and on the wharf. We (the exhibitors and the visitors) were constantly getting bombarded with pigeon droppings. One exhibitor had a big open runabout and displayed a sign ‘just add water and it's yours’. That night we had a huge storm and the runabout was positioned under a major roof leak, and was flooded. I guess ‘God bought the boat’. All exhibition stands on the wharf were totally blown away. What does the future hold for you? Any thoughts on retiring? Eventually I would like to semi retire and pass my knowledge onto my replacement so that existing and new Hood clients receive the service I have provided in the past.
