It was great to see our Middle College students dressed so well and marching so proudly last Wednesday. Year 6/7 Art Excursion The students in Years 6 & 7 have been exploring the Elements of Art, as part of their Semester One Art Program. 6/7M and 6/7C recently visited Alpha 31 Studio in Tinana, to learn about sculpture (form, texture, proportion, abstraction, positive shape and negative space). The excursion was an authentic experience for these classes, to visit a sculpture garden, an artist’s workspace and gallery. Considering the work of others, and viewing the elements of art within the artworks of artists, in their own community, was an invaluable experience enjoyed by all. The students participated in a workshop, where they used clay hand building techniques to create a 3D clay animal sculpture. Students enjoyed using their imaginations, hands and learning about sculpture and art. Cross Country Congratulations to all the Middle College students who participated in the College Cross Country last week. Six students then competed in the Primary Zone Cross Country: Perth Bradford, Matilda Davies, Luke Radburn, Dustin Hadden, Daniel Hoodcamp and Nathaniel Nehow. We wish our Middle College students travelling to the Fraser District Zone Cross Country, in Hervey Bay next Wednesday, all the very best : Susie Green, Shannon Trigger, Phillip Bell & Rhys McShane. Requests for Schoolwork Periodically, teachers have received requests for class work from parents, whose children are sick at home. Whilst every effort is made to provide this work, we ask that parents understand that the teachers are generally busy teaching until class breaks at 11:00am and 1:00pm, and are unable to answer emails until then. We ask for your patience, and will endeavour to respond to requests at the first available opportunity. Middle College 4
SENIOR COLLEGE News Royle River Car Wash 'Splish, Splosh, Splash, let us wash your car in a flash! Half of the Year 9/10 Business class are running a Charity Car wash, called ‘Royle River Car Wash’ for the USQ business challenge. It will be held on 14 and the 21 of May at Riverside Christian College, in the big car park. All money raised will be donated to the Cancer Council. The Car Wash will start at 11.30am until 2.30pm. Prices are very reasonable and for $8 your car will be washed and chamoised. Deluxe car wash is only $10 for wash/tyres washed with tyre shine/windscreen squeegee cleaned and a free air freshener valued at $5. We also offer other options for $2 each, that you can get separate without the car being washed, which include, windscreen cleaned/tyres cleaned. Whilst your car is being washed you can sit under the gazebo, there will be magazines provided for your pleasure. We hope to see you there! University Showcase in Maryborough Local Senior students were recently given the opportunity to explore their prospective futures at a University Showcase featuring top universities such as Bond University and Queensland University of Technology. The showcase, held at Aldridge State High School, provided students with valuable information regarding University life. From applying to University to finding accommodation. University providers and current University students illuminated the group to key skills imperative to successful studies. “It was a very informative day,” a Year 12 student commented. “I am now more familiar with the prospects for my future and the difference between school life and university life.” Local university USQ was on hand to offer students opportunities closer to home however it was Griffith University that was most popular within the group. “Many people say that University is the best time in your life and I would love to be able to enjoy that experience in a new and exciting setting such as Brisbane or the Gold Coast which can provide me with the best possible course for my career,” the student said. Brains were filled and tears were shed at RYDA’s annual youth information event held at the Maryborough Show grounds last Friday. Future and current licensed students were educated on the hazards, distractions, precautions and disadvantages of driving and the repercussions of driving dangerously. “It was a great day to learn new things and experience how quickly a life can be lost through our actions whilst we are in a car,” a Riverside student said. The day consisted of multiple sessions filled with activities and information on dangers and distractions involved with driving, car insurance, a drivers reaction time and actual stopping distance and the affects accidents can hold on the police investigation units present at accident scenes. While all the activities educated students on their future choices whilst driving it was the story of crash survivor Matt that had every participant reaching for a tissue. The 1993 accident near Bondi, NSW, which left Matt in a wheelchair and his passenger deceased, was caused from a collision with a drunken driver. “It really brought home how easily life can change for the worse, even when you are being the responsible driver,” a student said. “Receiving our license isn’t a right, it’s a privilege and it is our right to keep our lives and others on the road safe.” By Lucy Kinbacher Year 11 Senior College News 5
