<strong>Cornell</strong> <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>Constitution</strong><br />
Article I – Name<br />
This organization shall be named <strong>Cornell</strong> <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> and hereafter referred<br />
to as <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong>.<br />
Article II- Mission<br />
The mission of the <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> is to propagate the martial art of <strong>Capoeira</strong><br />
and to further understanding of Brazilian culture. We do this by providing<br />
regular instructional classes, bringing professional capoeiristas to our campus,<br />
and participating in Batizados.<br />
Article III – Membership<br />
1. Membership is open to all members of the <strong>Cornell</strong> <strong>College</strong> and Mount Vernon<br />
communities without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or<br />
political orientation.<br />
2. Individuals wishing to be active members of the <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> must attend a<br />
minimum of one class a week during each current or previous block.<br />
Article IV – Officers<br />
1. Each position will be held for one academic year<br />
2. Officer positions include the following:<br />
1. President: The president is in charge of overseeing the club, including<br />
implementing the curriculum and club management. The president must<br />
also qualify as an Instructor. The President will act as the main contact for<br />
Student Senate and will notify the Senate Organizations Chair of changes<br />
in contact information.<br />
2. <strong>Capoeira</strong> Instructor: One or more full-time student(s) who have been<br />
recognized by a legitimate <strong>Capoeira</strong> group, more specifically <strong>Capoeira</strong><br />
Forca Rara, as attaining one level above basic cord rank, and who have<br />
trained with a professional capoeirista during the summer prior to that<br />
school year.<br />
3. Vice President of Funds: This officer acts as chief financial officer for<br />
the group and maintains a ledger. Funds will be deposited in the Student’s<br />
Activities Fund at the <strong>Cornell</strong> Business Office. This officer will also be in<br />
charge of ensuring that the club raises funds to contribute to costs for<br />
hosted events. The Vice President of Funds or designee will attend all<br />
meetings they are called to by the Chair of Organizations or Chair of<br />
Appropriations of Student Senate.<br />
4. Vice President of Communications: The communications officer will<br />
ensure that group members are updated and connected to the group and are<br />
aware of events, classes, and schedule changes. They will be responsible<br />
for communicating all events and classes to the <strong>Cornell</strong> community.<br />
5. Vice President of Community: The community officer ensures that the<br />
<strong>Capoeira</strong> club is an active member of campus, and also works to recruit<br />
new students to the club.<br />
6. Vice President of the Interwebs: The Interwebs officer will ensure that<br />
the <strong>Capoeira</strong> website will remain updated with current events and contain
supplemental information for <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> members and prospective<br />
members.<br />
7. Vice President: The Vice President will be a position nominated by the<br />
president in order to assist with the executive running of the club (and<br />
elected by a simple majority of active members during the third week of<br />
first block). If the president is ever unavailable, the vice president may<br />
temporarily act as president.<br />
Article V – <strong>Club</strong> Meetings<br />
1. The <strong>Cornell</strong> <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> will meet a minimum of twice a week the first three<br />
weeks of the block, at the times and places determined by the <strong>Capoeira</strong><br />
Instructor(s) or President.<br />
2. Students will be informed of class times and locations by email the first day of<br />
each block.<br />
3. The executive board will meet once a month to discuss club issues.<br />
Article VI – Elections<br />
1. Elections will be held during the end of eighth block of each academic year.<br />
2. In the event of a vacancy, nominations will be taken and elections will be held.<br />
3. Any officer may be removed from office by a 2/3 majority vote of all active<br />
members. Note that if a removal is to occur, it must be announced at the meeting<br />
before the removal and notice must be sent to all members.<br />
Article VII – Amendments<br />
1. Amendments may be proposed by any active member of the group. Amendments<br />
must have the approval of a <strong>Capoeira</strong> Instructor and be voted on by all active<br />
members with a 2/3 majority vote.<br />
2. Amendments will not take effect until approved by Student Senate.<br />
Article VIII – Ratification<br />
1. After approval by the Student Senate, the constitution will become effective after<br />
a majority vote by active <strong>Capoeira</strong> <strong>Club</strong> members.
