I look back on my years working with talented and dedicated students and know that I am taking the Gateway spirit with me. Michele Williams Gateway Coordinator, Science Skills Center Gateway Coordinator Named Principal Michele Williams has been the Gateway coordinator at Science Skills Center HS since the program began there in 2001. Under her leadership, 100% of Science Skills Gateway students passed the English and Spanish Regents in their sophomore year, received the highest number of Regents diplomas in the school and were ranked in the top of their graduating class. She also sought to extend student opportunities. Starting in 2005, Michele worked closely with families and businesses in the community to raise over $10,000 a year in donations for the Science Skill’s first Robotics Team. But she will be stepping into new shoes as the founding principal Professional Development Update Professional development continues to be a vital part of the Gateway agenda. In November of 2007, nearly 60 NYC Living Environment and Chemistry teachers attended workshops focusing on literacy and instructional strategies. This was followed by a January session that concentrated on developing lesson models and motivational strategies in science and exploring the new math curriculum. In June, Gateway hosted another workshop for science teachers, focusing on review strategies for the science Regents to increase achievement scores and health and nutrition curriculum development. In addition, as an approved vendor for the DOE, Gateway has conducted workshops for over 200 teachers throughout New York City looking at youth development, preparing for college and careers and creating school-wide guidance plans. for the Queens High School for Information, Research and Technology (Queens-IRT), which will open in Fall 2008. Building on the Gateway model for successful collaboration, Michele brought together a group of educators, parents, students and community partners (Queens Library, Columbia University, BEE Unlimited) to design a high school that would focus on information, research and technology. Michele received an Ed.M. from Bank Street College of Education, an MA from City College of New York, and a BA from the University of Arkansas. Gateway.cuny.edu: New and Improved! During the past year, Gateway has been updating its look. With a new logo and now a new web site, Gateway will provide timely updates and highlights of the many voices that make up our community.
