THE DA VINCI MYTH VS THE GOSPEL TRUTH<br />

is universally acknowledged, even often enough by skeptics,<br />

to be a paragon of virtue, and the most noble,<br />

moral, truthful, and ethical man the world has ever seen.<br />

Even Dan Brown admits that Jesus was an “historical figure<br />

of staggering influence, perhaps the most enigmatic<br />

and inspirational leader the world has ever seen.” 123 <strong>The</strong><br />

last thing Jesus would promote would be deception,<br />

including the deception that He rose from the dead—if,<br />

in fact, He didn’t.<br />

THEORIES THAT TRY TO EXPLAIN<br />

AWAY THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST<br />

As apologist Josh McDowell points out, some theories<br />

to explain away the resurrection of Christ take as<br />

much faith to believe as the Resurrection itself. 124 He has<br />

debated the Resurrection with skeptics more than just<br />

about anyone alive. He writes:<br />

After more than 700 hours of studying this<br />

subject, and thoroughly investigating its<br />

foundation, I have come to the conclusion that<br />

the resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the<br />

“most wicked, vicious, heartless hoaxes ever<br />

foisted upon the minds of men, or it is the most<br />

fantastic fact of history.... A student at the<br />

University of Uruguay said to me: “Professor<br />

McDowell, why can’t you refute <strong>Christian</strong>ity?”<br />

I answered: “For a very simple reason: I am<br />

not able to explain away an event in history—<br />

the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” 125<br />
