“Be the best. It’s the only market that’s not crowded.”
In Years 11 and 12 our students will be allocated two periods per week of QCE (Queensland Certificate of
Education) time. During this time, students will be partaking in life skills courses and preparing for the QCS.
The Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test is a common state‐wide test for Year 12 students that measures
achievement – not intelligence or aptitude. It is grounded in Queensland senior curriculum and tests the 49
Common Curriculum Elements (http://alturl.com/zfqac). The QSA uses the data from the test to provide group
results which are used for comparing student achievement across schools and subjects. The students will
complete four test papers: one writing task, one short response and two multiple choice. It is imperative that all
OP eligible Year 11 and 12 students use their class time effectively to help to prepare them to achieve the best
possible result. Our last Rap edition included some sample questions to give you an idea of what to expect.
Here is both a Math problem and an English punctuation example.
A prize is on offer to the first correct answer to the Math problem submitted by a student at Student Reception
MATH PROBLEM:
The cost of a parachuting course consists of charge of $250 which
covers equipment hire and tuition, and a further expense of $55
per jump.
How many jumps could a person afford to do if she was prepared
to spend up to a $1000?
PUNCTUATION IS POWERFUL
An English professor wrote the words,
"A woman without her man is nothing"
on the blackboard and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.
The men wrote: "A woman, without her man, is nothing."
The women wrote: "A woman: without her, man is nothing."
Research shows that Autism now affects approximately ONE IN EVERY 160 CHILDREN
aged 6‐12 years. Autism Queensland selected the month of April as Autism
Awareness Month to help raise awareness and funds to support people living with
Autism and their families. The theme was GO BLUE FOR AUTISM.
In support of this event, a group of Year 8‐10 students baked cupcakes and covered
them with blue icing and smiley faces. On Tuesday 24 April, a group of Senior
students volunteered to sell the cakes which seemed to be enjoyed by many!
A TOTAL OF $82 WAS RAISED
Many thanks to all who supported the event by giving of their time or money.
Retelling the story. Ask your child to tell you the story he/ she
just read without looking at the book. Using these words (first,
next, then, after that, finally) will help your child to keep the
story in the correct sequence. The retelling of the story will
show you if your child understood what he/ she read.
Understanding what is read is of uttermost importance.
Point out interesting or long words in the book.
Point out sounds or sight words within the story.
Compare events in the book with your own lives. Are the
events similar or totally different from what you do?
If it is a book that has poems in it, then talk about what a
poem is.
If the story has a recipe, talk about how this is written
differently from a story. (Here’s an idea! Select a simple child’s
cookery book from the library and plan a cooking session.
Write a list of the ingredients you will need to buy when
shopping. Your child will practise their reading, learn to follow
directions and see that reading is useful and has a purpose.)
Talk about the characters in the book. Compare characters
with real people. Is there something we can learn from the
characters?
Perhaps the characters are animals, not people. Talk about how
the animals take on human characteristics.
Discuss your favourite part of the story
Encourage your child to talk about books he/ she has enjoyed
or disliked. Help your child think about why they enjoyed or
disliked the book.
Discuss favourite authors together and decide why you like
them.
HAPPY READING
Better Buddies comes to
Riverside Junior College
One of the most common forms of
violence in the lives of children is
bullying, with one in six children being
bullied each week. Bullying can have a
devastating effect on a child. In
addition, children who portray bullying
behaviours are more likely to commit
anti‐social behaviours and criminal
acts.
In Better Buddies, children in Year 1
and Year 5 buddy up and learn the
values of caring for others, friendliness,
respect, valuing differences, including
others and responsibility through
formal weekly activities and informal
interaction outside the classroom.
Better Buddies enables younger
children to feel safe and cared for
while older children feel valued and
respected.
This week we will be setting up the
Better Buddies framework between
the Year 5 students and the Year 1
students. If you are a parent of a
Year 1 student or a Year 5 student we
will inform you of your child's buddy.
We are also planning a very special
celebration as we start this program
in our College.
Year 6/7 Art Excursion
The students in Years 6 & 7 have been exploring the Elements of Art, as part of their Semester
One Art Program. 6/7M and 6/7C recently visited Alpha 31 Studio in Tinana, to learn about
sculpture (form, texture, proportion, abstraction, positive shape and negative space).
The excursion was an authentic experience for these classes, to visit a sculpture garden, an
artist’s workspace and gallery. Considering the work of others, and viewing the elements of art
within the artworks of artists, in their own community, was an invaluable experience enjoyed by
all. The students participated in a workshop, where they used clay hand building techniques to
create a 3D clay animal sculpture. Students enjoyed using their imaginations, hands and
learning about sculpture and art.
University Showcase in Maryborough
Local Senior students were recently given the opportunity to
explore their prospective futures at a University Showcase
featuring top universities such as Bond University and
Queensland University of Technology. The showcase, held at
Aldridge State High School, provided students with valuable
information regarding University life. From applying to
University to finding accommodation. University providers
and current University students illuminated the group to key
skills imperative to successful studies. “It was a very
informative day,” a Year 12 student commented.
“I am now more familiar with the prospects for my future and
the difference between school life and university life.”
Local university USQ was on hand to offer students
opportunities closer to home however it was Griffith
University that was most popular within the group.
“Many people say that University is the best time in your life
and I would love to be able to enjoy that experience in a new
and exciting setting such as Brisbane or the Gold Coast which
can provide me with the best possible course for my career,”
the student said.
Brains were filled and tears were shed at RYDA’s annual
youth information event held at the Maryborough Show
grounds last Friday. Future and current licensed students
were educated on the hazards, distractions, precautions
and disadvantages of driving and the repercussions of
driving dangerously. “It was a great day to learn new
things and experience how quickly a life can be lost
through our actions whilst we are in a car,” a Riverside
student said. The day consisted of multiple sessions filled
with activities and information on dangers and distractions
involved with driving, car insurance, a drivers reaction
time and actual stopping distance and the affects
accidents can hold on the police investigation units
present at accident scenes. While all the activities
educated students on their future choices whilst driving it
was the story of crash survivor Matt that had every
participant reaching for a tissue. The 1993 accident near
Bondi, NSW, which left Matt in a wheelchair and his
passenger deceased, was caused from a collision with a
drunken driver. “It really brought home how easily life
can change for the worse, even when you are being the
responsible driver,” a student said. “Receiving our license
isn’t a right, it’s a privilege and it is our right to keep our
lives and others on the road safe.”
News from the CHAPLAIN
RAP FROM THE CHAP This issue I thought I would point out some of the great ‘Causes for Youth’
within our local community. Within Maryborough there are many youth organisations that are worth
looking into for your children to be a part of or even as an adult to volunteer your time to support.
As I stood and watched the ANZAC Day Parade I was amazed at the opportunities for young people to be
involved in community service organisations. With a background in church youthwork I have always
been well aware of Church based youth groups that operate every week, but I also began to notice many
other organisations that also teach our young people about service to others. Here are just a few:
Emergency Services Cadets, Scouts (Cubs, Scouts, Venturers), Boys and Girls Brigade, Air Cadets, St Johns
Ambulance Cadets, as well as many church youth groups. These are all ‘Causes’ worth our time to
support and fight for, as the key element in all of these is service to others and our community. So maybe think about
giving one a go the next time your son or daughter tells you they are bored! As an adult volunteer you have the chance
to really impact the lives of young people and share some of your life experience and life lessons with the next
generation!
Emergency Services Cadets
Friday night the 27 April the Emergency Services Cadets completed the first of
many training sessions that will make up their Certificate 2 in Public Safety. Two
seasoned SES Volunteers came to train the Cadets on “Use of Ladders”. The
Cadets had a chance to use some of the SES equipment during the training, as
well as gaining some insight into the role of an SES Volunteer. Our Riverside
Emergency Services Cadets showed exemplary behaviour and it was a privilege to
be there with them. A big thanks to all Cadets and Parents. I would especially
like to thank Mr Chris Hadden for his help. God Bless, Ross Harrold.
Choir trip to Brisbane
Last week saw the College choir
(Year 8 and up) travel to take
part in the ‘Brightest and Best’
choral festival at St. John’s
Cathedral in Brisbane. We have
been hard at work learning the
repertoire since Week 2 of last
term. The music was
challenging especially as some
of it was in Latin and was all in
4‐part harmony. The choir was
200 strong bringing some of
the top schools from the
Brisbane metropolitan area
together. Also taking part was a
group of choral scholars, string
orchestra and the mighty pipe
organ. The Cathedral is the only one in the Southern hemisphere
that has a suspended ceiling and its ceiling, walls and floor are all
made from stone giving it fantastic acoustics. To sing quality music
in such a building was a truly memorable event for the students.
The event occurs every two years and we have already put our
names down for the next one! So please encourage your child to
join the choir – and maybe come along yourselves?
We are now working towards the eisteddfod with a variety of
ensembles, so if you or your child is thinking of joining – now is the
ideal opportunity!
Nominations received from students for the Positive Teacher Award.
(More nominations keep rolling in!)
Anchen Van Huyssteen ‐ I think Mrs White should be the Positive Teacher of the
year. She is a very positive and supportive teacher who does everything possible to
see her students succeed. She is also very kind and supportive outside of class and
cares for the wellbeing of all the students.
Kaitlyn Packer ‐ Mrs White should definitely be nominated for Positive Teacher of the
Year because she seriously cares about every student. She encourages everyone to do
better and to reach their full potential =]
Billie Dries ‐ Mrs Gibson, she has helped me through everything, from friendship
failures, to other troubles. Mrs Gibson deserves this award more than anybody in the
whole world!!! SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER AT THIS SCHOOL!!!!!.
Andrew Dalton ‐ Mrs White in Year 12 Biology. She was always making sure that I got
enough sleep for school when I was up late working and she would send emails out to
the class asking us if we were going along okay with the workload and if she could
help us in any way.
Mitchell Warburton – MRS BARRETT!!!
Tayla Nauschutz ‐ Mrs Gibson because she always asks me how I am and she is always willing to help no matter how big
or small the problem is. She is one of a kind, and I think she should be nominated for teacher of the year because she is
always there to talk to and she is always positive towards helping and caring for people.
So now, after 8 years, we have 9 buses and almost 600 students enrolled. We now have the capacity to carry 300 students
each day on our buses, which are mostly full. We have 8 drivers (plus relief drivers). I believe that the growth of our bus
services has very much contributed to the growth of the whole College. It is wonderful that our Principal has seen this also
and is committed to providing more, bigger and better buses for the future.”
Janita Shipp has handed over the role of Bus Co‐ordinator to Leesa Hickey, who will now be available to discuss your bus
requirements for 2012 by contact our College Reception on 4123 1031. A huge vote of appreciation goes out to Janita for
her years of service and vision for our College bus services. Janita’s role will continue on as Enrolments Registrar and Day
College Accounts Officer. We are currently seeking to employ a qualified bus driver during school term times, these will
be advertised in our Fraser Coast newspapers shortly.
COLLEGE BUSES ARE FULL
Sorry to advise that all College Buses are full at this time.
If you wish to book on a bus, please complete a blue
booking form. Your child’s name will then be placed on
a waiting list until a seat is available. We cannot put
children on buses just for one off trips.
Parents will need to arrange with family or friends to
assist them.
rubbish in different bins in order for the school to
better manage our waste. 3 bins will be available in
eating areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at
home), red top bins for garbage that can't be reused
or recycled, and small green top bins for food waste
that can be composted. Our aim is to
decrease our 'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by
recycling and composting.
Tips for Parents of Children with
Asthma
There are a few things you can do to help the
College manage your child’s asthma.
1. Provide an up-to-date colour copy of your
child’s Asthma Action Plan.
2. Tell the College and your child’s teacher
about the signs and symptoms that your
child might show when experiencing
asthma.
3. When your child is experiencing asthma
symptoms, notify the College and discuss a
course of action using their Asthma Action
Plan.
4. Provide a spacer and blue reliever
medication for your child to use at school.
Clearly label the medication and spacer
Sue Dengate began the Food Intolerance Network to raise awareness of food intolerance and
especially its effect on the behaviour of our children, as well as to provide support for those
individuals and families who find themselves navigating the world of normal food while on a
restricted diet. www.fedup.com.au
Sue is speaking in Hervey Bay on Tuesday, 15 May as part of the 2012 Fed Up Roadshow.
These presentations are a wonderful opportunity to find out more about what food intolerance is,
and how much it can help those who are affected.
Star of the Sea Catholic School Hall, Hughes Road, Hervey Bay. 6.30 ‐8.30pm.
$15 per person, including a light supper.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.events‐made‐easy.com/fedup2012
Come along and hear more about how around 50‐70% of children improved their behaviour and concentration in just
2‐weeks of additive‐free eating in each of a number of school trials. Hear how otherwise healthy diets could be
contributing to problems if there is an unknown food intolerance. Seize the opportunity to ask Sue your questions.
