RESEARCH INTERESTS
- Understanding food web dynamics and trophic level energy transfer to marine mammals.
- Determining food web structure and processes using biomarkers such as contaminants, fatty acids
and stable isotopes in top predators such as marine mammals.
- Modelling of marine mammal habitat use with satellite telemetry data and geographic information
systems (GIS).
- Using marine mammal health and behaviour as indices of ecosystem change and health
- Measuring climate change effects on ecosystem health.
- Working with community, industry and government stakeholders toward integrated resource
management.

- Studying contaminant-related health effects in beluga whales from the western Canadian Arctic
using diet based study approaches.
- Examining endocrine disruption to thyroid hormones and vitamin levels known to be a toxicity
endpoint for persistent organic pollutants such as PCB’s.
- Incorporating the effects of nutritional stress associated dietary shifts and habitat alteration.

Ph.D., Zoology (2003 – 2007)
- Determined beluga diet and food web structure using stable isotopes and fatty acids in the Beaufort
Sea food web (that included: beluga, pelagic, benthic and estuarine fish, zooplankton and epibenthic
fauna) to calculate the biotransfer of mercury to beluga up the food web.
- Modelling beluga satellite tracking data to analyze movement, foraging behaviour and habitat use of
sea ice and water depth using resource selection functions and GIS.
- Worked in partnership with the Fisheries & Oceans Canada (Winnipeg), Fisheries Joint Management
Committee, and communities of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region NT on a) youth mentoring programs
and b) the organization of beluga tissue sampling, c) beluga satellite tagging.
- Planned multidisciplinary projects, and participated in research design, budget proposal, training,
and sourcing of outside funding.

- Evaluated high Arctic wetlands and snowmelt water as sites of mercury methylation and sources of
