St Martins House
Make Magical Music
At Newark College
St Martins House
– More Than Just A Meeting
Established almost 40 years ago in 1972, the music
instrument craft courses at Newark College offer
young and old alike the perfect opportunity to
work with their hands and learn traditional skills.
Aspire decided to have a chat with Jill Maynard
from Newark College to find out more…
Tell us about the music instrument making
courses at Newark College?
“We have four different disciplines on offer. Firstly there’s
Violin Making and Repair, which provides students with
the opportunity to also make cellos and violas, as well as
trying their hand at bow repair. This is a four year course
should students go right through from basic to advanced
level. Next is the Piano Tuning and Restoration course,
which takes three years and teaches students how to
restore and tune upright and grand pianos. The Guitar
Making course is a two year course that includes repair,
as well as how to make classic, Spanish-style guitars
and steel string guitars. Finally, there’s the Woodwind
Instrument Making and Repair course which includes
all the woodwind family, from flutes to oboes, as well
as metal bodied instruments. The aim of each course
is to equip the students with the skills and techniques
they need to make, repair or tune these instruments at a
professional level.”
What are some of the course highlights?
“In December of each year, the students on the Guitar
Making and Violin Making courses are split into teams
to compete in a 24-hour race to build an instrument.
Each team is made up of students from each level to
ensure a range of different skills. It’s always a lot of fun
and helps teambuilding and resourcefulness, as well as
encouraging students to overcome technical difficulties.
The instruments are then tested on their appearance,
construction and the sound they produce.
“At the end of the academic year, we celebrate the
success of our graduating students with an Open Day
and Evening Concert when the instruments that have
been made over the year are played by proficient and
professional musicians. These musicians are invited to
come to the college and test the instruments and choose
some to play at the evening concert. We have good
industry connections and often employers call us when
they know we have students graduating to see if we have
anyone who would fill a position within their company.”
What qualifications do students need to have
in order to be accepted onto one of these
courses?
“For the Guitar Making and the Violin Making and Repair
courses, students are required to have basic carpentry
skills and preferably a qualification. This doesn’t have
to be in music instrument making though, it can be in
cabinet making or something similar. However, the other
two courses have no entry requirements, making them
ideal for everyone. This is because the course takes them
through from a basic level to a professional standard. We
attract students from across the world, many of which
are adults looking to change their career, however these
courses are suitable for all ages.”
How do Aspire readers go about applying for
any of these courses?
“We firstly recommend that they look into the course in
more detail on our website. Once they have decided that
the course is for them, the next step would be to apply
or arrange to come and see us. They’ll be given a tour of
the college/campus and the workshops, they’ll have the
opportunity to speak to students and talk with tutors. We
ask that anyone applying for one of these courses brings
an example of something they’ve made with them, as
well as anything that demonstrates their interest in the
field. Interviews then take place from January right up
until the first day of term in September.”
Situated in the heart of Leicester’s historic quarter,
right next door to the Cathedral and the Guildhall on
Peacock Lane, St Martins House isn’t your average
conference centre. St Martins House is one of Leicester’s
best kept secrets – it boasts four conference rooms,
accommodating up to 50 delegates, and an exquisite
Grand Hall, which is ideal for wedding receptions,
birthday celebrations and corporate events of up to 200.
History
Opened in June 2011, St Martins House has always played
an important role within the community. Originally
founded as Wyggeston Hospital Boys’ School in 1877 and
built on the foundations of the much older Wyggeston
Hospital, St Martins House has undergone a £4million
refurbishment to bring it into the 21st Century.
A Grade II Listed building, St Martins House is run by the
Diocese of Leicester who bought the building in 2008
after it was vacated by Leicester Grammar School. The
historic building was saved from certain dereliction and
the Diocese have put the building to good use, serving
the city community and beyond.
The Grand Hall
The centrepiece of St Martins House, The Grand Hall
never fails to impress. Offering stunning views over the
cathedral, The Grand Hall is spacious and demonstrates
an innovative coupling of beautiful Victorian architecture
with modern lighting and AV facilities, making it ideal for
wedding receptions, celebrations and larger conferences
or corporate events. With a private bar and a purposebuilt
kitchen, The Grand Hall is one of those venues that
will blow you away once you step inside.
The Bishop’s Room
A beautifully panelled room, the Bishop’s Room offers
19th Century character combined with 21st Century
facilities for up to 12 guests.
The Kempe Room
Catering for up to 50 delegates, the Kempe Room offers
an interactive whiteboard, LCD projector, and its own
bathroom facilities, making it ideal for all-day events.
The Heyrick Room
This comfortably designed room, which was once a
classroom, caters for up to 25 and offers IT facilities of the
highest standard.
The Wycliffe Room
An ideal boardroom space for up to 50, the Wycliffe Room
boasts its own inbuilt loop system for the hard of hearing,
as well as an interactive whiteboard and lots of natural
daylight.
Much of St Martins House initial success is down to their
dynamic partnership with Hotel Maiyango, who provides
award-winning in-house catering for all events. All day
conferences start from £37 per head all inclusive and
quotes for wedding and celebration hire can be obtained
upon request. The friendly, professional and experienced
staff can also help you arrange your wedding at the
cathedral should you wish to marry there.
Book Shop
As well as four excellent conference rooms and the
breathtaking Grand Hall, St Martins House is also home
to a shop selling Christian books and resources, which is
open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and on
Saturdays from 9:30am until 4:30pm.
Revd Pete Hobson, Director of St Martins House, told
Aspire: “St Martins House is unlike any other venue in
the city centre. Not only can we provide limited parking
right outside, as well as in a commercial car park two
minutes’ walk away, we’re run as a charity, so all our profits
go back into helping the community. We don’t have any
shareholders, so every penny we make goes to fund our
outreach centre, allowing local community groups to
use it for free. This building, in one way or another, has
been serving the community for over 130 years, and we
hope to ensure its place for another 130. You don’t have
to be a Christian to make use of St Martins House – we
welcome those of all faiths, and no faith within the city,
and beyond.”
The Donaldson Centre
The Donaldson Centre provides a base for community
groups, such as The Princes’ Trust, to work with the most
vulnerable and needy groups in society, both practically
and emotionally. Any group wishing to make use of this
facility is encouraged to contact Pete Hobson to explore
the nature of the support they hope to offer to those in
most need.
Nestling among cobbled streets, St Martins House is
within a few minutes’ walk of some of the hidden gems of
Leicester’s heritage – from the Jewry Wall Museum to the
Magazine, and from St Nicholas church to the Castle.
Christmas Leftovers
What To Do With Your
Christmas Leftovers…
www.stmartinshouse.com
It’s amazing to think that the average Brit
consumes a massive 6,000 calories on Christmas
Day alone, but somehow there always seems to
be masses of food left over. We’ve roped in our
resident Chef, Neil Walker, to give us a simple yet
delicious recipe for our Christmas leftovers…
The Ultimate Turkey And Smoked Ham Stew
“I'm a bit old school when it comes to buying and cooking my turkey for Christmas Day, as in I like
to buy a whole bird - legs, wings, thighs, bones and all, rather than a turkey crown. I do this for one
reason - to make a brilliant turkey stock a couple of days later. To me, there is something soothing
about making a stock with the turkey bones and the smell reminding me of the great day I shared
with my family and friends a few days prior.
Just throw the bones, a couple of raw carrots, onions, celery sticks, bay leaves and sprigs of thyme
and rosemary into a large pan, cover with cold water, bring to the boil then turn down the heat to
low and simmer very gently for four hours. Strain. Then you have your base for this delicious stew.
I always boil up a big joint of smoked ham on Christmas Eve and use the stock from that to add to
this, which gives my stew a deep smokey flavour - although if you're not doing a joint of ham you
could just use some lardons of smoked bacon.”
Ingredients:
Approx 2 pints of stock
2 carrots, roughly chopped
2 onions, diced
3 celery stalks, chopped
1/2 swede, diced
1 fennel bulb, chopped
1 cup of peas
Leftover turkey meat
Handful of chopped ham
Leftover potatoes and parsnips (or any leftover veg)
Tablespoon D'jon mustard
Fresh herbs, roughly chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method:
1. In a large pan heat a little olive oil and fry the onions, carrots, fennel, celery and swede on a
medium heat for 5 minutes.
2. Add the stock, seasoning, mustard and leftover potatoes and parsnips, bring to the boil then
simmer gently for approx 30 minutes.
3. Add the peas, turkey, ham and fresh herbs then simmer for another 5 minutes and serve in big
bowls by a roaring hot fire.
Delicious!
If you’re impressed with this recipe from Neil, why not pop along to Appetite within Abbey Sports
& Leisure Club at 70 Slater Street (off Frog Island), Leicester, LE3 5AS to try his delicious, healthy and
seasonal menu for yourselves. If you’ve got any feedback on this recipe, nutrition questions, or ideas
you’d like to share, why not email Neil -
appetite@abbeysports.co.uk.
There are so many other things you can do with your other Christmas leftovers; we’ve created a
three-course meal from our Christmas leftovers – with the help of
www.lovefoodhatewaste.com...
Starter - Turkey Noodle Soup
Another quick, easy and warming soup for you to try. In a large pan, cook a chopped onion in a little
turkey stock for five minutes. Add more turkey stock and 50g of vermicelli noodles – after following
the cooking instructions on the noodle packet, add some chopped turkey and heat through.
Main - Bubble & Squeak
Most of us know how to make this quick and easy dish, which is delicious served with scrambled
egg and crispy bacon, or with poached smoked haddock fillets.
Dessert - Christmas Pudding Ice Cream
To make this delicious treat, mix 150ml of ready-made chilled custard and 150ml of whipped
double cream. Add in crumbled leftover Christmas pudding then freeze in a large container. Stir
every 30 minutes or so until it’s reached your desired consistency.
There are a few leftovers that you must not use after their use-by date. Food must be used before
the ‘use-by’ date, as even if it looks and smells fine after this date, it still might not be safe to eat.
Once the product has been opened, make sure you follow any instructions, such as 'eat within three
days of opening'; however, the use-by date is the most important, so even if you open a product
today and the use-by is tomorrow, you must use it by tomorrow and not in three days time.
Use-by dates are different to ‘best-before’ dates; best-before dates appear on ‘low risk’ foods, such as
dried, tinned and frozen foods and relate more to the quality of the product that its safety. So, if you
want to experience the food product at its best, eat before the best-before, but it’s still safe to eat
after this date has passed.
The only way to avoid having to be creative with your leftovers is to be good on what you buy and
only cook what you really need!
Stay Motivated
www.stmartinshouse.com
Make The Most Of Your Workout
Stay Motivated & On Track
The majority of us start the New Year with
new goals and a new focus for the coming 12
months, but did you know that, on average, we
give up on our resolutions within one month.
UK psychologists have found that planning ahead, rather
than leaving the decision on what to give up or what to
achieve until New Year’s Eve, is one of the key elements
to making your resolution a success. The study of 3,000
adults in 2007 also highlighted the part your sex plays
in how you should tackle a resolution; men should set a
specific goal, while women should tell everyone about
their resolution.
So, to aid you on your way, we’ve come up with some
reasons, means and ways to stay motivated for the five
most popular resolutions to ensure 2012 is the year you
finally make the changes your life needs…
Stop Smoking
For this resolution to be successful, you’ll require an
enormous amount of willpower. For many, habit controls
when they smoke – with the morning coffee, after a meal,
whilst walking the dog – so to break the habit, you may
need to change your routines as your willpower slides.
You need to identify your own ‘habits’ and find ways
to break them; try having your morning coffee at work
indoors, where it’s illegal to smoke, or try walking your
dog a different route so you have new scenery to look at.
Alternatively, you could try replacing your cigarettes with
something else, such as mints or chewing gum. If you’ve
tried this and it just doesn’t work, you may need to invest
in one of the many over-the-counter nicotine remedies
to help your body cope with the withdrawal slowly and
effectively.
If you’re really struggling, or have even given in to
smoking again already, there are people who can help –
you don’t have to do it alone. Visit http://smokefree.nhs.uk
for advice and to order your Quit Kit.
Get Fit
The start of a New Year always sees numerous ‘celebrity’
fitness DVDs released, so why not buy one and aim to do
it at least three times a week. Don’t go crazy to start with,
as if you’ve not exercised for years, your body will need
time to adjust, so try exercising every other day to begin
with and after a fortnight or more, you can increase this to
the recommended five times a week. Alternatively, to ease
yourself back into exercising, why not try our four-minute
workout on page 10
Once the weather brightens up, try different things, such
as a run in the park, a game of rounders or football with
the children, or even organise a day out at your local
activity centre and try canoeing, rock climbing, or raftbuilding.
Lose Weight
With the average festive weight gain standing at a buttonpopping
5lbs, your jeans are probably feeling even
tighter than before Christmas. Hopefully you’ve made
good strides in getting back to eating healthier eating
routine, but now is the time many dieters are tempted by
chocolate, cakes and crisps – all the usual bad food – so
to stay motivated, Aspire would like to suggest a reward
scheme.
You need to set a realistic weight goal – 1lb a week is
not only realistic, it’s healthier, meaning you’re more like
to keep the weight off once it’s lost – then set yourself
smaller goals; so, if you’d like to lose a stone, why not
give yourself a treat once you’ve lost 4lbs – and not a
food-related treat. Choose something that will make you
feel good, such as a manicure, a massage or even that
designer pair of shoes you’ve had your eye on! By setting
smaller goals and rewarding yourself for your success,
you’re more likely to stay motivated and actually reach
your goal!
Enjoy Life More
We’d all like to worry less and have more fun so why
not make 2012 the year you set aside a day each week
by Laura Hyde
when fun is the order of the day. This should be an
easy New Year’s Resolution to stick to – you just need
to be organised for six days of the week to enable you
to dedicate one whole day a week to fun; and, as fun
is relative to the individual, the list of fun activities is
endless. Why not enjoy a stroll around your local park,
admiring nature and the wildlife that surrounds you; or
spend an evening in catching up with your girlfriends
with some nibbles, girly DVDs and home pampering, such
as manicures, pedicures and face-packs; or get away for
the weekend with your partner, leave the kids with their
grandparents and enjoy one another’s company, away
from the daily stress of work, finances and the future.
As the saying goes ‘we never know what’s around the
corner’ so make the most of your day of fun and your
health and well-being may well improve as a result.
Quit Drinking
After all the festivities over Christmas and New Year, many
people feel the need to quit drinking to give their body,
and most importantly, their liver, a break. However, as
they say, everything in moderation, so unless you have a
health reason to quit drinking alcohol altogether, a better,
and more realistic, resolution would be to drink less.
Government guidelines recommend that women drink
no more than two to three units a day (one 175ml glass
of wine or three single vodkas), while men should keep
under three to four units (two pints of standard beer or
four single vodkas). It’s not advisable to save your units up
for consumption in one go at the weekend, so don’t feel
guilty about enjoying a glass of wine with your evening
meal, or three single vodkas on your weekly girls’ night
out – don’t overdo it and there’s no reason that alcohol
can’t remain part of your life in 2012.
Whatever your New Year’s Resolution this year, you’ll need
willpower, so stay focused on the end goal, whether that’s
to be healthier, to be a slim bride, or even to change your
career, and 2012 will be your most successful year yet!
It’s a common misconception that you can
eat what you like, as long as you exercise;
actually, it’s never more important to
eat the right foods than when you’re
exercising. Food is our fuel. An average
female adult needs to consume 2,000
calories (cals) per day, whilst the average
adult male needs 2,500, just to keep your
bodily functions ticking along as they
should.
Many people exercise to lose weight, in
which case they should also cut their
calorie in-take by 500. However, it’s hard to
know what foods to eat, within your new
calorie limits, to really get the most out of
a workout.
Burning Fat
There are several things that affect your
metabolic rate, such as exercise, the
digestion of foods, body temperature, and
hormone activity. All of these affect how
fast your burn excess fat.
There are numerous ‘fat burning foods’
that help to speed up your metabolism.
These are mainly fruit and vegetables,
because plants contain enzymes that help
your body to break down the food and
absorb the nutrients within.
Really great, natural fat burning foods
include apples, berries, broccoli, cabbage
and citrus fruits – not only do all these
foods contain Vitamin C, which burns fat
by liquefying it so the body can flush it
Make the
Most of Your
Workout
By Laura Hyde
out of your system easily, but apples and
berries also contain Pectin, which restricts
the amount of fat your cells can absorb.
Green tea will boost your metabolism.
It also contains powerful anti-oxidants,
with anti-cancer and anti-heart disease
properties.
Water cleanses the body inside and out;
it flushes out the system and removes
harmful toxins. You must drink plenty of
water for any diet of fat burning foods, or
exercise regime, to work properly. This is
because the human body consists of 70%
water and it needs replenishing daily.
Building Muscle
You might get the impression that body
builders eat everything and anything they
like, but the truth is they eat little and
often. Your body can only store so many
calories per meal, so eating extra food in
order to bulk up simply won’t work.
Your first meal of the day should be
consumed within 30 minutes of waking
up, with further meals being consumed
every three hours. It’s important not
to view these meals as a burden, but
as opportunities to fuel and grow your
muscles – imagine the next meal as a
fuller chest, bigger arms and rock-hard
abs!
It’s also important that proteins (found in
meats, fish, nuts, and some vegetables)
make up at least 35% of your overall
calorie intake. This is to ensure that you
not only increase your muscle mass, but
also keep fat levels low. Do remember
to stick to lean cuts of meat though
otherwise you’ll have to work twice as
hard to burn off the excess fat. Although
protein is an expensive food, it burns twice
as much energy as carbohydrates and
three times as much energy.
Although building muscle is really quite
simple and exciting, achieving the results
you want can take at least 12 weeks, so be
patient. You may think that building your
muscle mass will increase your weight
thanks to the common misconception
that ‘muscle weighs more than fat’, but 1lb
of muscles weighs the same as 1lb of fat,
so it’s not true that muscle weighs more.
As fat cannot turn into muscle, you’ll need
to lose the excess fat you carry before
you can start to build up your muscle
significantly (body builder style). However,
increasing your lean muscle mass helps to
speed up your metabolism, so it’s always
worth including some free weights or
toning exercises into your regime as they’ll
help give you a more toned and slim-line
figure.
If you want to lose weight, or build
muscle, our main advice is maintain a
healthy, balanced diet and exercise at least
five times a week, for 30 minutes – it won’t
be long before the compliments come
flooding in.
Exercise A - Plank
Perform for preferred time 10, 15 or 20 seconds.
Targets: core.
your forearms and toes, with your back in a straight line and your
abdominals drawn in tight, keeping you stable.
Movement: There is no movement. This is a static exercise in which
you hold this position without letting your back arch as you keep
your abdominals tight.
Rest for preferred rest time either 20, 15 or 10 seconds.
Exercise B - Squats
Perform for preferred time 10, 15 or 20 seconds.
Targets: hips, bum and legs.
motion, until your hips are level with or below your knees. As you
squat, be sure to maintain a tall posture; do not let your back round.
And keep your knees tracking over your toes; don’t let your knees
collapse inward.
Rest for preferred rest time either 20, 15 or 10 seconds.
Exercise C - T-Press Up
Perform for preferred time 10, 15 or 20 seconds.
Targets: core, shoulders, arms, and chest.
Sick and tired of overcrowded gym classes
and endless queuing for the treadmill -
don’t let a busy gym be your excuse for
not pursuing your New Year’s Resolutions.
Weight loss expert Joe Hanney knows
your frustration and has helped hundreds
of women overcome their hurdles to
weight loss with his innovative fat busting
workouts.
How to get more done, have more fun and
make an impact each and every workout,
without use of exercise equipment, just
your own body weight and not much space
to do it in. Even better it can be done in just
240 seconds (4 minutes). You’re probably
thinking how can this be?
Well...
You could now work your entire body with
one or two exercises or special exercise
combinations. Not only that, but what you
could stimulate your metabolism and fat
burning hormones to a higher degree with
an ultra-quick 240-second workout, better
than you could with that long boring one
or one-and-a-half-hour workout?
Well, you can!
In fact, with the 240 seconds, you'll discover
several different exercises (as seen in the
pictures) that when combined properly,
use everything from head to toe create the
ultimate exercise program.
Do EVEN LESS if you want to see the
FASTEST results!
Which do you think produces more fat loss
and greater fitness: jogging at the same
pace for 20 minutes, non-stop...bored
already! Or sprinting for just TEN minutes
(one minute sprint, one minute rest, repeat)
in that same 20 minute time?
Hundreds of studies show that the second
workout, where you cut the workout time
in HALF and then split that into tiny, more
intense chunks produces the greatest fat
loss and fitness gain possible.
Using the 240-second workout, you not
only burn calories faster during the actual
workout, but you KEEP BURNING FAT
with an elevated metabolic rate for up to
38-hours after each workout! Imagine that
– you worked out for 240-seconds at 9am
yesterday and the effect from the workout
means that you are actually burning
calories not only whilst you are reading this
magazine but also up to midnight tonight.
That means if you do the 240-second
workout almost daily, you have now
essentially increased your metabolism on
an almost 24/7 basis.
It doesn't matter if you've never worked
out a day in your life, if the only exercise
you get is running to the fridge, or if
you've been training for years, but want
to get better results in less time and no
waiting about. The 240-second workout is
completely adjustable:
• Beginner (new to exercise) - 10 seconds of
exercise followed by 20 seconds of rest.
• Intermediate (one or two visits to the
gym) - 15 seconds of exercise followed by
15 seconds of rest.
• Advanced (more than three times visiting
the gym) - 20 seconds of exercise followed
by 10 seconds of rest.
This programme does not involve a single
cardio machine, not because I don’t think
you have access to one, but by choice! So
no more long slow boring cardio in the fat
burning zone!!!
This total body workout, part of my
philosophy on how you should train, is to
train with a purpose. This workout gives
you exactly that – you’ll know exactly which
exercises to do, how much time to work out
and how much time to rest you should take.
Start: Assume a standard press up position.
Movement: Perform a press up, and then transfer all your weight to
one hand as you rotate your body to reach up and behind you with
the opposite hand. Keep both feet on the floor. Your arms should be
in a straight line so that your body forms a T shape. Alternate sides.
Rest for preferred rest time either 20, 15 or 10 seconds.
Exercise D - Split Jack
Perform for preferred time 10, 15 or 20 seconds. Targets: legs, bums,
stomach.
Start: Stand with your arms at your sides.
Movement: Jump and land with your left foot in front of you and
your right foot behind. At the same time, with straight arms, swing
your left arm forward toward to your right leg. Then jump again,
switching arms and legs.
Rest for preferred rest time either 20, 15 or 10 seconds.
Repeat the above one more time each.
New Year Diet Tips
www.stmartinshouse.com
Lose
The start of a new year is the traditional time to swap bad habits for brand new healthy ones, but with so many of us falling at the
first hurdle, finding an alternative way to lose inches could be the key. Everyone knows that losing weight is down to eating a little
less and moving a little more, but there’s no need to go to extremes; Aspire have come up with a few simple lifestyle changes that can
help you shift those extra pounds throughout 2012 – without starving yourself. So, forget the fad diet this New Year and
follow our easy tips instead...
Weight
Without
The Diet...
By Sarah Ross
As the bells of New Year ring out across Britain,
thousands of us will be vowing to ditch our bad
eating habits, get in shape and lose weight
during 2012. While it may be one of the most
popular New Year’s resolutions, ditching the
excess pounds takes more willpower than most
anticipate, with the majority of us reverting
back to our old habits after just six days.
According to a survey by Sheila’s Wheels, six out of
ten British women will cave in on their healthy eating
promise after less than a week. In a poll of 2,000 people,
the insurance specialists also discovered that attempts to
drink eight glasses of water daily will be ditched after six
days, while eating five-a-day falls by the wayside after just
five days.
If you’ve tried every healthy eating plan going without
success and are dreading the thought of jumping back
on the crash diet, weight loss bandwagon on 1st January,
it could be time to take a different approach to losing
weight. Research from The University of California has
highlighted that around two thirds of crash dieters will
gain more weight than they originally lost within five
years, demonstrating that making drastic changes to your
diet could leave you worse off in the long run.
Move More...
You don’t have to head to the gym in order to get your
recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise. Making a
conscious decision to ditch the car for short journeys,
walking the kids to school, getting off the bus at an earlier
stop or choosing the stairs instead of the lift can make a
big difference to your weight and your health – without
you really noticing.
Smaller Plates...
Eating from a smaller dinner plate will allow you to easily
reduce your portion sizes and research has suggested
that it may also help your brain to register when you’re
full much more quickly. Swapping a 12” plate for a 10” one
can help to significantly reduce the amount you eat.
Protein...
Many of us
mistakenly
believe that
filling up on
carbohydrates
will give us more
energy and
stop us feeling
hungry. In fact,
introducing
more protein to your diet will help keep you feeling fuller
for longer. Lean meats, eggs, fish, hummus, pulses and
beans are all great sources of protein and will help you
avoid the mid-afternoon energy slump that encourages
most of us to reach for unhealthy, sugar-laden snacks.
Healthy Snacks...
All those
cups of tea –
particularly if
you take sugar –
and biscuits
that get you
through the
working day
soon start
adding up.
Instead of
cutting out snacks altogether, swap your sugary treats for
healthy alternatives such as fruit, nuts and seeds, which
have fewer calories and less fat, and keep your biscuit
treats for Fridays only.
Eat Slower...
Taking the time to chew your food slowly and properly
can help you to eat less. If you eat quickly, without
chewing correctly, it takes your brain longer to register
that your body’s full, meaning you’ll eat more than you
need to.
Liquid Lunch...
Soup is well-known for being a dieter’s best friend, as
liquid foods have been shown to keep the stomach fuller
for longer. So, exchange your lunchtime sandwich for
soup and
try drinking
more
smoothies,
but making
your own is
advisable as
ready-made
versions
can be
laden with
salt and sugar.
Get Out and About...
Natural daylight is vital for the body as vitamin D is
produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight. A lack
of this important vitamin can cause you to feel tired,
especially during winter when there are less hours of
daylight, in turn making you crave sugary snacks and
comfort foods. Getting out and about during your lunch
hour while the sun’s shining can help you feel healthier
and happier, whilst keeping the cravings at bay, and the
exercise will also give your metabolism a boost.
Keep Hydrated...
Ditch the cups of tea and coffee in favour of drinking
more water. Most people mistake dehydration with
hunger, so
make the effort
to drink the
recommended
two litres of
water a day and
you could find
you eat less.
Drinking more
water will also
help to keep
you energised
and therefore
less likely to
raid the biscuit
tin when you’re
feeling tired.
Eat More Often...
Choosing to eat smaller meals more often will stop you
getting hungry. Don’t eat three large main meals, reduce
your portion sizes and introduce healthy snacks for midmorning
and mid-afternoon. Don’t allow yourself to get
too hungry either, as you’re more likely to crave unhealthy
foods.
Keep a Food Diary...
Most of us seriously underestimate the amount we eat
in a day. The odd square
of chocolate, crusts
from the kid’s
sandwiches and
hidden calories in
drinks all start adding
up without us even
realising. Making a
note of what we eat
and when can give us
a more realistic idea
of what we’re really
consuming and as a
result, help us to alter
our eating habits.
Eat Breakfast...
Crash dieters often
fall into the trap of
skipping breakfast
and thinking they’ll
get away with it.
In fact, it’s proven
that those who
choose a healthy,
balanced breakfast
are more likely to
make healthier
choices for the rest
of the day. Porridge
is an ideal breakfast
choice as it is a
slow releasing food,
keeping you going
until lunchtime,
while research has
revealed that starting the day with two eggs can help you
consume 400 fewer calories over the rest of the day.
Treat Yourself...
Going to extremes is a sure-fire way to set yourself up
for a fall, so instead of vowing to never touch chocolate,
crisps and biscuits again, aim for a healthy, balanced diet
that incorporates treats in moderation. To cut down your
sugar and fat intake further, choose smaller portions or
healthier options than you would normally by swapping
crisps for their baked alternatives and smaller versions of
your favourite chocolate bar.
So, don’t struggle with a crash diet throughout 2012, making
just a few simple changes can help you stick to your New Year’s
resolution and shift those unwanted pounds successfully.
Success Stories
Each week, Aspire strive to bring you the best companies
we can find; we scour the length and breadth of the country
looking for businesses that offer excellent customer service,
great value for money and a top-class product. Over the
last 12 months we’ve discovered some of Britain’s best
companies, from local services to national businesses, and
are eager to share them with you.
There are many aspects that make these companies stand
out above all others. From excellent customer service to
tailor-made guidance and advice, outstanding products to
enjoyable shopping experiences, the businesses that we’ve
found can deliver it all.
Finding these well-established companies, which offer this
level of service, can be difficult, especially in these tough
economic times. So many companies are suffering and with
many big names having already gone into administration,
disappearing from our High Streets for good, it can be hard to
know who to trust with your money.
The companies within this feature have had a great 2011
and are pressing onwards and upwards to make 2012 bigger
and better. Going the extra mile for all of their customers
and promising a truly personalised experience, the range of
companies featured within these pages guarantee that the
experience you have with them will stand out from the rest.
In fact, we’re confident that you’ll be so impressed, you’ll be
eager to recommend them to your friends and family.
Editor, Claire Tipton, says: “Here at Aspire, we believe it is
important to highlight the companies and
services that really matter to our readers, which
is why we regularly celebrate those that offer
something special. Recognising that good value
for money, excellent customer service and high
quality goods are three of the most important
factors our readers look for in a company, we
strive to find businesses that offer all three and
work exceptionally hard to tailor our advertising
to our readership. We’ve had a great 2011 and
the companies within this feature are sharing in
our success, as we’re sharing in theirs.”
Aspire always strive to support independent
businesses and specialist services because
we believe there are many advantages to
choosing these over their large, multi-national
counterparts. With an independent company
you will never be treated like just a number
because they value your custom and support, so
why not make 2012 the year you look at goods
and services from your local, independent
businesses before opting for a large chain. Not
only do Aspire believe that you’ll get a better
service, but you’ll also be keeping your hardearned
cash in the local economy, securing jobs
and futures for years to come.
herd make a distinct impression on the alpaca world.
Madeleine’s alpacas are all registered with the British
Alpaca Society. They have quickly become one of the
best in the South East, making them a great investment.
The Hurst Alpacas’ story began in 2005, when Madeleine
and her husband decided they wanted a herd animal to
help manage their 26-acre farm. It was decided alpacas
were the perfect choice and the couple welcomed
a small herd of five, which included three pregnant
females and two castrated males.
The Hurst herd now ranks at 50. It has taken a lot of
learning for Madeleine to become the alpaca expert she
is today. Like anyone wanting to keep alpacas, she had
to put in a lot of hours researching and learning about
the best ways to care for and improve her herd.
Madeleine explains: “When I first started, I read a lot of
books on the subject. I would suggest that this a good
place to start for those interested in keeping alpacas. I
was also grateful to receive a lot of support and advice
from the breeder I purchased my first alpacas from,
holidaymakers who aren’t restricted to
getting away during the school holidays;
holidaymakers who are looking for
somewhere they can relax and enjoy life at
a slower pace.”
All the hotel’s bedrooms are en-suite and
provide unrivalled comfort, as well as TV/
DVD with Freeview and a hospitality tray.
Each family suite comprises two bedrooms
and a bathroom, whilst the superior suite
boasts a double bedroom, bathroom, twin/
bunk bedroom and sitting room.
Accommodation is provided on either
B&B or dinner, bed and breakfast basis,
providing guests with the opportunity to
sample the region’s local produce, from
vegetables and fish to meat and eggs.
As well as a TV lounge and small library, The
Bulstone also boasts a well-stocked bar for
a relaxing drink after a long day exploring
the area, which boasts attractions and
activities for all ages and interests.
Not just a hotel, The Bulstone aims to be a
Madeleine now breeds her Huacaya alpacas
to sell and has had a lot of success with her breeding
programme during 2011. She currently has five young
quality males for sale. Madeleine says: “We’ve also had
eight crias this year, three of which were fathered by
one of our homebred stud males. I’m currently watching
how they develop. Hopefully, some of the males will
become stud males in the future.
Recognising Madeleine’s great effort to breed excellent
alpacas from the best bloodlines, Aspire recently
selected the breeder for our Certificate of Recognition
for Quality Breeding.
Madeleine also owns a flock of around 20 Balwen Welsh
Mountain Sheep. They are a rare breed which was
nearly wiped out in 1947. This year they produced 25
lambs. Some of the lambs have been sold locally but she
also kept some of the lambs to secure fresh breeding
Helping Dogs In Need
Despite being fondly referred to as man’s best friend, the
dogs that arrive at Shropshire’s Birch Hill Dog Rescue have
often seen the dark side of human nature, leaving the
dedicated charity to put right what man has done wrong.
Every day sees more and more dogs arriving at the centre,
but with the monthly cost of kennel and veterinary care
amounting to £6,000, Birch Hill are struggling to provide
these badly treated canines with the care they deserve.
Located in Cleobury Mortimer, Birch Hill is a devoted dog
charity, taking in any canine in need from anywhere in the
country. Sadly, the rescue centre witnesses the aftermath
of human cruelty on a daily basis, as founder, Jutta
Patterson explains: “I’ve seen some horrible sights over
the years and you would struggle to believe what some
people have done to their own dogs; we have one that was
stabbed by its owner and another whose nose was wired
shut. I feel the services we offer are one small way to put
things right and the Birch Hill Dog Rescue always aims to
be on the dog’s side and be there when they need us. We
rely on dogs for so many things – as blind dogs, sniffer
dogs and for search and rescue – so it’s about time we
repaid them.”
Dog lover Jutta, established the charity after realising how
many of our four-legged friends were finding themselves
homeless through no fault of their own. Jutta explains:
“I originally bought the kennels in 1996 and 10% of our
work was dedicated to caring for rescue dogs from other
charities. Eventually, the rescue dogs took over and in 2001
I decided to transform the kennels into a dedicated rescue
centre, before becoming a registered charity 18 months
ago. We have a non-destruction policy and we never
differentiate between breeds. We take in any dog, from
anywhere in the country, and will do whatever we can to
provide the loving home they deserve.”
In order to continue their good work however, they
desperately need your help and support; it costs £6,000
every month to care for, feed and re-home the hundreds
of dogs that find their way to Birch Hill, which is why they
would be well-deserving of your goodwill this Christmas
and throughout 2012.
For someone who adores dogs of every breed and every
age, it shocks Jutta how many people are willing to give up
their beloved pets, she says: “We have a non-destruction
policy and we never differentiate between breeds. We
take in any dog, from anywhere in the country, and will
do whatever we can to provide the loving home they
deserve. The majority of dogs come to us because of
over-breeding, particularly in the bull-type dogs, which is
sadly something that could easily be changed if owners
took more responsibility for their pets. There are, however,
many other reasons that lead to a dog ending up at Birch
Hill and all are as sad as the next; financial hardship is quite
a common one, as is neglect. For some owners, the arrival
of a new child makes them worry about how the dog will
react and for that reason they are willing to give them up,
often before they’ve even tried to introduce them. At this
time of year, we also see families who have decided to
abandon their old dogs in favour of a brand new puppy for
Christmas.”
Soaring costs of veterinary bills and dog food have made
times incredibly tough for Birch Hill, but the team are
working hard to help our four-legged friends in need. If
you want to give a dog a home or help towards their care
and kennel boarding, there are many ways you can make
a difference. You can sponsor one of Birch Hill’s loveable
dogs from just £1 a week, sign up to make a monthly
donation, leave a legacy in your Will or make a donation
on behalf of a loved one this Christmas. Alternatively, you
could donate any unwanted items, from clothes to books,
household goods to toys, to Birch Hill’s brand new charity
shop at 12 Reindeer Court, Worcester, or donate just an
hour of your time every week to take the residents for
walkies.
To make a bigger difference to the life of a dog, you could
choose to share your life with one, as Jutta explains: “We
are always looking for people who want to re-home a dog
and have many who would make the perfect companions.
Many of the dogs who are seeking new homes can be
found on our website, complete with a small biography,
photos and YouTube video.”
Firmly believing that some dogs deserve to be treated
better, Jutta is urging pet lovers to get in touch and show
their support, she adds: “I would ask people to support us
because we are trying desperately hard to put right what
man’s done wrong, but we can’t do it on our own.”
Inspired by Jutta and the Birch Hill team’s enduring
love for the animals they rescue and the lengths they
go to in order to find the homes they deserve, Aspire
recently selected the organisation for our Certificate of
Recognition for Animal Charity of the Year.
Aspire Sales Executive, Barbara Stone, nominated the
charity for the award, she said: “Jutta and Birch Hill’s
dedication is clear to see; they fight a never ending battle
to find loving owners who can give a dog the warm and
caring environment they need in which to live out their
natural days. Birch Hill Dog Rescue never discriminate
between breeds, sex or age, meaning they have to find
hundreds of homes for the dogs they take in every single
year. It’s an extremely expensive job, made tougher by
the current economic climate, so by selecting the charity
for this Certificate of Recognition, Aspire are aiming to
raise their profile and help them find the support they so
rightly deserve.”
Our Certificate of Recognition isn’t the only accolade
Birch Hill have scooped this year; in August the charity
was named top rescue facility in the West Midlands by
RescueReview.co.uk, after pet-lovers nominated Birch
Hill for the title with glowing five-star reviews.

Cassie’s Story...
Helping Unwanted Pets
In 2012
20 ASPIRE
Hi, my name is Cassie and I owe my life to Birch Hill; for the rest of my new life I will
never be able to repay them for the care, love and attention they have spent on me.
Birch Hill took me in just a few months ago, even though they didn’t have enough
space for me. They were the light at the end of my tunnel when other rescues
turned me down. I felt very ill and I was bleeding from my rear end, they took me to
the vets straight away and I was told I needed to settle in first and then I would be
spayed in two weeks. That very night I got worse, in the morning they found me in
a pool of blood and I felt very weak; I was rushed to the vets and operated on in an
emergency, I had severe Pyometra.
Nobody knows just what kind of a life I have had to endure. I was made to breed
and have some litters of puppies and so I didn’t fight against it, I had my nose tied
up with wire. This hurt very much and cut into the tissue on my nose, which has
now been damaged, it looks like I still have a band around it – I guess I won’t be
entering any beauty contests anymore. A secret I kept under wraps all this time was
suddenly let out whilst I was at the vets – you see I have a hole right through the
centre of my tongue and nobody can work out how it got there. Only I know and I
don’t want to talk about it, it’s too distressing.
What I have had to live with I wouldn’t wish on any other dog, but now I have to
look forward because my life has changed and I was lucky enough to be given a
second chance.
Britain has always been a nation of animal lovers but
according to survey results released earlier this year
by Mintel, the number of households with dogs has
overtaken those with cats, with nearly a quarter of UK
households (22.9%) having a dog, a rise of 2.1% in the
last five years. This increase is being credited to the
rising popularity of smaller breeds, possibly because
of their association with celebrities and top designers
with Vivienne Westwood and Ben de Lisi creating
outfits for our canine friends.
The benefits of owning a pet are enormous; they can
help to keep you happy and healthy both physically and
mentally. In fact, research has shown that pet owners
are much healthier than those who do not to care for
an animal. According to the Pet Health Council, studies
have shown that those who own pets have lower levels
of cholesterol and lower blood pressure (http://www.
pethealthcouncil.co.uk/About-Us/People-and-Pets-Stress-
Busting.html).
However, tough economic times have led to a shocking
surge in the number of pets being abandoned, according
to one leading animal charity. National animal welfare
organisation, Blue Cross, have recently announced a
dramatic leap in their rescue figures, which are thought to
be as a result of families struggling to find the cash to care
for them. The number of stray or abandoned pets taken in
by Blue Cross so far this year stands at 1,530, an increase
of almost 50% compared to 2010’s figure of 1,027.
Sadly, Blue Cross isn’t the only animal charity bursting at
the seams with unwanted pets, due to people finding the
financial strain of owning a pet unmanageable. Londonbased
rescue centre, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, has
also reported they’ve taken in 91 animals as a result of
their owners being unable to afford them, compared to
42 last year. The charity has also noted the number of
pregnant animals coming into their care has rocketed in
recent times.
Aspire have discovered that this is having a devastating
impact on animal charities across the country, many of
which are small, independent organisations who are
struggling for survival. Over the last three years, charity
donations have dropped significantly, making caring
for an overwhelming number of animals even harder
on a shoestring budget. There are thousands of small
organisations who work tirelessly to provide these critters
with the food, shelter and loving care they need and
deserve – but they can’t do it alone.
They need your help.
Whether it’s a monetary donation, tins of pet food or
There are over 180,000 registered charities in the
UK who have an annual income of £52 billion; each
charity supports a worthy cause, but their work
cannot continue without generous donations from
the general public.
The larger charities are continuing to make ends meet
during this difficult economic time, but it’s the smaller,
local charities that have been hit by the drop in donations
from the public as we all tighten our belts.
Understandably, charities range from helping animals,
to researching disease and all are worthy causes. When
choosing a charity, you should think about what you care
about, what makes you want to act, or even something
that may affect you or your family.
Animal rescue centres are at bursting point due to the
tough economic times; families who are now being forced
to live on less money each month, are making difficult
choices. These choices usually end up with their beloved
pet being taken to a rescue centre, or, even worse, cruelly
dumping their four-legged friend. Owning a pet is a huge
responsibility that should not be taken lightly.
At the time of going to print, the RSPCA were preparing
How Do I Get Involved?
There are plenty of ways and means of aiding your charity.
Start off by contacting a charity representative and ask
them about the best ways to get involved; most will
suggest three things…
Take Part - there’s no better way to help than taking part
in a charity’s organised event. From fun days, to running,
there’s no better way to feel good about yourself, while
raising money at the same time. You can even enter into
some of the major events in summer 2012, including the
Edinburgh Marathon and The Great North run; plenty of
charities still have places available!
Donate - No matter how big or small your contribution,
charities are always grateful. You can donate towards
a fund with a one off payment, a monthly payment, or
by applying for membership, which will take hardly any
time at all. Another way of course, is sponsoring a friend,
colleague or family member who may be taking part in an
upcoming event.
Volunteer - If you feel you
have more to give, then
most organisations welcome
volunteers to help with
the running of an office or
different events. Even if it’s
just a few hours in the week
or after work, your time can
mean a lot to someone else.
So, why not get involved and
promote a positive outlook
for others and yourself!
It’s always been the British dream, to own your own
home, but with the average first-time buyer aged
33, that dream is becoming increasingly difficult.
New figures released in December show that nearly
two-thirds of first-time buyers receive financial help
from parents to get on the property ladder. Since the
housing market crash and subsequent recession in
2007/08, these first-time buyers have struggled to save
deposits large enough AND secure a mortgage.
It’s not just first-timers that have been affected though.
Homeowners looking to move up the property ladder
have struggled with negative equity and a lack of
buyers, whilst those looking to downsize as part of their
retirement plan have been let rattling around in houses
much too large – no one has escaped the housing slump
unscathed.
The arrival of a new year always inspires homeowners to
get stuck into the DIY around their homes that they’ve
been putting off. In fact, research carried out by Halifax
last January claims that around three in ten people
embark on a DIY home improvement project with the
arrival of a new year. The most common project is the
most simple – giving rooms a fresh lick of paint, but 37%
will look at fixing things that are broken.
However, for those with nine-to-five jobs, completing
everything can be a hard task. Time, and sometimes
money, restricts what can be achieved. If this is the case,
why not call in the professionals and let them handle the
stresses and strains of making your dream home a reality.
A 2011 survey of estate agents carried out by Rics
discovered that many homeowners were considering
making home improvements in order to beat the housing
market slump. The lack of mortgage approvals since 2008
has created an ‘improvements culture’, as homeowners try
to curb their disappointment at not being able to move
up the property ladder. Rics discovered that the best ways
to increase the value of your home was with the addition
of another bedroom, closely followed by a new kitchen or
bathroom.
Don’t forget about the finishing touches that transform
a house into a home though. Cosy cushions, beautiful
blinds and personal photos, as well as meaningful
mementos all make a house yours.
Spring and the arrival of the warmer weather may seem
like a long way off but it’ll be here before you know it.
Creating an outside space to dine and even barbecue
during the summer is the easiest way to not only add
value but to create another room for your enjoyment.
Simple decking or a paved area with a table and chairs
can create that extra space you crave.
If you have a small garden and don’t know how to make
the most of the space, the best thing to do is enlist the
services of a professional garden designer. They can help
you achieve the look you want and on your individual
budget, no matter how big or small.
If you’re one of the thousands of homeowners hoping
2012 will finally be the year you move house, we have a
few tips to ensure your house attracts buyers by reaching
its true potential:
• If you’re using a bedroom as a playroom or for storage,
clear it out and dress it as a bedroom so potential buyers
can see the potential.
• The start of a new year is the perfect time to de-clutter.
Throw out any broken toys and donate and unwanted
gifts or old toys to your local charity shop and you’ll declutter
in no time.
• First impressions count, so don’t forget about kerb
appeal. Place some planted up containers to add a muchneeded
splash of colour to the front of your house during
the cold winter months.
Curtain Tracks : Tried & Tested
Now that the festive season is almost over for another
year, many of us will turn our attention to updating and
redecorating our homes. Armed with 25 years’ experience,
Martin Mawby Curtain Tracks have the knowledge and
experience to transform any home. Boasting a full list of
nationwide services, including the design, manufacture
and fitting of curtain tracks, poles and blinds, this one-man
outfit has the enthusiasm and eye for detail that can really
make a difference.
Whatever the room and whatever the window, Martin’s
expertise allow him to offer practical advice based on your
budget and décor, he says: “To ensure you have a brand
new look for your lounge or dining room there have to be
definite visual changes, but these need to be thought out
and planned, as no doubt there will be restraints, such as
budget. We can find the right products to fit in with the
budget you have available, as we have a huge range of
suppliers who have quality products at very reasonable
prices, without compromising on style or materials.
Many of the curtain tracks and poles are manufactured
by us, so we’re able to keep the costs down. It’s all about
being competitive and spending time going through my
suppliers’ ranges to find the right product that will tick
all the boxes and keep within the budget. Curtain tracks,
poles, and blinds fitted correctly by us will be securely fixed
in the right place to complement the curtains.”
So, this DIY-season, take advantage of Martin’s expertise and experience
by calling 01455 556615 or 07715 753937 for a competitive quote.
Aspire Sales Manager, Stacey Wragg, recently had blinds
fitted by Martin and his team in her kitchen, bathroom
living room and dining room. She said: “Martin was very
friendly and completely professional when he visited my
home to provide me with a quote. Rather than try to push
high-end products on to me, like other tradesmen have in
the past, Martin was very aware of my budget and stuck to
it, even offering alternative solutions that were more costeffective
and of a higher quality than my own ideas. I told
Martin what I wanted and he took it from there, coming
up with the perfect scheme to complement each room. He
went above and beyond the call of duty too; when taking
down my old curtain poles in the dining room some of the
plaster came away as it’s an old house. Martin wasn’t fazed
though, he simply re-plastered the area at no extra charge.
I was also pleasantly surprised at how efficient and clean
Martin and his team were – I’d highly recommend Curtain
Tracks to my friends and family, as well as Aspire readers
looking to update their homes this January.”
Recognising Martin’s vision, drive and passion to make a
difference to every domestic and commercial property,
Aspire recently selected Curtain Tracks for our Certificate of
Recognition for Quality and Service 2011.
Baby Boom 2012
Oh Baby Baby…
Every mother wants only the best for their child,
especially first time mothers. Organising everything
for your new arrival can be a stressful time: ensuring
you have the highest quality, safest and most practical
products can take a lot of time. But by organising
your time effectively, your pregnancy and child’s early
months will run smoothly.
Create a ‘to-do’ list and leave plenty of time to get everything on
it done, at least two weeks before your due date. This to-do list
doesn’t just have to contain baby-related jobs; make a list of all
those small jobs around the house that you’ve been putting off,
such as fixing door handles and painting rooms, and work your
way through them, but don’t start any ambitious projects as they
may over run and cause unnecessary stress.
During your pregnancy, it’s vital to take care of yourself, so eat a
healthy diet, aiming for five portions of fruit and veg, as well as
a range of dairy products, dark green leafy
veg, beans, pulses and wholegrain cereals
for their zinc, b vitamins, folic acid and
calcium. However, don’t eat for two – it’s a
common mistake to consume more than
you need to because you’re pregnant, but
you actually only need an extra 300 calories
maximum during your third trimester (after
week 24).
The hard work really begins once your baby
arrives, but the worry doesn’t end when the
seemingly endless cycle of feeding, sleeping
and nappy changing does.
It is always difficult to trust other people
to look after your child, but there are
many companies out there with excellent
reputations. The right environment,
excellent carers and specialist equipment are all vital qualities to
look for when considering childcare provision. But how do you
narrow down the huge list of companies and find someone who
you can really trust?
Finding the perfect nursery school to encourage your child, and
develop existing skills, is difficult. However, the effort will be
worth it; by choosing high quality care before your child goes to
school, you’ll be putting them in good stead for school life. There
are numerous nurseries in the Aspire region that not only look
after your child while you’re out at work, but also educate them,
enabling your child to be one step ahead of their classmates once
they reach the classroom. They’ll also take care of your child as if
they were one of their own.
As time passes by so fast, remember to cherish your
children and enjoy each stage of their growth
After the hard work, we at TinyTalk believe that
social time is very important and through our
classes, we see many parents make friends.
TinyTalk is suitable from birth, although a
baby will not sign back to you until around
6-months-old. We also run Toddler Talk
sessions for toddlers from 18 months,
encouraging them to say words as well as use
signs and join in the songs with us.
We are able to train nurseries and child care
professionals and it is our vision to get as
many babies and children signing as possible.
With the festive seasonal almost over for another year,
knowing what to buy your loved ones for birthdays,
Each hamper is tailored to the customer and their
the same. Each one is unique, a one-off. Tarj sources
all the products herself, using trusted and established
for any event, but the main bulk of my customers want
bespoke hampers for birth through to one-year-old.
Everything I do is totally unique and I spend a lot of
time sourcing the perfect products to include. I like to
talk with my clients a few times before I actually buy
anything to include within their hamper, just to ensure
I have the right feel for the character of the person the
hamper is intended for. I don’t really include anything
the High Street; I source the products from the Internet,
local shops and I even visit Greenwich market to find
exclusive and distinctive pieces. I strive to make each
hamper different, as well as the perfect present.”
With bespoke hampers starting from £90, Tarj also
Be A Bonnie Bride
In Bonnie Scotland
Unless you have unlimited funds, chances are your
wedding day will have to be done on some sort of
budget. If your budget doesn’t stretch to the UK
average of £18,500 (http://www.weddingsday.co.uk/
your planned monthly wedding savings, can be put
Despite its small size, Scotland is a diverse country with
a wealth of stunning venues in which to tie the knot. In
fact, you can actually get married practically anywhere in
Scotland, including on top of a mountain, on the lakeside
of a romantic loch or on the sparkling white sands of a
Then for the evening’s entertainment, what better
“Adding Distinction to Any Occasion”
Scotland is Gretna Green, just across the border from
England. Gretna Green first became popular as a wedding
destination for runaway couples from England in the
1750s, when Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act was passed in
England; it stated that if both parties to a marriage were
not at least 21-years-old, then parents had to consent to
the marriage. However, this Act did not apply in Scotland,
and as Gretna Green is the first village many couples
came across once crossing the border into Scotland from
England, hundreds of thousands of weddings were held
there. The Old Blacksmith's Shop, built around 1712, and
Gretna Hall Blacksmith's Shop (1710) became, in popular
folklore at least, the focal tourist points for the marriage
trade. It’s still possible to tie the knot at the world-famous
Blacksmith’s Shop.
Scottish Wedding Traditions
As well as an endless array of venues across Scotland, there are also many
traditions that take place at Scottish weddings, including:
• A sixpence in the bride's shoe or a sprig of heather hidden within the
bouquet – for good luck.
• As the bride steps into the car, it is a tradition for her father to throw a
handful of coins for any children in attendance to collect. This practice,
called a scramble, is believed to bring financial luck.
• The traditional dance Lang Reel which sees villagers and the wedding
party begin dancing from the harbour, continuing through the village as
each couple leave the reel when they pass their home. This continues until
the only couple left are the bride and groom who have the last dance.
• The traditional Grand March is often the first dance to take place at a
Scottish wedding. It begins with the bride and groom marching to the
sound of bagpipes or a live band. As they march, the maid of honour (or
chief bridesmaid) and best man join in, followed by both sets of parents
and finally by all willing guests!
• A 'second night' is normally held the night following a wedding - where
people can enjoy another night of drinking and dancing!
backburner. I joined up with my friend who had his
own production company and worked alongside him
for six years before deciding to set up Viewpoint on my
own. That was 11 years ago and I have never looked
back since.
Viewpoint DVP offers three pre-arranged packages,
ranging from £550 to £995 and also a customisable
option.
• Silver – coverage includes establishing shots of
the wedding venue, plus the arrival of guests, the
bridal party and ultimately the bride. The ceremony (if
permitted), the formal photos and guest interaction.
Arrival at the reception venue, the receiving line - if
applicable, the bride and groom’s entrance to the
wedding breakfast room and finally the cutting of the
cake.
• Golden – all of the above, plus speeches, any top
table presentations and the first two or three dances
for the evening reception.
• Platinum - everything filmed with two cameras
instead of one, allowing much more creative filming
and editing, resulting in something with a real ‘wow’
factor. The package also includes Personal Messages
and a separate HD stills disc of around 150 images.
Graeme added: “I would like to encourage more
couples to put videography of their wedding
day higher up their priority list; it should be up
there alongside photography. The filming should
complement your photographs and should be a
“must have”, but many couples see it as a luxury item,
Pentland Lodge
Pentland Lodge House blends the spacious luxury of
old style rooms with contemporary style and modern
facilities. As a family-run business, we seek the highest
something to only be booked if the budget allows.
However, videography captures so much more
than photography alone; it captures the ceremony,
including the vows, and the speeches word-for-word,
meaning you can re-live those precious memories
over and over. Your wedding day goes so fast, yet you
put so much time and effort into planning it down to
the smallest detail, it’s worth capturing it for posterity.
I’ve had so much positive feedback from couples who
have received their DVD’s, or Blu-ray disc’s, and are over
the moon, not just at how the day has been edited
together, but also the array of things captured on film,
especially the things that happened when the bride
and groom weren’t around.
“I think we offer an excellent service and a high-end
product for a very reasonable price; our attention
to detail is second-to-none and we’re able to offer
something a little different, ensuring your wedding
DVD isn’t like anyone else’s – it’ll be totally unique to
you”
An Unforgettable Experience
In The Cairngorms
There are lots of amazing places in the UK which all
have something special about them, but Britain's largest
National Park, the Cairngorms, offers an unforgettable
experience that’s not to be missed. The mountains that
have given the Park its name have not only shaped the
people, culture, natural heritage, scenery and character
of the area, but they also attract tourists from all over the
world - 1.4 million to be exact.
The Cairngorms is Britain's highest and most massive
mountain range, sealing its legendary status for outdoors
enthusiasts. As a mecca for those who love the outdoors,
the Cairngorms has an array of activities on offer on the
mountain, down in the valley, on the golf course or on
your bike; there is something for everyone.
Whether it’s on the mountain, down in the valley, on
the golf course or on your bike, there’s a multitude of
exhilarating activities that can be enjoyed here, whatever
the weather. Three of Scotland’s five ski centres are within
the Park: CairnGorm Mountain near Aviemore, Glenshee
near Braemar and the Lecht 2090 near Tomintoul all boast
exceptional pistes, as well as modern facilities.
However, in warmer months, the mountains can still
be enjoyed, with an array of mountain biking, walking
or even wildlife spotting opportunities on offer. Most
people are so enchanted by their surroundings whilst in
the Cairngorms, a walk is a must; follow footpaths across
every landscape available, from moor and woodland,
riverside to loch edge and even beautiful farmland.
If adrenaline pumping activities aren’t your thing, a visit
to the Cairngorms is still a must, thanks to the numerous
castles and distilleries just waiting to be explored. Famous
for its malt whisky trail through Speyside, as well as the
Cairngorm Brewery company, who produce traditional,
award-winning ales, the Cairngorms is a must for whisky
lovers. If you’d rather walk in the footsteps of our Scottish
ancestors, there are numerous sites that tell the stories
of Royal fueds and bloody battles just waiting to be
seen. Highland traditions are also still very much alive in
amongst a rich cultural heritage.
With ancient pine forests, arctic mountain tops, lochs,
rivers and moorland, the Cairngorms contain some of the
best wildlife habitats in the UK; in fact the region is home
to a quarter of the UK's threatened species.
Nowhere else in the British Isles can visitors enjoy such a
collection of outstanding environments in one place, in
such a variety of different ways. For more info on holidays
Winter is a great time of year to experience the thrill
of a skiing or snowboarding break. Although there
are numerous excellent places around the world
that offer challenging piste runs, Aspire would like to
recommend the variety of natural terrain, as well as
the stunning scenery of Scotland.
Scotland easily rivals The Continent for excellent skiing
and snowboarding opportunities and as the snow begins
to fall, the Cairngorms National Park becomes the top
destination for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.
Situated within the Cairngorms, Glenshee Ski Centre
offers excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities in
central Scotland, just off the A93. Boasting an impressive
23 lifts (three of which are chair lifts) and 36 runs totalling
40km, Glenshee caters for skiers and snowboarders of all
abilities; it’s now the largest ski centre in the UK.
Stewart Davidson from Glenshee told Aspire: “Glenshee
was established in 1961 by members of the Dundee
Ski Club and has evolved naturally over the years into
the ski centre you see today. We offer something for
everyone, from invitingly easy to the surprisingly steep
and our longest piste run is 2km. To ensure as much
piste time as possible, we have the facilities to make
20,000 square metres of artificial snow, enabling visitors
to make the most of their time here. Last winter, we had
an exceptional season, with snow fall in mid-November
right through to Easter. However, our usual winter season
lasts from late December until March; anything outside of
these months is a bonus. During the skiing season, we are
open from 8:30am until 5pm every day, seven days a week
and we have everything you need right here onsite.”
Covering 2,000 acres, Glenshee (Gaelic for ‘Glen of
the Fairies’) provides the most extensive skiing and
snowboarding in Scotland, over four mountains and three
valleys. It offers challenging slopes as well as nursery
slopes for beginners.
As well as 40km of runs onsite, Glenshee also boasts
three restaurants – two on the pistes and Base Café at the
bottom of the hill, making it an ideal meeting place – ski
hire – hiring everything for adults and children, from skis
and boards, to boots and jackets – and a shop, which
sells a variety of skiing and boarding accessories. There
is also a ski school onsite offering tuition for skiers and
snowboarders of all abilities.
Stewart added: “Glenshee Ski Centre flanks the highest
public road in Scotland, at 650m (2132ft) above sea level,
which runs through the Cairnwell pass, formerly one of
the main historic drive routes from the Highlands to the
Lowlands. This means that Glenshee is pretty unique;
it has access onto the piste directly from the road. Plus,
we’re pretty centrally located making us easy to get to
from anywhere in Scotland. We’re also the most southerly
Scottish ski centre, making us the ideal destination for
skiers and snowboarders from the Aspire region.”
Aspire Sales Manager, Stacey Wragg, recently awarded
Glenshee Ski Centre an Aspire Certificate of Recognition
for Best Outdoor Experience 2012. She says: “Glenshee Ski
Centre offers so much. Not only is it within reach of the
Aspire region, it also offers exceptional skiing, catering for
all abilities. With the first winter snow falls now underway,
I would like to encourage everyone who wants to have a
go at this thrilling sport, or anyone who has already been
enticed by the snow, to travel to Glenshee this ski season
and see for yourself just why we’ve selected them for this
Certificate of Recognition.”
Prices for a full day’s skiing at Glenshee range from £12 for
a junior beginner to £17 for an adult beginner and from
£18 for an experienced junior to £28 for an experienced
adult. For more information or an up-to-date snow report,
We operate daily whale/wildlife watching cruises to suit all ages, weather
and a traditional motor cruiser called The Kerry.
Orca 1 runs cruises for 1 - 4 hours out into the offshore feeding areas in search of the whales,
dolphins and to the Shiant Islands to see the thousands of puffins that nest there. We recommend
at least a 2hr cruise to have a realistic chance of finding the whales as they only occasionally enter
Gairloch Bay.
The Kerry is a more relaxed cruise taking in more of the Gairloch Bay wildlife, whilst still getting you
out offshore on the longer cruises. A 3 - 4hr cruise is recommended
for whale sightings. She also runs specialist pelagic bird cruises, with
the aid of chum.
Orca 1 is continually the most sucessful whale watching boat in
Scotland, reporting more whale sightings to the National Database
for at least the last 4 years.
Advanced booking is essential in school holiday periods and cruises
experience to be remembered.
The most highly anticipated fishing event is held at
Kenmore every January, when the hotel celebrates the
official opening of the salmon fishing season with a funfilled
ceremony. The event regularly attracts hundreds
of spectators and aims to raise plenty of money for
Kenmore’s chosen charities – last year’s event raised an
impressive £186,000. The 2012 official opening will mark
the 65th anniversary of the event, will be held on 16th
January and will feature the Vale of Atholl Junior Pipe
Band marching to the river for the official opening.
It’s not hard to see why Aspire recently selected
Kenmore Hotel for a Certificate of Recognition for
Fishing Breaks. Aspire Sales Manager, Stacey Wragg,
says: “Kenmore Hotel has everything you need to
experience Scotland at its best and I believe its fishing
opportunities simply can’t be beaten. Not only that, but
if a couple wanted to spend a holiday here and one of
them didn’t like fishing, there’s a wealth of attractions
right on the doorstep for guests to enjoy, whatever the
weather.”
With landscapes once trodden by historical figures
including Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace and
Robert the Bruce, Perthshire’s past is one of its main
attractions and there are castles aplenty to explore and
admire. A visit to the area’s numerous distilleries also
comes highly recommended, as does soaking up the
stunning beauty of the county with a range of outdoor
pursuits, including walking, cycling, rafting and golf.
Nifty Nappies From Fill Your Pants
In recent years, we’ve become more aware of the impact
our lifestyles have on the environment. If you want to
limit your affect on this world, and preserve it for future
generations, there’s now a multitude of ways in which you
can be ‘green’.
This issue, Aspire are appealing to the mums and dads out
there who want to ensure our world is conserved for their
children and grandchildren, and asking them to consider
reusable nappies. Established in 2008, Fill-Your-Pants.com
is an innovative website created by Laura Tanner after the
birth of her daughter, to promote reusable nappies to
families across the UK and Europe.
Laura says: “When my daughter was born, I wanted
to love, care and protect her, to give her the best of
everything and make sure she had a great start in life.
We were living in America at the time and the reusable
community there was so vibrant and fun that, when we
moved back to the UK, I wanted to inspire and encourage
British mums to embrace reusables like the Americans
had. I also wanted something that would allow me to
work from home. We’ve gone from strength-to-strength
and in 2009 my husband, Toran, joined Fill-Your-Pants.
We’ve outgrown our home in Leicestershire and now ship
reusable nappies across Europe.
“Reusable nappies have come a long way in the last five
years; they’re now beautiful in design and very easy to use
and wash – there’s no boiling or folding involved, they’re
just as easy to use as disposable ones, just without the
environmental impact.”
Using trusted and reliable suppliers (including FuzziBunz,
Bambino Mio, Tots Bots and Smartipants), Fill-Your-Pants
stocks a wide range of reusable nappies and accessories,
for babies from birth right through to potty training.
Laura says: “Our most popular nappies are the one-sizefits-all
range as they’ll see the child through to toilet
training, saving the environment and your purse. On
average, parents spend £200 to £300 getting set up with
their reusable nappies, but they’ll save much more than
that whilst their child is in nappies. The average saving is
£500 per child, but this is an old figure, which takes into
account electricity costs, washing machine depletion and
detergent costs, but I think parents could save much more
now. In fact, they’re such good quality that they can be
re-used for subsequent children.”
Leicestershire County Council and Northamptonshire
County Council currently offer cash-back schemes
for reusable nappies, vouchers which can be used to
purchase Fill-Your-Pants goodies. Laura explained:
“The county councils are really pushing their cash-back
schemes as it obviously costs them (and hence us the
taxpayers) a lot of money each year to put all those
disposable nappies into their landfill sites. Each baby
uses, on average, seven to eight nappies a day for up to
three years – that’s a phenomenal amount of disposables
nappies in landfill sites across the region.”
Laura was kind enough to send our editor, Claire,
some Smartipants nappies to try on her 23-month-old
daughter, Nell. Claire says: “Marketed as easy to use
and easy to care for, these Smartipants nappies looked
great and were much easier to use than I had imagined.
Laura sent me a selection of one-size-fits-all nappies and
absorbent inserts, which stayed in place even whilst my
daughter slept. I think I’m at a slight disadvantage as
I’ve been using disposable nappies for almost two years,
however I do think these reusable nappies will come in
very handy when my husband and I are potty training
Nell. I think they’ll help Nell understand the difference
between nappies and pants. I wish I’d come across
reusable nappies earlier though as they’re a great idea
and much easier to use and wash than I thought. They’ve
definitely come on since my mum used them on me!”
Laura added: “Reusable nappies are not only kinder on
the environment and your purse, they’re also kinder for
baby. There are no nasty chemicals for absorption in
reusable nappies because the super absorbent fibres do
the job instead. The baby also has no wetness next to the
skin because soft and ‘stay-dry’ fibres are used, ensuring
instances of nappy rash are rarer amongst babies that
wear reusable nappies than those that wear disposables.
This makes them ideal for those babies with sensitive
skin.”
