Empowering Yourselves As Homeowners Knowing your rights as a homeowner will help you effectively deal with contractors and avoid mishaps with unlicensed contractors. When you need to repair or remodel your home, the Nevada State Contractors Board has advice to help make your projects run smoothly. The NSCB recommends that you always hire licensed contractors. Each licensed contractor must have a five-digit license number. You can check a contractor’s license number by contacting the NSCB, or by visiting our website at: www.nscb.state.nv.us. All contractors are required to display their license number on all business cards, bids, contracts, letterheads, websites, vehicles and advertisements. If they don’t display or have this license number, they are probably unlicensed. We recommend that homeowners take the initiative, and get at least three bids and ask for references. Check these references to ensure the contractor’s credibility and past performance. You should obtain only written contracts and understand them before you sign anything. Do not accept verbal offers. It is important to keep a record of all payments made, and never pay in cash. If you want a pool or spa built, make sure to pay the contractor only 10 percent down or $1,000 whichever is less. As a homeowner, you have the right to file a complaint with the Board, if workmanship issues arise. You have four years from the time your project is completed to file a complaint. Complaints can be filed for both licensed and unlicensed contractors. Go to our website to download complaint forms, or call us at: (702) 486-1100. Unlicensed contractors will approach you to solicit bids. Be on the look out for high-pressure sales and contractors who demand payments in cash, or ask you to obtain or pull building permits. A contractor should never ask you to obtain building permits. To help protect people from unlicensed contractors, the NSCB has created “Homeowners Beware!” door hangers, which warn homeowners about unlicensed contractors. These door hangers are designed to be distributed throughout neighborhoods and are available free of charge to any homeowner willing to help distribute them. Please join in the NSCB campaign to help protect homeowners from becoming victims of unlicensed contractors. In the state of Nevada, it is against the law to contract without a license. The first offense is a misdemeanor, second is a gross misdemeanor and the third is a Class E Felony. The NSCB regulates licensing of contractors and has the duty to protect the health, welfare and safety of the public. The NSCB would like homeowners to empower themselves and become aware of their rights. Don’t become another victim of unlicensed contractors.
