There are over 180,000 registered charities in the
UK who have an annual income of £52 billion; each
charity supports a worthy cause, but their work
cannot continue without generous donations from
the general public.
The larger charities are continuing to make ends meet
during this difficult economic time, but it’s the smaller,
local charities that have been hit by the drop in donations
from the public as we all tighten our belts.
Understandably, charities range from helping animals,
to researching disease and all are worthy causes. When
choosing a charity, you should think about what you care
about, what makes you want to act, or even something
that may affect you or your family.
Animal rescue centres are at bursting point due to the
tough economic times; families who are now being forced
to live on less money each month, are making difficult
choices. These choices usually end up with their beloved
pet being taken to a rescue centre, or, even worse, cruelly
dumping their four-legged friend. Owning a pet is a huge
responsibility that should not be taken lightly.
At the time of going to print, the RSPCA were preparing
for another busy Christmas, as staff on the frontline would
continue to help animals while most people would still
How Do I Get Involved?
There are plenty of ways and means of aiding your charity.
Start off by contacting a charity representative and ask
them about the best ways to get involved; most will
suggest three things…
Take Part - there’s no better way to help than taking part
in a charity’s organised event. From fun days, to running,
there’s no better way to feel good about yourself, while
raising money at the same time. You can even enter into
some of the major events in summer 2012, including the
Edinburgh Marathon and The Great North run; plenty of
charities still have places available!
Donate - No matter how big or small your contribution,
charities are always grateful. You can donate towards
a fund with a one off payment, a monthly payment, or
by applying for membership, which will take hardly any
time at all. Another way of course, is sponsoring a friend,
colleague or family member who may be taking part in an
upcoming event.
Volunteer - If you feel you
have more to give, then
most organisations welcome
volunteers to help with
the running of an office or
different events. Even if it’s
just a few hours in the week
or after work, your time can
mean a lot to someone else.
So, why not get involved and
promote a positive outlook
for others and yourself!
Maesteg Animal Welfare Society
Set up to help animals when no one else would help
them. We encourage neutering of pets and will help
those who cannot afford it.
Keeping the animals at the kennels and cattery
and veterinary fees etc, cost money. None of this work could be carried out without a substantial
income. We run fundraising events as much as possible, but a lot of our income comes from
our charity shops, which are run entirely by volunteers. We have a shop located at Maesteg (our
Flagship), as well as in the Ogmore Valley. We also rely heavily on donations.
Donations welcome. Standing Orders can be set up call 01656 721496.
