Intake air routing<br />

There are two alternatives for air routing <strong>with</strong> the FSI system.<br />

Version 1:<br />

The intake-manifold flap is closed and the<br />

intake air mass thus routed over the tumble<br />

plate into the combustion chamber.<br />

This method of air routing is used for<br />

stratified charge operation.<br />

Version 2:<br />

The intake-manifold flap is opened and the<br />

intake air mass thus routed over and under<br />

the tumble plate into the combustion<br />

chamber. This method of air routing permits<br />

homogeneous operation.<br />

Such a method is referred to as air-controlled<br />

combustion <strong>with</strong> map-controlled in-cylinder<br />

flow.<br />
