RESEARCH INTERESTS<br />
- Understanding food web dynamics and trophic level energy transfer to marine mammals.<br />
- Determining food web structure and processes using biomarkers such as contaminants, fatty acids<br />
and stable isotopes in top predators such as marine mammals.<br />
- Modelling of marine mammal habitat use with satellite telemetry data and geographic information<br />
systems (GIS).<br />
- Using marine mammal health and behaviour as indices of ecosystem change and health<br />
- Measuring climate change effects on ecosystem health.<br />
- Working with community, industry and government stakeholders toward integrated resource<br />

- Studying contaminant-related health effects in beluga whales from the western Canadian Arctic<br />
using diet based study approaches.<br />
- Examining endocrine disruption to thyroid hormones and vitamin levels known to be a toxicity<br />
endpoint for persistent organic pollutants such as PCB’s.<br />
- Incorporating the effects of nutritional stress associated dietary shifts and habitat alteration.<br />

Ph.D., Zoology (2003 – 2007)<br />
- Determined beluga diet and food web structure using stable isotopes and fatty acids in the Beaufort<br />
Sea food web (that included: beluga, pelagic, benthic and estuarine fish, zooplankton and epibenthic<br />
fauna) to calculate the biotransfer of mercury to beluga up the food web.<br />
- Modelling beluga satellite tracking data to analyze movement, foraging behaviour and habitat use of<br />
sea ice and water depth using resource selection functions and GIS.<br />
- Worked in partnership with the Fisheries & Oceans Canada (Winnipeg), Fisheries Joint Management<br />
Committee, and communities of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region NT on a) youth mentoring programs<br />
and b) the organization of beluga tissue sampling, c) beluga satellite tagging.<br />
- Planned multidisciplinary projects, and participated in research design, budget proposal, training,<br />
and sourcing of outside funding.<br />
