We have all been much
heartened by the first
words and actions of
our new Holy Father,
Pope Francis. Soon he
will be setting-off for
the World Youth Day
in Rio de Janeiro, and
among other places he
will visit the great shrine
to Our Lady of Aparecida. We can be sure
that he will confirm in their faith the young
people gathered from all over the world, and
encourage them to be active witnesses of the
Gospel to the world.
In 2007 the Bishops of Latin America
gathered in Brazil at Aparecida to plan a new
‘continental mission.’ This great conference
was the successor to earlier conferences held
at Medellin (Colombia), Puebla (Mexico), and
Santo Domingo - each of which produced
great documents that have influenced the
development of the post-Vatican II Latin
American Church. The main architect of
the Aparecida document was the Cardinal
